Giant radio telescope in the Utah desert could reveal hidden corners of the cosmos — and brand-new physics
A gigantic array of radio dishes proposed for the Utah desert could advance our understanding of physics and help us decode cosmic radio signals. Now, scientists have outlined how it would work.
Beginning in the 1950s, radio astronomy has opened up a powerful view into the inner workings of the universe, revealing everything from how stars form to incredible images of our galaxy's gigantic black hole. Now, astronomers are building a gigantic array of radio dishes, called the Deep Synoptic Array 2000 (DSA-2000). The array consists of 2,000 radio dishes, each 16 feet (5 meters) across, laid out in a radio-quiet part of the Utah desert.
Now, an international team of astronomers has demonstrated how DSA-2000 will be a premier instrument for revealing some of the most hidden corners, particles and processes in the cosmos.
Because DSA-2000 will have both a wide field of view and a high resolution, it will be like the world's ultimate digital camera but at radio frequencies, the team explained in a paper uploaded to the preprint database arXiv in May. These capabilities will allow the DSA-2000 to detect a wide variety of phenomena that are not possible with our current radio telescopes.
And there are a whole lot of unexplored radio transmissions in the universe. For example, astronomers think the vast majority of the mass of every galaxy comes in the form of dark matter, an invisible entity that has so far escaped direct detection.
One potential candidate for dark matter is called the axion, a hypothetical particle trillions of times lighter than the lightest known particles. Axions can collect around dense objects like neutron stars, and under the influence of extremely strong magnetic fields (which neutron stars have in spades), they can convert to photons with just the right frequency range that DSA-2000 could pick up those signals.

Another candidate for dark matter is called the dark photon, which is like our normal, familiar photons (light particles) but … dark. Dark photons can also collect around neutron stars, where they can get whipped up into a frenzy due to the star's extreme rotation. In a process called superradiance, the dark photons get boosted to extremely high energies, where they start to resonate with regular photons, giving off blasts of signals that could be directly detected by DSA-2000.
This means that DSA-2000 could potentially offer our first direct glimpse of a new form of matter in the universe. But that's not all.
In 2023, astronomers with the NANOGrav experiment announced the detection of gravitational waves through pulsar timing arrays. DSA-2000 could take that one step further by precisely measuring the rotation rates of approximately 3,000 pulsars — rapidly spinning neutron stars that pulsate in regular intervals. This would allow the new instrument to find any subtle variations in the spins of pulsars, such as those due to unseen orbiting companions, like black holes or small clumps of dark matter.

Lastly, DSA-2000 could detect tens of thousands of fast radio bursts (FRBs) — tremendous explosions that manifest as blips and bloops in the radio spectrum. This unprecedented number of detections would allow scientists to build a comprehensive survey of the nearby universe, which would aid our understanding of everything from dark energy to the nature of ghostly particles called neutrinos.
The universe is trying to whisper its secrets to us. All the answers are there, if we listen carefully enough.

AI robots fill in for weed killers and farm hands
Oblivious to the punishing midday heat, a wheeled robot powered by the sun and infused with artificial intelligence carefully combs a cotton field in California, plucking out weeds. As farms across the United States face a shortage of laborers and weeds grow resistant to herbicides, startup Aigen says its robotic solution -- named Element -- can save farmers money, help the environment and keep harmful chemicals out of food. "I really believe this is the biggest thing we can do to improve human health," co-founder and chief technology officer Richard Wurden told AFP, as robots made their way through crops at Bowles Farm in the town of Los Banos. "Everybody's eating food sprayed with chemicals." Wurden, a mechanical engineer who spent five years at Tesla, went to work on the robot after relatives who farm in Minnesota told him weeding was a costly bane. Weeds are becoming immune to herbicides, but a shortage of laborers often leaves chemicals as the only viable option, according to Wurden. "No farmer that we've ever talked to said 'I'm in love with chemicals'," added Aigen co-founder and chief executive Kenny Lee, whose background is in software. "They use it because it's a tool -- we're trying to create an alternative." Element the robot resembles a large table on wheels, solar panels on top. Metal arms equipped with small blades reach down to hoe between crop plants. "It actually mimics how humans work," Lee said as the temperature hit 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius) under a cloudless sky. "When the sun goes down, it just powers down and goes to sleep; then in the morning it comes back up and starts going again." The robot's AI system takes in data from on-board cameras, allowing it to follow crop rows and identify weeds. "If you think this is a job that we want humans doing, just spend two hours in the field weeding," Wurden said. Aigen's vision is for workers who once toiled in the heat to be "upskilled" to monitor and troubleshoot robots. Along with the on-board AI, robots communicate wirelessly with small control centers, notifying handlers of mishaps. - Future giant? - Aigen has robots running in tomato, cotton, and sugar beet fields, and touts the technology's ability to weed without damaging the crops. Lee estimated that it takes about five robots to weed 160 acres (65 hectares) of farm. The robots made by the 25-person startup -- based in the city of Redmond, outside Seattle -- are priced at $50,000. The company is focused on winning over politically conservative farmers with a climate friendly option that relies on the sun instead of costly diesel fuel that powers heavy machinery. "Climate, the word, has become politicized but when you get really down to brass tacks farmers care about their land," Lee said. The technology caught the attention of Amazon Web Services (AWS), the e-commerce giant's cloud computing unit. Aigen was chosen for AWS's "Compute for Climate" fellowship program that provides AI tools, data center power, and technical help for startups tackling environmental woes. "Aigen is going to be one of the industry giants in the future," said AWS head of climate tech startups business development Lisbeth Kaufman. Text therapy: study finds couples who use emojis in text messages feel closer
The secret to a good relationship may be staring smartphone users in the face. A new study published in the journal Plos One found that using emojis in text messages makes people feel closer and more satisfied in their personal lives. Related: Emoji dumping: how to say it's over when you can't be bothered with words Researchers at the University of Texas spoke to 260 people aged between 23 and 67 and asked them to read 15 text message exchanges that varied only in the presence or absence of emojis. Participants were instructed to imagine themselves as the sender of each message while focusing on the recipient's replies to evaluate responsiveness, likability, closeness and relationship satisfaction. The study revealed that people who send emojis combined with text are seen to be more responsive in their relationships than people who send text alone. It also found emojis serve as nonverbal cues that signal attentiveness and emotional engagement. Luke McGregor, 42, and Amy Thunig-McGregor, 37, say being able to use emojis helps their family communicate better. Luke said he wasn't a regular emoji sender at the start of their relationship and had to learn to start incorporating them into text messages to Amy. 'I traditionally didn't use emojis that much but when I first got [together] with Amy, I noticed them using them a lot, so there was a vulnerability or a hurdle I had to get over to start using them myself,' McGregor said. 'I wanted Amy to know that they were loved, and so to become a regular sender of emojis to Amy in order to communicate affection was at least initially a big deal for me.' Amy said emojis were a good tool to enhance their communication. 'We're both autistic as well for context … it helps us really be clear with tone and intention in a way that isn't possible with just written text,' they said. Senior lecturer in psychology at Central Queensland University Dr Raquel Peel, who was not involved in the study, said sending emojis can be a creative alternative when people are unable to see their partner face to face. 'I don't think we can replace face-to-face interactions because we are talking about intimate partnerships and relationships, but we have to be realistic that this isn't always possible,' Peel said. 'So if you can't meet face to face with your partner for whatever reason staying connected is important. 'Using emojis is then an effective alternative.' Her advice was to not underestimate the value of communication in a relationship and to always try and stay connected to your partner in whatever way you communicate. 'One thing that people also forget when I'm talking to them about relationships is the value of humour and having a bit of fun,' Peel said. 'So if emojis can serve a purpose that way, which we know they can, it adds to the element of fun and connection through humour and that is really important.'

Study Finds Simple Change Can Help Manage Blood Sugar
Getting up from the dining table with haste may be the key to managing one's blood sugar, a new study finds. People often experience glucose spikes after eating, particularly when consuming foods high in carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, rice and grains. It's become a known health hack that going on a post-meal walk can help curb sugary spikes caused by such foods. But a study published on Scientific Reports on Wednesday took things even further. The researchers looked into the intricacies of the post-meal walk, particularly with how immediate one has to start walking to receive the most health benefits. The study analyzed a group of 12 people to compare the difference between going on a 10-minute walk right after glucose intake and going on a 30-minute walk a half hour after glucose intake. The findings showed that both methods significantly reduced average blood glucose levels compared to remaining at rest after a meal. However, the 10-minute walk was deemed to be "uniquely effective" at minimizing the peak glucose levels for each individual compared to the delayed 30-minute walk. Participants also rated the 10-minute walk as "significantly easier" than the longer one despite having to start the former with a fuller stomach. It doesn't take a scientist to figure out that last part. Getting a walk in earlier can yield even better results in terms of blood sugar maintenance than putting off a stroll just a little longer. The study suggests that not even tripling the walk duration would give you the same level of benefit.
