COIMBATORE: Former
AIADMK
minister S P Velumani said he participated in the centenary celebration of Perur Aatheenam Shanthalinga Ramaswamy Adikalar here on Monday and did not attend the RSS function as he had not been invited to that.
He added that false information was being spread that he participated in the RSS function held in the same venue.
Addressing reporters at the Coimbatore International Airport on Monday evening, Velumani said Perur Aatheenam had brought pride to the Kongu region. 'We went to attend the centenary celebration of Santhalinga Ramasamy Adigalar as we were invited to it. But we were not invited to the RSS event.'
When asked whether a silver Lord Murugan idol and a silver spear (Vel) had been given to the RSS chief to show that the AIADMK and the BJP were one, Velumani said, 'Mohan Bhagwat was invited as a special guest to the Adigalar programme.
Since it was held in my assembly constituency, he was given a Lord Murugan idol and spear as gifts.'
He said, 'The AIADMK would form alliances with many parties for election. But the party would not compromise on its policy of self-respect for that.'
He said Siruvani dam water level had been raised to 50 feet during the AIADMK regime. However, the water level was reduced after a landslide in Kerala and the water level at the dam is not being kept above 40 feet now.
'The water level should be raised to 50 feet immediately, and the frequent water release should be stopped. Otherwise, the AIADMK will stage a protest within 10 days,' said Velumani.

DMK a rising sun, says Stalin in reaction to Shah's remark

CHENNAI: In a veiled attack on BJP and AIADMK , Tamil Nadu chief minister and DMK supremo M K Stalin on Saturday said there was no place in the state for those who divided Tamils on the lines of religion and those who were helping them. Responding to a recent remark by Union home minister Amit Shah that DMK should be eliminated, he said: 'DMK is not a matchstick to be doused. We are the rising Sun. We will stand for our language and our soil.' Ahead of launching DMK's 'Oraniyil Tamil Nadu' campaign, Stalin wrote a letter to his party cadres saying BJP govt at the Centre was denying developmental projects to Tamil Nadu. 'They are boycotting schemes for Tamil Nadu, rejecting Tamil heritage, not allocating funds for Tamil language, and dividing people on the lines of religion. People will reject those who divide them based on religion and those who help do that,' the Tamil Nadu CM said. Stalin will launch the 'Oraniyil Tamil Nadu' campaign from July 1 with the objective to make at least 30% of the voters in the state DMK members. Recently, the party's IT wing launched an app for digital enrolment of members. To make the campaign successful, Stalin held a meeting with district secretaries and other party functionaries virtually on Saturday.

Emergency-Era Changes In Constitution's Preamble A 'Festering Wound': VP Dhankhar

His comments come against the backdrop of a recent call from sections of the RSS and BJP for a review of the terms 'socialist' and 'secular' in the Preamble Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar said on Saturday that the preamble of any constitution is its soul, and it is not changeable. Except for India, he said, no other constitution's preamble has undergone change. He was speaking at an event marking the presentation of a book titled Ambedkar's Messages. The Vice President was referring to the 42nd Constitutional Amendment Act of 1976, enacted during the Emergency declared on June 25, 1975. This amendment controversially added the words 'Socialist", 'Secular", and 'Integrity" to the Preamble, which originally described India as a 'Sovereign Democratic Republic". Dhankhar questioned the legitimacy of these changes, particularly their timing. He highlighted that the amendments were pushed through during the 'darkest period of Indian democracy", when fundamental rights were suspended and countless citizens, including prominent leaders, were imprisoned. He said, 'When We the People were bleeding—in heart, in soul—they were in darkness," making the alteration a 'travesty of justice." Dhankhar's remarks also touched upon the judicial understanding of the Preamble. He recalled the Kesavananda Bharati vs State of Kerala case of 1973, where a 13-judge bench of the Supreme Court had deeply reflected on the Preamble, with Justice HR Khanna famously stating that it serves as a guide to interpreting the Constitution and indicates its authority derives from 'We the People of India". His comments come against the backdrop of a recent call from sections of the RSS and BJP for a review of the terms 'socialist" and 'secular" in the Preamble, arguing they were forcibly added and were not part of BR Ambedkar's original draft. The Vice President argued that changing something considered unalterable, something that emanates from the people, at a time when the people were 'virtually enslaved", was a grave 'sacrilege to the spirit of Sanatana" and a belittling of India's civilisational heritage. He further termed the added words a 'nasoor" (festering wound) that could 'create upheaval", signalling a 'betrayal of the mindset of the framers of the Constitution". Ministers call for review of 'socialist, secular' words in preamble

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Friday said "there is no need for socialism in India", adding "secularism is not the core of our culture". Chouhan's remarks assume significance as RSS Thursday called for reviewing the words 'socialist' and 'secular' in the Preamble of the Constitution, saying they were included during the Emergency and were never part of the Constitution drafted by B R Ambedkar. Addressing an event organised at Delhi on 50 years of Emergency, RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale said, "The Preamble of the Constitution Baba Saheb Ambedkar made never had these words. During the Emergency, when fundamental rights were suspended, Parliament did not work, the judiciary became lame, then these words were added." Speaking at a programme held in Varanasi to mark 50 years of Emergency, Chouhan said, "'Bharat mein samajwad kee zaroorat nahi hai... Dharmanirapeksh hamaaree sanskrti ka mool nahin hai aur issliye is par zaroor vichaar hona chaahiye' (There is no need for socialism in India... 'Secular' is not the core of our culture and hence, this must be deliberated upon)," he said. In indirect support to RSS' call to review the words "socialist" and "secular" in the Preamble of the Constitution, Union minister Jitendra Singh on Friday also said any right-thinking citizen will endorse it because everybody knows that these words were not part of the original Constitution written by Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed Saturday that 'socialism' and 'secularism' are "western concepts", and these words should be struck off Constitution. "How can I be secular? I am a hardcore Hindu. A Muslim person is a hardcore Muslim person. How can he be secular?" Sarma said. Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar Saturday said the words inserted in Preamble through an amendment during Emergency era were a 'nasoor' (festering wound).
