Quakes extend LA Galaxy's MLS record season-opening winless streak to 16 games with 1-0 victory
CARSON, Calif. (AP) — Substitute Ousseni Bouda scored in the 74th minute, and the San Jose Earthquakes extended the LA Galaxy's MLS record season-opening winless streak to 16 games with a 1-0 victory Wednesday night.
Bouda slipped between two defenders and got his third goal of the season on a precise pass from fellow substitute Preston Judd for the Quakes, who snapped a four-game losing streak in the California Clasico rivalry.
The defending MLS Cup champion Galaxy (0-12-4) are edging toward historic ignominy after dropping yet another match at the stadium where they went unbeaten in 2024 and won their league-record sixth title in December.
The MLS record is 19 straight winless matches in league play by the MetroStars in 1999. Real Salt Lake also played 18 straight without a win from 2005-06.
Earl Edwards Jr. made six saves to keep his third clean sheet of the season for San Jose, which is unbeaten in eight matches across all competitions in May. Quakes head coach Bruce Arena had a successful return to the stadium where he led the Galaxy for nine seasons and won three MLS Cup championships.
The Galaxy nearly salvaged a draw in the final minute of second-half injury time, but Edwards saved captain Maya Yoshida's header deep in the San Jose box. Supporters chanted 'We want better!' after the final whistle.
The Galaxy's woes have only compounded throughout the new season despite the return to health of stars Joseph Paintsil, Gabriel Pec and Marco Reus. All three international veterans played major roles on last year's championship team, but were limited by injury in the new year.
Reus left in the 59th minute against San Jose after sitting down on the grass without contact and eventually walking off the field. Reus struggled with a knee injury earlier in the season, but had been playing well in recent matches.
Disorganized in attack and lacking any crispness in their passing, the Galaxy still look lost without Catalan midfielder Riqui Puig, who orchestrated their excellence throughout the 2024 season before tearing a knee ligament in the conference final. Puig could return this summer, but LA also had to part with a handful of key contributors to last season's team due to the salary cap constraints created annually for the MLS champion by title bonuses in their players' contracts.
The Galaxy's leadership has declined to panic during this mammoth skid, even extending the contract of head coach Greg Vanney two weeks ago when the winless streak was at a mere 13 games.
LA's Novak Micovic had to make two diving saves in the first two minutes of play, and he finished with four saves in the scoreless first half. San Jose's Ian Harkes hit the crossbar from long range in the 22nd minute.
The Galaxy host Salt Lake on Saturday night. If they don't beat Salt Lake or win at St. Louis on June 14, they could tie the MetroStars' record June 25 at Colorado.

Inter Miami provides Lionel Messi injury update: How long will he be sidelined?
Lionel Messi is expected to miss some playing time with Inter Miami, but it's unclear how long he could be sidelined due to his upper, right-leg injury. Messi has "a minor muscle injury," Inter Miami announced on Aug. 3 in a statement. The announcement did not include a timetable for his return. Inter Miami's next match is in the 2025 Leagues Cup tournament – Aug. 6 against Pumas UNAM at Chase Stadium – with a prime opportunity to advance to the knockout stage. It's likely Inter Miami will play their next match without their eight-time Ballon d'Or winner and Argentine World Cup champion. Here's everything you need to know about Lionel Messi's latest injury, including Inter Miami's upcoming schedule and two matches Messi could play with Argentina in early September: Will Messi play in Inter Miami's next Leagues Cup match? Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano will have a press conference on Tuesday, Aug. 5, a day before their next match, where Messi's status for the Aug. 6 match could be announced. What injury does Lionel Messi have? Messi has an upper, right-leg injury – which Inter Miami described as a "minor muscle injury." When did Messi get injured? Messi was injured in the opening minutes of Inter Miami's Aug. 2 Leagues Cup match against Necaxa. Messi attempted to charge forward into the penalty area with possession, but was tripped up and fell to the pitch. Messi made the move in the 6th minute of the match, and was removed as a substitute in the 11th minute. He walked off on his own into Inter Miami's locker room after a trainer massaged his upper, right leg upon evaluation. How much time will Messi miss due to injury? It's unclear how long Messi will be out or how many matches he would miss due to this injury. Inter Miami has prime opportunity to advance in Leagues Cup Inter Miami is in third place – behind Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers – in the MLS side of the Leagues Cup table after the first two matches. Only the Top 4 clubs from MLS and LIGA MX will advance to the knockout stage. Simply put, Inter Miami would advance if they beat Pumas by any score. With five points in the standings, Inter Miami is ahead of six other MLS clubs with four points. A win to reach eight points would be enough to advance. Could Messi return if Inter Miami advances in Leagues Cup? The best-case scenario for Inter Miami is they advance to the knockout stage, and Messi returns to play in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals on either Aug. 19 or 20. But it's still too early to guess if Messi would recover in time. What is Inter Miami's upcoming schedule? After Inter Miami plays against Pumas, they will have two MLS regular-season matches before the Leagues Cup quarterfinals – if they qualify. Here's Inter Miami's upcoming schedule through August: Will Messi play with Argentina in September World Cup qualifiers? Argentina has already qualified for the 2026 World Cup, but still has two more qualifying matches to play: Sept. 4 vs. Venezuela and Sept. 9 vs. Ecuador. The Sept. 4 match is one to keep an eye on: It will be played in Argentina, and could possibly be Messi's last match in his home country.

Matt Turner is feeling back at home with New England Revolution
Matt Turner is enjoying a happy homecoming with the New England Revolution, returning to the club that gave him his first shot in professional soccer. He's hoping to reestablish himself as one of the premier keepers in the sport, and help New England return to form in the process. Turner's star rose to unprecedented levels with the Revolution. He went from going undrafted in 2016 to a star of Major League Soccer in a matter of a few years, earning MLS Goalkeeper of the Year honors in 2021. It was that season when Turner's play in goal helped New England win its first Supporters' Shield. Years of turning away shots and logging clean sheets in Foxboro earned Turner a transfer to European powerhouse Arsenal, but his time across the pond did not go as planned. He was buried in Arsenal and moved to Nottingham Forest, whom he played 17 matches for in 2023-24. He was then loaned to Crystal Palace, and was set to join France club Lyons on loan this summer before the organization fell into financial trouble. Turner said it was tough to be buried on the depth chart and then sit in limbo this summer. But his bumpy road overseas ultimately paved his way back to Foxboro. "For me, it was always New England," Turner said Monday as he was re-introduced by the Revolution. "It was always my home, always coming back here when the opportunity presented itself. It's a good situation and the right time for us." Turner said he has no regrets from his time overseas. He learned a lot with Arsenal and the other clubs he was with, and has seen his family grow with the birth of his two young children. "I had some misfortunes and there were opportunities I didn't make the most of," said Turner. "Still, I started my family while I was over there. I have zero regrets." Turner said his New England return came together pretty quickly, because the New England front office had been keeping a close eye on him and had been in touch with his agent since his departure in 2022. He remained close with a number of his former Revs teammates too, many of whom text Turner with the eyeballs emoji when rumors started to surface about a potential return last week. "When I left, I never stopped being a Revolution supporter myself. This club has meant so much to me and my family," Turner said Monday. "All the ups and downs over the years – winning a Supporters' Shield, the first major trophy in club history -– all those memories are a lifetime worth of memories." Turner and his family were back in Gillette Stadium earlier this year to attend a match and received a huge ovation from New England supporters. He was blown away by the reception. "The way I felt the love from them, it was special. It was a while since I really felt those arms around me and it was eye-opening. It's good to be back in an environment where you're loved," he said. But this reunion is much more than just a feel-good story. For Turner, he's looking to secure consistent playing time and reassert himself as a top keeper. His best avenue toward reclaiming the starting goalkeeper job for the U.S. Men's National Team is by logging a lot of saves and clean sheets for New England. He wants to be the starting keeper for the 2026 World Cup, and dominating for the Revolution is his best chance to lock up the role. "I don't want to sour any milk," Turner said of his previous success with the club. "I want to work and continue on the journey I'm on here. I'm not here just to parade around and be Matt Turner. I know and understand this club is going through some difficult moments this season, and I want to bring that winning mentality back and create relationships that will last a lifetime with he supporters and the guys in that locker room." The Revolution sit at just 6-11-7 on the season and have watched their playoff hopes fade over the last month. The club has struggled to score during a nine-match winless streak, and Turner won't be able to help much in that department. But the leadership he can bring to the locker room and on the pitch could prove to be invaluable for New England. "His leadership is key," New England Revolution sporting director Curt Onalfo said Monday. "He'll be an important part of our locker room and in games, when you have those unfortunate moments when momentum is shifting, you need those leaders to push the momentum back. We know his leadership will be invaluable in the locker room." "I know the club is going through a tough stretch this season and I want to bring back that winning mentality," said Turner. Turner is expected to be available for Saturday's match against D.C. United at Gillette Stadium. He's on loan to New England through next season, but said he'd be open to a more permanent pact that would keep the 31-year-old with the club longterm. "The door is open for anything. If it goes well here, I go with the national team and get consistently called in," he said. "I would never shut the door on a long term stay, but I don't want to shut the door on anywhere."
