Maoist-hit Bijapur gets closer to mainstream, one mobile tower at a time
A mobile tower may be ubiquitous in most parts of India, but in Bijapur, a sprawling 6,500 sq km district in Chhattisgarh that is one of the worst-hit by Left-Wing Extremism, it is a means to bring villagers living under the shadow of Maoists closer to the mainstream.
Over the last 18 months, as operations against Maoists have picked up pace, the local administration has also embarked on a mission to bolster mobile connectivity, installing twice as many mobile towers as compared to the previous two years.
The Bastar region comprises seven districts — Bastar, Kondagaon, Kanker, Narayanpur, Dantewada, Bijapur and Sukma. A look at anti-Maoist operations indicates Bijapur is the worst-hit, which makes implementing development activities a challenge, officials say. According to officials, Maoists destroy mobile towers as they believe these will help police informers in remote villages alert security forces.
Maoists have set on fire eight mobile towers in the district since 2022, including six in 2024-2025. However, the pushback by forces since 2024 has helped the administration install 48 mobile towers between January 2024 and June 2025, providing coverage to 110 villages in Bijapur. In comparison, 24 towers were installed in 2022 and 2023.
One of the mobile towers installed last month was in the Kutru area, where eight security personnel and a civilian driver were killed in an IED blast in January.
'As of mid-2025, significant strides have been made in enhancing mobile connectivity across Bijapur, particularly in its remote and previously insurgency-affected areas. Bijapur likely has around 45% of its villages covered by mobile network, with approximately 300 villages having coverage, many of which are currently part of ongoing government tower deployment efforts,' District Collector Sambit Mishra told The Indian Express.
Still, nearly 400 villages in Bijapur district continue to experience limited networks. Detailing the challenges, Bijapur SP Jitendra Kumar Yadav said, 'We made 20 camps in the last two years. It is difficult to install mobile towers; in the last two years, six towers have been sabotaged. We are able to install towers close to the camps. In a security vacuum, this is always difficult.'

Erecting mobile towers is challenging due to tough terrain, limited connectivity, and persistent security threats. Yet, every mobile tower we install brings a village closer to the mainstream — enabling digital access, financial inclusion, and emergency services. The grateful smile on the face of the villagers makes every effort worth it.'

He made a poll on X amid the feud asking: 'Is it time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80% in the middle?' TMC MLA Madan Mitra apologises for comment on law college rape case: ‘I am a party loyalist'
Trinamool Congress MLA Madan Mitra has submitted a response to the show-cause notice issued to him by the party, following his remarks on an alleged rape case at a law college in South Kolkata. Mitra, the Kamarhati MLA, dispatched his reply to the party on Monday night, adhering to the three-day deadline. On Saturday, he had made comments that drew widespread criticism, stating that the student 'should not have gone to the college alone' on June 25, when the incident happened. The Trinamool Congress distanced itself from Mitra's comments. On Saturday night, the party issued a statement clarifying that Madan's remarks were 'personal' and did not reflect the party's stance. The following day, TMC state president Subrata Bakshi formally issued a show-cause letter to Mitra. The letter stated that Mitra's 'unwanted, unnecessary and insensitive comments' on the incident had 'hurt the image of our party in every way'. It demanded an explanation within three days for this 'behavior that violates party discipline.' The party's top leadership had already expressed deep regret, asserting that the administration was taking 'necessary action', with the accused already 'identified' and arrested. Sources said Mitra's reply to the show-cause notice was brief but two-pronged. In the first part, he reportedly offered an 'unconditional apology to the party for his comments.' Srinagar businessman alleges DDC member asked for Rs 5 lakh bribe after school inspection
The Anti-Corruption Bureau in Jammu and Kashmir said Tuesday it had arrested an elected member of the District Development Council (DDC) for allegedly demanding a Rs 5 lakh bribe from a Srinagar-based businessman who also runs a boarding school in Harwan. In a statement, the ACB identified the accused as Mohammad Shaban Chopan, a member of the Srinagar District Development Council. An alleged tout working for him has also been arrested. A blank cheque signed by the complainant and Rs 50,000 given by him in cash were recovered from the arrested DDC member, the ACB said. The complainant has claimed that he has been running a boarding school with a swimming pool and a guest house in Check Dara, Srinagar's Harwan, for some time. He said that an official inspection was conducted at his site, and he discovered Chopan, a resident of Dara, had arranged it. Later, Chopan, through Ghulam Mohammad Khathana, allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 5 lakh and asked the complainant to pay Rs 50,000 as the first instalment along with a blank cheque, the ACB said. The complainant was allegedly told he should pay the remaining amount after getting the required clearances. Acting on the complaint, the ACB said it conducted a discreet verification through a designated officer, which confirmed the allegations. Subsequently, a trap team was constituted, and a successful trap was laid, the ACB said. The ACB said that during the operation, the accused and his tout were caught allegedly demanding and accepting Rs 50,000 and a blank signed cheque from the complainant, adding that they were immediately apprehended. The District Development Councils were envisioned as a third tier of governance in Jammu and Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370. A legislation to this effect was brought in by the Ministry of Home Affairs on October 16, 2020, through an amendment to the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act, 1989.
