Reform recruits former senior detective as police and crime adviser

Yahoo2 days ago
A top ex-detective who spearheaded a series of high profile murder investigations will join Reform UK as its adviser on police and crime.
Colin Sutton, who led the investigation into serial killer Levi Bellfield, is to help Nigel Farage's party develop its pledge to halve crime in five years.
Mr Farage has said he will spend £7 billion on policies towards this goal, including by recruiting 30,000 extra police officers.
The Reform leader told the Mail on Sunday newspaper that ex-police officer Mr Sutton would be a 'huge asset' to his party.
Mr Sutton told the paper he would give all frontline officers tasers, reopen 300 closed police stations, and stop investigations into online arguments as part of Reform's policing offer.
The two men will appear together at a press conference on Monday morning.

Man in court charged with threatening to kill Nigel Farage in TikTok post

An Afghan migrant charged with threatening to kill Nigel Farage in a TikTok post has appeared in court. Fayaz Khan, 26, allegedly made the threats against the Reform UK leader and other users of the social media platform between October 12 and 15 last year. He posted the alleged threat during his journey from Afghanistan to the UK, Westminster Magistrates' Court previously heard. Khan is also charged with sending a grossly offensive TikTok video between the same dates. Prosecutor Maham Malik told the court the defendant had previously pleaded not guilty to one count of making threats to kill at Southwark Crown Court on July 24. A provisional trial for the charge has been fixed at Southwark Crown Court for October 7. Khan, who appeared in the dock wearing a grey tracksuit, spoke only to confirm his identity without an interpreter and plead not guilty to the second new charge of sending a grossly offensive TikTok video between October 12 and 15, 2024 during a brief hearing on Wednesday. The defendant, of no fixed address, was remanded in custody to next appear at Southwark Crown Court for a further hearing on August 27.

Smillie received an offer of £125,000 from Peter Jones which he accepted before opting to hold out for a better deal elsewhere. He also sold both his houses and his Banksy art collection to focus on Beezer. Smillie, of Stirling, pleaded guilty to a charge of assault and robbery at Glasgow Sheriff Court on July 16 and is due to be sentenced next month. It's not the first time the former contestant has found himself in the dock. Earlier this year he was sentenced to carry out unpaid work after launching a "sinister" attack on his former partner's car. He turned up to the home of his former girlfriend in Stirling in December 2024 wearing a balaclava before smashing the window of her vehicle with a hammer. Smillie earlier admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner. Join Edinburgh Live's Whatsapp Community here and get the latest news sent straight to your messages
