Garrett Hartley's iconic 40-yard FG is the Saints Play of the Day
We're down to 40 days until the New Orleans Saints kick off their 2025 regular season, and Garrett Hartley's 40-yard field goal against the Minnesota Vikings is our Saints Play of the Day.
Now, a 40-yard field goal in itself isn't too exciting. But this kick in particular had the highest stakes of any play in team history. Hartley sent the Saints to Super Bowl XLIV by nailing his field goal in overtime of the NFC championship game. He followed Sean Payton's advice to aim for the team's black and gold fleur-de-lis waving on a banner between the uprights.
It was one of the hardest-fought games in recent memory. The score was tied up four times and the Saints defensed hammered the Vikings offense, taking advantage of two Brett Favre interceptions and a three lost fumbles from Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin, and Bernard Berrian. Minnesota's ball security proved to be their downfall when Favre threw his second interception in the final seconds of regulation; Tracy Porter picked it off, setting the stage for his iconic pick-six off of Peyton Manning in the Super Bowl.
As for Hartley? His season to this point was wild. He'd been suspended for the first four games and was inactive during the next seven contests before getting called in to replace John Carney. He went 9-of-11 on field goals and 10-of-11 on extra points in the team's last five regular season games, but he kicked things into gear in the playoffs. Hartley was perfect on each of his field goals (including three of them in the Super Bowl from distances of 46, 44, and 47 yards) and all 12 of his extra point tries. It's not enough to say the Saints wouldn't have won Super Bowl XLIV without him. Without Hartley, they wouldn't have even gotten there.

35 days until Saints season opener: Every player to wear No. 35
The New Orleans Saints have 35 days until their 2025 regular season opener against the Arizona Cardinals. New coach Kellen Moore will lead the Saints into their 59th NFL season. There have been only 16 players to wear No. 35 for New Orleans in a regular season game, with undrafted rookie defensive back Elliott Davison hoping to extend that list. Here's a look at all the players. Saints' History of No. 35 Ted Davis was the first to wear No. 35 as a Saint, suiting up for 38 games over the franchise's first three seasons. It remains the second longest tenure for any player to wear the No. 35 jersey with New Orleans. Of the 16 players that have worn No. 35 in Saints history, Davis is one of only three to do it for more than two years. Jim Otis was the first New Orleans draft pick to wear No. 35, doing it for 13 games in one year after being selected in Round 9 of the 1970 NFL draft. Bob Gresham was drafted in the eighth round the following year. Gresham played 27 games over two seasons, rushing for 764 yards and scoring 9 touchdowns. He is also the highest drafted player by the Saints to wear a No. 35 jersey. During the 1984 season, the Saints traded for future Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Earl Campbell. Reunited with Bum Phillips, his coach with the Houston Oilers, it was thought that Campbell would team with George Rogers to give the Saints a lethal rushing attack. Unfortunately, Campbell was no longer the elite punishing power back he was with the Oilers after years of physical toll. Campbell played two years and 24 games for the Saints before retiring. He rushed for 833 yards, but only one score and averaged four yards per carry. The Saints wouldn't have a defensive player wear No. 35 until Shane Pahukoa in 1995. Pahukoa only played one year for the team but did have two interceptions. He was one of nine players to wear No. 35 that did so for a year or less. Of the seven defensive players to wear the jersey, before Elliott Davison potentially this year, only two of them wore it for longer than a year. One of them was Ted Davis. The other was Fakhir Brown. A graduate of Mansfield High School in Louisiana and Grambling State University, Brown was with the Saints for four years. His 56 games are the most for any player to wear No. 35 for New Orleans. As a Saint, Brown had 2 interceptions and broke up 30 passes while forcing 3 fumbles and recovering 4 others. Since Brown, five players have worn 35 in the last 20 years. None of them have been with the Saints into a third season.

Saints Play of the Day: Bryan Bresee blocks game-tying field goal
We are now just 35 days away from the New Orleans Saints kicking off the 2025 NFL season, and our Saints Play of the Day is one of the few fun moments from last year, when Bryan Bresee and the special teams unit blocked a 35-yard field goal to beat the New York Giants back in Week 14. Darren Rizzi had already taken over for Dennis Allen, and the season was in the dumps. New Orleans was 4-8 heading into the game and facing a 2-10 Giants squad, pretty much just hoping for some semblance of positivity. The game itself had taken some unfortunate turns as Derek Carr suffered the injury that would end up being his last snap in the NFL, ushering in the new era of Saints quarterback play. New Orleans led by as much as 11 in the third quarter. Kendre Miller and Juwan Johnson scored touchdowns. New York had a rushing score and a two-point conversion to bring the score to 14-11. Graham Gano had an opportunity to tie the game with a field goal in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter, but Bryan Bresee broke through and came up with a clutch block. You can watch the play for yourself here. Rizzi, as he had become known to do, had his typical insane reaction, which may be more fun to watch than the block itself. While much of the coaching staff needed turnover, missing out on Rizzi on special teams will be a big loss.

Davison may have his work cut out for him to make the roster In 35 days, the New Orleans Saints will begin their 59th NFL campaign with their 2025 regular season opener against the Arizona Cardinals. Our Saints Player of the Day, here's a closer look at Davison's career so far. A star at Robert E. Lee High School, Davison was at the University of Incarnate Ward in Texas before transferring to the University of Texas at San Antonio. In two years at UTSA, Davison had 2 interceptions and broke up 5 passes while recording nearly 100 tackles. He led all Roadrunners defensive backs with 58 stops in 2024. The recent retirement of Tyrann Mathieu may open the door to a roster spot at safety with the Saints, but not by much. New Orleans signed veteran Julian Blackmon after Mathieu's retirement to join offseason additions Justin Reid and rookie Jonas Sanker. Elliott Davison will have to outplay returning veterans Jordan Howden and special teams ace J.T. Gray for a chance at a roster spot.
