Houston Texans add veteran CB Arthur Maulet to one-year deal ahead of training camp

USA Today3 days ago
The Houston Texans wanted to find a veteran defensive back ahead of training camp after Ronald Darby elected to retire in OTAs.
Consider that mission accomplished entering Wednesday's start of drills.
According to Cameron Wolfe of NFL Media, the Texans and veteran cornerback Arthur Maulet have agreed to terms on a one-year deal. He's expected to compete for depth reps behind All-Pro Derek Stingley Jr. and standout sophomore Kamari Lassiter.
Maulet, 32, spent the last two seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, where he never started but added value on special teams. While he appeared in 14 games for the Ravens in 2023, injuries limited him to just three appearances in 2024 ahead of his release in March.
The Texans didn't face off against Maulet in the Christmas Day game after he suffered an injury earlier in the season. A former undrafted free agent from Memphis in 2017, Maulet has appeared in 85 games with 23 starts for the Saints, Colts, Jets, Steelers, and Ravens. He primarily has seen action in the slot while finding success as a blitzer.
The Texans return to practice on Wednesday.

Nathaniel Hackett returns to Packers as defensive analyst

Who says you can't go home? Former Broncos head coach and Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett is now back on staff with the Packers, head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed in his Thursday press conference. Hackett will serve as a defensive analyst for the club, helping give coordinator Jeff Hafley a fresh perspective. It's a similar role to what Robert Saleh played for the offense when he joined the staff last year after being fired as Jets head coach. Luke Getsy also served as a defensive analyst last year after he'd been fired from his role as Raiders offensive coordinator. Getsy is now still on staff as a senior assistant. 'He's a guy I really respect and we've had a lot of great times together,' LaFleur said Thursday, via Zach Kruse of USA Today. 'It's a fresh perspective. It gives you a little different lens to see it through, talk it through,' LaFleur added. 'He's sitting in with our defensive staff. He's been in our linebacker room going through the film, giving them a good offensive perspective.' Hackett was the Packers' offensive coordinator under LaFleur from 2019-2021. He was then hired as Broncos head coach in 2022 and was fired after a 51-14 loss to the Rams on Christmas Day with two games remaining in the season. He then served as Jets offensive coordinator in 2023, reuniting with Aaron Rodgers. He lost play-calling duties after Saleh was fired as Jets head coach midway through the 2024 season.

The countdown to Mark Andrews and the Ravens' Week 1 redemption begins

Baltimore star tight end Mark Andrews is excited for the season opener against the Buffalo Bills It didn't take us long to recognize that Mark Andrews was an exceptional talent for the Baltimore Ravens. Drafted in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft, he earned a First-Team All-Pro selection in 2021. If it weren't for the standout player from the Kansas City Chiefs, he would likely have received even more accolades. He has been added to three Pro Bowl rosters (2019, 2021, 2022), which, in and of itself, is a reason to feel proud and accomplished. Baltimore added Isaiah Likely and Charlie Kolar in 2022. Together, they have formed the pretty three-headed monster. But, still, we all know why we're here. The NFL has always had its 'what have you done for me lately?' persona. NFL fans in Baltimore are just like fans who live everywhere else. It's the last image that haunts us most often. The last time we saw Andrews and company on the field together was the Divisional Round of the AFC Playoffs. The Buffalo Bills were the opponent. Number 89 was involved in two major offensive miscues that still haunt loyal fans today. A fumble during a Ravens offensive drive halfway through the fourth quarter halted some momentum and the chance at a go-ahead score. Later, his number was called again. Baltimore needed two points to tie the game and potentially force overtime. Lamar Jackson sought Andrews in the front corner of the end zone. The pass was dropped, which essentially meant the game was over. Fast forward to the present, and the Ravens have begun their 2025 training camp. Week 1 of the regular season comes on September 7. They again visit Buffalo to face the Bills. This time on Sunday Night Football. Andrews and Company seek redemption. Trust and believe this is a fact that hasn't slipped past them. "It's going to be a great story," Andrews said via the Ravens' official website "I'm excited about that game." Excited indeed. This game features two contenders. It's a game billed as a rematch. This has all the makings of a classic. Expect Andrews' best effort. Expect a polished Ravens effort. Who needs a prediction? We're glad you asked. Expect a Ravens win.

Ravens' QB Lamar Jackson is focused on daily improvements amid huge expectations for 2025

Lamar Jackson said "I'm only 28. I'm really just getting started" when asked about huges expectations for Ravens in 2025 Lamar Jackson has won an MVP award in two of his first seven seasons and enters the 2025 slate looking to make a deep playoff run. Baltimore is a Super Bowl favorite and faces huge expectations after a divisional round loss ot the Buffalo Bills last January. On the first day of Ravens training camp practice, the star quarterback was less focused on the looming slate of games and more focused on getting better each day. Asked about his record-setting 2024 season, Jackson stated he's "just getting started" at the ripe age of 28. Jackson became the first quarterback in NFL history to post a 4,000-900 season, throwing for 41 touchdowns and almost 4,200 yards while also rushing for 915 yards and four scores. Jackson had a career low four interceptions in a season where he was at times the best passer in the NFL. The star quarterback has the NFL's most physical running back, a dynamic duo at tight end and a trio of wide receivers bolstered by the addition of DeAndre Hopkins. An ever-improving defense added Jaire Alexander on the final day of minicamp, along with two versatile studs with their first two draft picks. Still, the pressure will continue to mount for Jackson, who's just 3-5 in playoff games, with just 13 touchdowns (10 passing, three rushing) and 11 turnovers in those eight games.
