Global mobility crisis
Henley & Partners has released its annual Henley Passport Index, placing Pakistan at 96th out of 99 positions — fourth from the bottom for the fourth consecutive year. The ranking is based on the number of visa-free and visa on arrival (VOA) countries that passport holders have access to, along with their ability to obtain an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) which is a digital travel permit used as a pre-screening method for visa-exempt foreign nationals. While the strongest passport in the world, Singapore's, grants visa-free access to 193 countries, the Pakistani passport offers merely 32 visa-free locations.
A 'weak' passport hinders citizens in many ways beyond increasing travel and visa costs. It creates barriers for entrepreneurs looking to expand their businesses internationally, forcing them to face long waiting times and visa rejections. Moreover, in the past, several domestic e-sports and gaming teams have even been disqualified from international tournaments due to visa-rejections and delayed embassy responses.
In an increasingly global world, the degree of mobility that people in a country have largely determines their ability to advance and connect with the global economy. Without those connections, there is limited exposure, limited opportunity and limited competition on an international scale.
Consistently ranking amongst the bottom five contenders for four years now should force the Pakistani government to divert its attention away from empty diplomatic posturing and instead direct it towards structural reforms that strengthen people's global integration. Especially when its bottom-ranking neighbours include Somalia, Yemen, Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan — some of the most war-torn countries devastated by active conflict and occupation.
While strengthening a passport's ranking is no easy feat, it should at least be an objective that the Pakistani government actively pursues to ease its citizens' lives and improve its own standing on the global stage.

CM urges kids participation in I-Day celebrations
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced that the Independence Day celebrations this year will be organised with special participation of youth and children. The importance of the struggle for truth, traditional dress and national pride will be highlighted on the occasion, she said. "Messages from children, celebrities, national heroes, sportsmen and eminent personalities from various fields should be played on Independence Day," she highlighted, She said the struggle for truth had increased the importance of freedom and its celebration. The chief minister underscored,"This year, Independence Day is being celebrated with a spirit of Pakistan's victory in the 'Battle of Truth, Operation 'Bunyan-um-Marsoos.'" She said,"Independence Day celebrations have been titled 'From the acquisition of independence to the protection of independence". She directed the authorities concerned to organise Independence Day celebrations across Punjab. Special Independence Day activities have begun in every district and activities from August 1 to 14 have been finalised. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said,"The main Independence Day ceremony will be held at Huzuri Bagh on August 14, where I will hoist national flag." She added, "I will unveil a Battle of Truth Park, Museum and Memorial of Battle at Expo Centre Lahore on August 14." She underscored, "Public celebrations will be held with full participation of all sections of society,. Houses, shops and markets will be decorated with national flags and banners." The chief minister said,"A campaign to hoist Pakistani flag on houses has been launched across Punjab." She added,"Government and private buildings across Punjab have started lighting up for Independence Day."

Promoting tourism, investment: PM orders separate airport immigration counters for foreigners
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday ordered the establishment of separate immigration counters for foreign travellers at all of Pakistan's international airports – a move aimed at easing congestion and enhancing the country's global image. The directive came as part of a broader push to attract tourists, investors, and international business delegations. According to an official statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office, Sharif instructed authorities to act promptly, stating: 'All international airports must establish separate immigration counters for foreign nationals in order to promote tourism, facilitate trade, and encourage foreign investment.' The Prime Minister emphasised that the measure would not only streamline processing for foreign travellers but also benefit returning Pakistani citizens by easing overall immigration flow. 'This step reflects our commitment to making Pakistan a welcoming, efficient, and business-friendly destination,' the statement read. The initial phase of implementation is expected to begin immediately at Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi airports, with plans to expand nationwide, said officials.
