They are free to go – Maresca says unhappy players can leave Chelsea
PA Media/dpa Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has told any player unhappy at the club they can leave. It is proving a busy summer at Stamford Bridge with recent signings Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr now joined by Jamie Gittens, with Estevao Willian arriving before the new season. The likes of Raheem Sterling, Joao Felix, Axel Disasi and Ben Chilwell, who are not with the squad at the Club World Cup, are among those who could move on. There has also been speculation about the futures of Noni Madueke, Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson, who have been involved in the United States. Maresca said: 'My message to the players and to the club is that I want just players that are happy to be with us. The ones that are not happy, they are free to go.' It is now vital Chelsea sell players to balance the books after they were punished by European governing body UEFA for breaches of financial regulations on Friday. Chelsea were fined ?31 million and will only be allowed to register newly-signed players for the Champions League if they end the transfer window with a 'positive balance'. Maresca, when asked after his side's 2-1 Club World Cup quarter-final win over Palmeiras in Philadelphia, did not comment on the matter. He said: 'I already struggle to do my job. To be honest, there are things that I don't pay attention to. 'I just pay attention to how to work day by day with the players. How can I improve them? How can I improve the team? And try to win as much as we can.' Maresca was happier to discuss the performance of Pedro, who was brought on for his debut following his £60million move from Brighton as a second-half substitute. His entrance was prompted by a stunning equaliser from Estevao, who shone on what proved his final outing for Palmeiras before his switch to London. Pedro played a prominent part in Chelsea's response before they eventually won with a late own goal. Maresca said: 'Even if he was on holiday he looks sharp, he looks good. We gave him some minutes. The reason why he's here is because we like him and we are sure that he's going to help us.' The game was also watched by English winger Gittens, whose £55million move from Borussia Dortmund was confirmed on Saturday. Maresca said: 'Jamie was here, he was on the pitch. He will be with us probably one or two days more. Then he will go for a holiday and come back when we're going to start the new season.'

Chelsea reach Club World Cup semis as late own goal downs Palmeiras
PA Media/dpa Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Chelsea defeated Palmeiras 2-1 and reached the Club World Cup semi-finals thanks to a fortuitous late own goal by the Brazilian side. Extra time was looming at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania when Malo Gusto's cross took deflections off Agustin Giay and goalkeeper Weverton and ended up in the back of the Brazilians' net in the 83rd minute. The London side had led early on through Cole Palmer but were pegged back by a superb strike from Estevao Willian, the 18-year-old winger who will join them after the tournament. Palmeiras had been threatening to finish the stronger but Gusto's late stroke of luck ensured it was Chelsea who went through to face Fluminense in the last four. The contest was played in vibrant atmosphere with the crowd, perhaps helped by the dynamically-priced tickets having dropped as low as $11 earlier in the day, an impressive 65,782. That was despite the counter-attraction of a free Independence Day concert and firework display in downtown Philadelphia - albeit one for which headline act LL Cool J pulled out. The soundtrack to the evening was provided by the constant drumbeat and singing of Palmeiras' sizeable following. It was a noise Chelsea could not silence but, despite being forced into a late reshuffle after captain Reece James was injured in the warm-up, they settled the quickest. Pedro Neto started despite having considered missing the game following the death of his Portugal team-mate Diogo Jota, the Liverpool forward, and he held up a shirt bearing his name, and that of his brother Andre Silva, during a pre-match moment's silence. Palmer had already forced a good save from Weverton when he opened the scoring following a fine run and finish on 16 minutes. The England international wrong-footed a defender with a quick turn and he then swerved past another challenge before delivering a left-foot shot into the bottom corner. Chelsea could have increased their lead as Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez tested Weverton and Trevoh Chalobah and Christopher Nkunku missed the target. With Cucurella giving Estevao a tough time until this point, Palmeiras struggled to create openings. They finally threatened just before the interval but Robert Sanchez comfortably saved Vanderlan's header and Bruno Fuchs nodded over after the restart. It proved the start of a good spell for the Sao Paulo side and the equaliser came as Estevao took a pass from the right and lashed in a shot from a tight angle. It was a stunning finish and Chelsea immediately responded by sending on Joao Pedro for his debut following his #60million move from Brighton. Chelsea had a scare when Allan drove narrowly wide and Levi Colwill needed to make a last-gasp interception prevent another Palmeiras chance. But they had a good opportunity themselves when Cucurella shot over and then edged in front when Gusto's cross took a ricochet and fooled Weverton. It was a decisive blow and Noni Madueke almost added a third when his late shot was tipped onto the post by Weverton. Liam Delap and Colwill will miss the semi-final after being booked.
