Lidl teams up with Alan Cumming in search for new Scottish self-service voice

Lidl has brought a Hollywood touch to its competition that aims "to champion the quirks of the Scottish accent."
Lidl has been on the hunt for a Scottish voice for its new self-service checkouts. To help find the winner, the supermarket has teamed up with Hollywood royalty Alan Cumming.
The budget German grocer recently unveiled a nationwide search that encouraged Scots to submit a recording of themselves reciting popular phrases from the bagging area in a competition that aims to "champion the quirks of the Scottish accent."

The search, which saw 5,000 hopeful Scots enter, has now been narrowed down to 10 entrants, with voices from the likes of Aberdeen, Cupar, Kinross and Oban.

Ahead of of the public vote that is now open, the supermarket giant has teamed up with the host of The Traitors US and his trusty pet companion Lala in a tongue-in-cheek video that offers hilarious critique on the finalist's.
Taking place in a Traitors-esque style castle based in the Scottish Highlands, the Perthshire -born actor, who has also starred in the likes of X-Men and The Good Wife, brings his noted charm when listening to all the voices that are up for the coveted title.
And now the people of Scotland can have their own say on who to crown as the winner, as they can choose the best voice by casting their vote on the Lidl website here before voting ends at 5pm on July 29.
Speaking about the Lidl hopefuls, Alan said: "It's high time our self-checkouts had a bit more character and Scottish flair - and let's be honest, who doesn't want to be told that they've got an unexpected item in the bagging area by someone who sounds like their favourite cousin from Fife or sassy auntie from Glasgow?
"I had an utterly delightful time listening to the 10 auditionees give it laldy; some were bold, some were bizarre, others would have me scanning in an instant! It's a proper rollercoaster of accents, intonations and glorious Scottishness.

"But now the power is in your hands. This isn't just about picking a winner - it's a celebration of who we are, how we speak and our ability to have a bit of a laugh while we do it. So don't dilly dally and get voting!'
Marco Ivone, Regional Director of Lidl GB in Scotland added: "We're incredibly proud to be investing almost £3 million to bring self-checkouts to every Lidl store in Scotland by the end of the year.

The nationwide search came after YouGov research found that 81 percent of Scottish shoppers prefer the choice between a staffed till and a self-service checkout.
In response, Lidl began adding self-service checkouts to all its stores across Scotland in a staggering £3million investment that also rolled the convenient tills out across England and Wales.
Scottish shoppers can officially choose the next voice of Scotland's self-service checkouts by casting their vote on the Lidl website. Voting ends at 5pm on Tuesday, July 29.

With all-out war looming, an under qualified junior staffer in the British government must somehow get a response from his superiors. There is just one thing standing in his way: Microsoft Teams. George Grant Talking about his first show, Grant explained, 'I started writing Operation Blank late one night during a low point at work. It was an honest, slightly jaded, reflection on how I felt my own life was turning out. After starting writing, it continued to grow, and it gave me the confidence to quit my job and pursue my dreams as a writer and performer. The show will be like nothing people have seen before, as although I am alone on stage, the audience will meet a number of characters from a very surreal Microsoft Teams call. 'For those who spend a lot of time at work on virtual calls, I hope they can really relate to some of the frustrations addressed in this show. I truly believe Operation Blank is just the start for me, and I can't wait to share it with everyone.' The show is taking place at Fleming Theatre at theSpace @ Surgeons' Hall this Edinburgh Fringe. Operation Blank will be performed from August 1 – 9, 6:15pm. The 45-minute show is a culmination of Grant's own journey, representing his first writing credit since transitioning to the performing arts from his former career. Fans have hailed Lewis Capaldi and Greggs' collab as "the most iconic British combo since tea met biscuits". Lewis Capaldi has made a triumphant comeback to the music scene with number one single 'Survive,' a performance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and a sold-out tour - but he is giving back in a very special way. ‌ Last week, the Scots singer's eagerly awaited UK and Ireland arena tour sold out within minutes of extra dates being added. Due to the overwhelming demand, which fans snapped up in record time, he promptly added seven additional dates, but said that would be everyone's lot, as he is conscious of "pushing himself too far too soon". ‌ However, those who missed out on the star's comeback gigs might still be in luck. On Tuesday night, the 'Grace' chanter announced on Instagram that fans can bag a free pair of premium tickets to his sold-out UK tour. ‌ And how do fans go about it, you might ask? Well, music lovers are being asked to dress up as the hitmaker himself and get themselves down to one of five selected Greggs shops across the country to be in with a shout. But be warned - there are just 25 pairs up for grabs and it is first come, first served. Taking to the social media platform, Greggs official page explained: "Get yourself down to one of five selected Greggs shops in your BEST Capaldi cosplay to be in with a chance to nab the exclusive tickets. "With just 25 pairs available at each shop, only those who truly capture Lewis' iconic sense of fashion will be eligible to join the queue and have a chance to win..." Aptly, the competition kicks off in Lewis' hometown of Glasgow on Tuesday, July 22, from 6pm, when Greggs at 393 Sauchiehall Street will no doubt be inundated with Lewis lookalikes who hope to rock out to his tunes in person. ‌ The 28-year-old is set to play four dates in Scotland this coming September, with two nights at Aberdeen's P&J Live on September 10 and 11, and two nights at Glasgow's OVO Hydro on September 13 and 14. Salford's Gregg branch will host the lookalike contest on the same day as Glasgow, while Leicester Square in London and Bullring Shopping Centre in Birmingham will be next up on Wednesday, July 23 from 6pm. ‌ Fans' last chance will be at Meadowhall Retail Park Drive Thru in Sheffield on Thursday, July 24 from 6pm. Scots could be sporting anything from Lewis' classic black trousers and white tee combo, to his American flag ensemble from when the talent's hit single 'Someone You Loved' went to number one in the US in 2019. Afterwards the funny man and musician jokingly labelled himself"America's sweetheart". ‌ Followers of Lewis' career already can't get enough of his decision to team up with the much-loved food spot, known for their sausage rolls and Yum Yums. One fan wrote: "Capaldi cosplay AND Greggs? This is the most iconic British combo since tea met biscuits". Another wrote: "Sauchiehall St Greggs isn't ready for what I have planned". A third enthused: "This is so iconic, I love it!"
