Why new political parties dey appear ahead of election year
Na two years remain for di 2027 general elections to happun but political association and politicians don begin prepare. One of di ways wey dem dey prepare na by forming associations wey fit later become political parties. On Wednesday June 26, di Independent National Electoral Commission confam say ova 100 associations don show interest to register as political parties ahead of 2027. "As of Monday, 23rd June 2025, di Commission don receive letters of intent from 110 associations wey wish to register as political parties. We dey take our time to process di requests in line wit di procedure outlined in law as well as our regulations and guidelines. We don acknowledge all requests wey we receive. "So far, we don acknowledge all applications we don receive, except for six, wey dem submit recently. We go acknowledge dem bifor di end of di week," Oga Mahmood Yakubu tok. Di commission also drop di full list of political parties wey apply for Inec registration ahead of 2027. Political parties na one of di pillars of democracy for any goment, and witout am elections no go fit happun to sustain democracy. Since Nigeria comot from military regime enta democratic rule fully for 1999 till now, di kontri don witness different political parties inside di multi-party system wey dem dey run. Why political parties full evriwia According to Inec, na 19 political parties bin officially dey dia register to contest for positions for di 2023 general elections. But wit di trend wey dey follow registration of political parties evri election year, e no go surprise pipo if by 2027 di political parties for Nigeria double. But why pipo wan register new parties evri time even wen dem no get any chance to survive di political terrain of Nigeria. Political analyst, Sani Bala tell BBC Pidgin why political parties dey full evriwia. Im tok say dis trend dey since and no be today e start - some of di reasons wey im give include na: Financial benefit: According to Mr Bala, bifor now, federal goment bin dey give political parties money during election time, especially di small-small ones wey no too strong. Di money na to encourage and support dem for dia expenses. "To run political party, you need some requirements, one of dem be say di political party gatz get office for Abuja, di Nigeria capital, and to get a place for office you need money. Di party need money for elections, campaigns, travels, even to print forms, so to support dem wit dis expenses na why goment bin dey give dem money. But some political parties just dey wait for dis money to come, afta election di parties go vanish, di good tin be say goment stop to dey give dem money since, na why di number no dey plenti like bifor again." Oga Bala add say dis political parties dey also make money from selling of expression of interest forms to candidates wey wan contest for different positions for election. Underground work for big parties: Di political analyst say most of dis small-small parties dey do underground work for di big parties. "E go surprise you to know say na some of dis big parties dey register di small political parties wey go do underground work for dem during elections". Dis small-small parties get agents for elections wey dey work for di big parties to secure votes." Political ideologies and negotiations: Mr Bala tell BBC Pidgin say anoda reason wey political parties dey full evriwia na sake of political ideologies and negotiations. Im explain say wen di big political parties fail to meet di ideologies of some big members dem go comot to create di one wey go fit dia political ideologies. Im also tok about di negotiation wey dey go on wit di small political parties about who go get ticket for which position. "Sometimes di pipo for di big political parties know say dem no go get ticket for di position wey dem wan run for, so dem gatz do bargain or merger wit dis small parties for future benefit". Political parties for Nigeria From di Third Republic, wey former military Head of State Ibrahim Babangida bin establish, na two political parties bin dey officially recognised. Dem be di National Republican Convention (NRC) and di Social Democratic Party (SDP). Sabi pipo tok say dis two-party system bin dey good well-well for Nigeria history and na during di transition time di parties bin come. Di fourth republic start from 1999. Between 1999 and 2015 Nigeria don get plenti political parties like di Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), di All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), di Alliance for Democracy (AD). Since PDP come from 1999, dem still be one of di big political parties for Nigeria. Oda parties wey bin dey dat time na di United Nigeria Peoples Party (UNPP), di All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), di National Democratic Party (NDP), di All Peoples Party (APP), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and many more wey pipo no fit remember again. For more dan 25 years of democracy, di Peoples Democratic Party na one of di political parties wey don stand gidigba even as dem dey for opposition. Di ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) na coalition of oda parties wey join togeda for 2015.

Fact Check: Kenya has not demanded Nigeria return separatist leader
Kenya's foreign ministry has dismissed reports circulating widely on social media that it has filed a lawsuit against the Nigerian government demanding the "return" of Biafran separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu. Kanu, a British citizen and separatist leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) movement in Nigeria, was arrested there in 2015, but went missing while on bail in 2017. He was detained in Kenya in 2021 and appeared back in court in Nigeria later that year, charged with seven counts of terrorism - charges he denies in his ongoing trial. His lawyer has accused Kenyan special forces of abducting Kanu, which Kenya has denied. In May, posts published, opens new tab on Facebook alongside two images – one of Kenyan President William Ruto and the other of Kanu – said: "Breaking News: Kenya Threatens Nigeria with ICC Action Over Abduction of Nnamdi Kanu". The posts said the Kenyan government had filed a lawsuit against the Nigerian government "demanding the immediate return of Nnamdi Kanu to Kenya". The posts also cited an unnamed Kenyan government spokesperson as saying Nigerian agents had infiltrated Kenya to "abduct" Kanu, in what they described as "an act of aggression that could be interpreted as a declaration of war". Korir Sing'oei, the principal secretary of Kenya's Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, told Reuters that Kenya had not filed any proceedings in any court on the issue. "No such statement has been issued by Kenya," he said in a message. "The matter is outside the remit of the ICC in any event." Kanu's lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, told Reuters he was "not aware of any such legal proceedings filed by Kenya". The ICC prosecutes individuals allegedly responsible for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. A spokesperson for the ICC told Reuters in an email that it "only deals with questions of individual responsibility and not States". No Nigerian national is listed as a defendant in any of the ICC's 33 cases published on its website, opens new tab. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the only international court with the remit to settle disputes between the UN's 193 Member States, which includes both Kenya and Nigeria. A representative for the ICJ told Reuters in an email that there is currently no case on the court's docket instituted by Kenya against Nigeria A spokesperson for Nigeria's foreign ministry did not respond to Reuters' request for comment. False. The Principal Secretary of Kenya's Foreign Ministry said the government has not filed any proceedings demanding Kanu be transferred to the country. An ICC spokesperson said it only deals with individuals, not states. This article was produced by the Reuters Fact Check team. Read more about our fact-checking work.

‘No more acrimony, peace don come' - Wike tok afta e meet wit Tinubu and Fubara
'No more acrimony. Peace don finally come to di state.' Na wetin FCT Minister Nyesom Wike tok at di end of a peace meeting between im and Rivers State Govnor Siminialayi Fubara wit President Bola Tinubu for Aso Rock. Photos of smiles and handshake between Govnor Fubara, di State Assembly members with Minister of FCT Nyesom Wike and President Tinubu don raise hopes of a possible end to di emergency rule for di state. Govnor Fubara alongside Wike and Martins Amaewhule, speaker of di Rivers State House of Assembly and oda Assembly members meet with President Tinubu to broker a peace deal wey dey expected to return democratic governance to di state. Dis meeting dey expected to be a crucial part of di peace building process since President Tinubu declare a state of emergency wey suspend elected state executives and di House of Assembly on 18 March 2025, over three months ago. Afta di meeting, di FCT minister and Govnor Fubara say peace don return as dem don finally reconcile. Wike say dem don agree to work togeda wit di govnor and di govnor too don agree to work with dem. E say dem be members of di same political family wey dey disagree sometimes but now, dem don settle and dem come togeda to inform Mr. president. Photos from di meeting suggest a breakthrough in efforts to resolve di political crisis for di state as one photo show di president with Govnor Fubara and FCT minister all dey smile and shake hands. Oda photos show di FCT Minister and di govnor dey waka side by side with di Speaker Amaewhule and oda state lawmakers dey follow dem. Govnor Fubara say e happy say dis day of reconciliation don come to be as e dey necessary and important for di peace and progress of Rivers State. 'With di help of di president and di agreement of di leaders of di state, peace don return to Rivers State. We go do evritin within our power to make sure say we sustain am dis time around.' Govnor Fubara tok. How we reach here? All dis crises arise from disagreement between Govnor Fubara and di FCT Minister Wike with many reactions wey include: Many pipo don criticise di emergency rule wey see di appointment of a Sole administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas Rtd, from Cross River State to oversee affairs for di state. E lead to many court cases wey dey challenge am for Federal High Courts both for Port Harcourt and Abuja as dem insist say a tsate of emergency no require di president to suspend di elected govnor and Assembly members and impose a non-indigene on di state to oversee affairs. Even di appointment of sole administrators for di 23 LGAs for di State na anoda issue wey many criticize as dem say e no dey known to law and e only favour one party for di crises. Odas also criticise di dissolution of boards and agencies for di state and even di one wey National Assembly don approve, over N1trillion 2025 state budget as well as clearing some officials for some boards. Di approval of anoda Cross River State indigene, Michael Ekpai, to head di Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission RSIEC wey dey expected to conduct local goment elections also spark criticism. But di main questions na weda dis reconciliation moves go bring an end to di emergency rule soon? Wetin go happen to di court cases wey challenge di emergency rule wey di Federal High Courts never begin proper hearing for most of dem? Wetin go happen to di recent appointments wey di Nigerian Senate approve, dem go still hold or dem go dey suspended? All dis na wetin pipo dey wait to see how e go all play out.
