VIENTIANE: Authorities in Luang Prabang have unveiled an ambitious five-year development strategy (2026–2030) aimed at transforming the Unesco-listed town into a premier tourist destination that blends modern comforts with cultural integrity and environmental sustainability.
Deputy Governor of northern Luang Prabang province, Bounleua Sinxayvoravong told local media recently that the core of the plan is a sweeping improvement of tourism infrastructure and services designed to meet the expectations of both domestic and international travellers.
From upgraded hotels and guesthouses to enhanced logistics and hospitality standards, the initiative seeks to boost visitor satisfaction, encourage longer stays and drive repeat visits to the internationally acclaimed town.
The Laos-China Railway, which runs through the province, will be leveraged as a key transport route to drive the logistics and tourism industry.
Bounleua stated that the province will promote investment in tourism-related businesses and develop new attractions to expand choices for visitors and enhance their overall experience.
'A key component of the plan is the development of Ngoy township, a popular destination, into a model of eco-tourism that celebrates natural beauty while also promoting environmental conservation.'
'In addition, Luang Prabang International Airport will be upgraded to meet global standards, enabling better access to neighbouring countries such as China and Vietnam, as well as key markets with potential like Japan and the Republic of Korea,' Bounleua said.
The airport is set for a major upgrade under a public-private partnership. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport recently received prequalification documents from eight companies interested in bidding for the upgrade project designed as one of the key boosters to drive toruism in the region.
Another feature of the plan includes establishing a new transport link with Dien Bien province in neighbouring Vietnam, which will help boost cross-border travel and strengthen the tourism network across northern Laos, Bounleua added.
Recognised as a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1995, Luang Prabang is famed for its blend of traditional Lao architecture, French colonial charm, ancient temples and scenic beauty along the Mekong River.
The town has long been the cultural and spiritual heart of Laos, attracting millions of visitors with its tranquil atmosphere and rich heritage.
The province welcomed more than two million domestic and foreign visitors in the first five months of 2025, representing a 129.44 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2024. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN

KDJA journalists explore Mulu Pinnacles for Sarawak Day
MULU: A group of 10 local journalists from various media agencies has embarked on a four-day expedition to Gunung Api in Mulu National Park, organised by the Kuching Division Journalists Association (KDJA). The event, held in conjunction with Sarawak Day on July 22, aims to showcase the state's unique tourism offerings, including the UNESCO-listed Mulu Pinnacles. KDJA president Ronnie Teo stated that the expedition continues the association's annual climbing initiative, which began in 2018 at Mount Kinabalu. He emphasised the Sarawak Premier's support in encouraging media professionals to push their limits beyond their usual roles. 'This year, we chose the Mulu Pinnacles as our challenge, exclusively for KDJA members. We also hope to maintain our collaboration with the Sarawak Government for future editions,' Teo said in a statement. Participants include representatives from The Borneo Post, Bernama, Dayak Daily, Suara Sarawak, CatsFM, See Hua, and TVS. The itinerary includes visits to Deer Cave and Lang Cave, a nine-kilometre trek to Camp 5, and the main ascent to the iconic limestone formations. The Sarawak Government backs the programme as part of Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg's efforts to promote the state's tourism ahead of Sarawak Day.

Crypto Review: Bitcoin Holds Steady Ahead of US$40 Billion Options Expiry
Bitcoin ended the last week of June largely flat, trading in a tight range between US$99,700 and US$108,300 from June 23 to June 27, as traders brace for a massive US$40 billion options expiry. The world's largest cryptocurrency began the week under pressure, briefly dipping below US$99,000 on June 23 amid heightened geopolitical tensions. However, sentiment quickly rebounded following a ceasefire in the Middle East and sustained inflows into US-listed Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), pushing prices back above US$107,000 by June 27. By the end of the week, Bitcoin was trading at approximately US$107,088, down 0.8% from June 26, as profit-taking set in and market participants adopted a wait-and-see approach ahead of the high-stakes expiry event. Other major cryptocurrencies also saw mild declines, with Ethereum, Solana and XRP slightly retreating alongside Bitcoin as the broader market entered consolidation. Despite the near-term caution, analysts remain optimistic. A weakening US dollar, easing geopolitical risks and continued ETF-driven inflows have created a relatively constructive backdrop for digital assets. Moving forward, market watchers expect increased volatility due to the options expiry. A decisive breakout above the US$108,000-US$109,000 resistance zone could mark the beginning of Bitcoin's next leg higher, while failure to hold US$105,000 may trigger a short-term pullback. As the second half of 2025 begins, investor focus remains on macroeconomic signals, ETF flows and regulatory clarity, all of which will shape the trajectory of the ongoing crypto rebound. Related

Lyon owner Textor to take step back from running club after relegation to Ligue 2
PHILADELPHIA: American businessman John Textor has said he is going to take a step back from the day-to-day running of French club Lyon after they were relegated to Ligue 2 due to their financial situation. "Our success on the pitch has not been matched by our success off the pitch," Textor told AFP in relation to Lyon's plight despite them finishing sixth in Ligue 1 in the season just finished to qualify for Europe. Textor runs Lyon in his role as president of Eagle Football, the group which owns several clubs including Brazilian champions Botafogo. But he admitted that his efforts to reduce Lyon's debts and solve their problems have not been enough to convince French football's financial watchdog, known as the DNCG. He therefore now plans to let others take charge of the club's appeal against their relegation, which was announced last Tuesday. "I am going to pull back from this process. We have some people, some partners that are going to take the step forward," he told AFP in Philadelphia following Botafogo's 1-0 defeat to Palmeiras in the Club World Cup on Saturday. "I am an owner. If I had a coach go into a game five times in a row with a bad tactical plan I'd fire him. "As the majority owner of Eagle Football I am clearly not getting it done at the DNCG so we are going to put some different faces in play, and we are going to work very constructively with the DNCG." Textor has just agreed a deal to sell his 43 percent stake in English Premier League club Crystal Palace to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson. The BBC reported that Johnson, a former US ambassador to the United Kingdom, would pay £190 million (US$255 million) for the shares. Textor, who bought Lyon in late 2022, believes that money can be reinjected into the seven-time French champions to help their case. Explaining his decision to step back from Lyon, Textor said he felt his "weird" ideas were being misunderstood. "I am the capitalist that shows up with a bunch of weird creative ideas and I don't understand why they are not understood there, and that is hurting the club," he said. "So I know we are going to put some more capital into the equation, we are going to argue for the case we already made, we are going to do it respectfully." Lyon announced on Friday that they had reached an agreement with European football's governing body UEFA to enable them to play in next season's Europa League, provided an appeal against their relegation succeeds. "There is no solvency or sustainability issue with us – we just cleared the UEFA financial sustainability review," Textor added. "I am very proud of our on-pitch success. We had a relegation squad when I took it took care of the banks, we stabilised the club, we got them back into Europe, and then administratively we get sent down.
