Return of popular Johnstone Fire Engine Rally could be on the cards amid councillor's plea

Councillor Andy Doig issued a call to reinstate the popular parade of the vintage engines at last week's full council meeting.
A return of the much-loved Johnstone Fire Engine Rally could be on the cards as Renfrewshire Council develops a calendar of cultural events for its town centres.
Councillor Andy Doig delivered a plea to reinstate the popular parade of the vintage engines from the fire station to Houstoun Square at last week's full council meeting.

The independent politician received the unanimous support of elected members in the chambers for his motion on Thursday.

The call was issued amid a suggestion the hot topic may already be under consideration by the local authority as part of a £150,000 budget investment.
Councillor Doig, an independent representative for Johnstone North and the surrounding villages, explained why he is so eager to see the re-emergence of the rally which ran in the town from 2014 until 2019.
He told the Paisley Daily Express: "I wanted to make it clear there was a feeling among the community and among the traders that it would be a good thing to bring it back.
"For a number of years, right up until Covid, it was an extremely successful event because what they did was the fire tenders would meet at the fire station in Johnstone and they would come down to Houstoun Square.
"It was a big event and people could see them coming down then go to the square.
"It was magic. There would always be a bit of a buzz about the place and the traders would really benefit.

Youngsters would have the opportunity to climb on board the various emergency vehicles and see how they had transformed over the years.
Councillor Doig added: "It was a great event for families because the kids loved it. It was always very popular with the children of Johnstone."
The veteran politician's motion, which was agreed at the meeting without a hitch, asked the local authority to recognise the "success and popularity" of the rally for both retailers and the community alike in the past.
It added: "Council instructs the council's events team to liaise with the Fire Brigades Union and calls for the reinstatement of the Johnstone Fire Engine Rally as soon as possible."

‘Outstanding' UK car dealership to be BULLDOZED after 50 years of business under new plans

AN 'OUTSTANDING' car dealership is set to be bulldozed after serving customers for 50 years. The space is expected to be completely transformed into a huge two-story shop. 2 2 The former TDI Autos at 3-7 The Parade on the A127 is set to be demolished in the plans. Locals said the garage had been "outstanding" before sadly closing after 50 years. A new retail unit will be installed in the space, across a total of 538 square metres. However, the type of shop moving into the space has not yet been revealed. There will be a 'large commercial floor area', as well as a loading bay and a staff area - according to planning documents. An internal staircase will lead shoppers to a mezzanine area and more retail floorspace. According to planning documents drawn up by Spatial Design Architects, on behalf of the applicant GDI Developments LLP, the pre-application enquiry was submitted on November 2018. After the initial enquiry, pre-application meetings were held with Transport for London (TfL) and planning officers throughout 2024. Planning officers raised concerns about the site's location, saying it could cause 'noise and disturbance' on the already busy A127. Havering Council also put forward a 'comprehensive redevelopment' of the site, which would have seen the neighbouring 1-2 location being regenerated. All UK car dealerships will STOP selling 10,000s of iconic brand's used models impacted by lethal airbag flaw However, the planning statement says that this was not 'currently feasible' for the applicant. TfL raised concerns to ensure that the network was not "compromised" during the planned window for the closure. Spatial Design Architects said in its planning statement that all the concerns had been addressed and that the applicant has plans to ensure "minimal disruption" during construction. Havering Council is expected to make a decision on the application by September 2. Spatial Design Architects has been approached for comment by The Sun. The news comes as car dealerships close their doors across the country, as manufacturers battle rising production costs and international tariffs. With the rise in production costs, the price of buying a car has grown too - leading to declining sales. Marshall Motor Group confirmed that 138 of its stores will close across the UK, after Stallantis UK - the owner of Peugeot and Vauxhall - terminated its contract with the brand. Speaking to The Sun, a source said: 'Staff at all four branches have been told the exact same thing. 'There is a lot of purposefully confusing jargon being thrown around, but essentially they are not renewing the contracts with Stellantis. 'There are roughly 60 people at each location, so we're looking at dozens of jobs being put at risk. 'They didn't give staff any particular reason, it doesn't seem to make much sense to them.'

New EV chargers for anyone without a driveway as major trial hits parts of UK

For years, Brits who don't have a driveway have been forced to pay sky-high prices at public charging stations to keep their electric vehicles (EVs) running — but a new trial is about to change that In a huge victory for electric vehicle (EV) owners, Brits in certain parts of the UK will soon be able to charge their cars at home even if they don't have a driveway. ‌ Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council has approved a cross-pavement charging trial, with the aim of helping EV owners who don't have access to off-street parking. The system involves installing cable channels, known as gullies, beneath the pavements of residential streets. ‌ These gullies allow people to run a charging cable across the pavement in a safe and unobtrusive way, making it possible to charge EVs using a home electricity supply. The system is intended for people who live in terraced housing or properties with no driveway — a situation that currently makes at-home vehicle charging difficult. ‌ Having been approved by BCP Council, the trial is set to begin sometime in the near future, with the possibility of being expanded to more areas if successful. While residents will be required to cover the cost of installing a gully and charging socket, some of that expense may be reduced through government support. The idea is part of the government's wider efforts to increase EV uptake and infrastructure, as well as expanding access to reliable, affordable EV charging. Local authorities in Devon and Suffolk are also piloting similar schemes, supported by guidance from the Department for Transport. ‌ Andy Hadley, BCP Council's portfolio holder for environment, said: "Charging gullies could make owning an electric vehicle a more attractive option for residents that do not have off-street parking. This is exactly the sort of innovative solution that residents have been asking us to provide and is an important part of our wider EV strategy. In addition to making car at-home charging more accessible, we are committed to rolling out more convenient public charging points." The idea reflects a growing push to ensure fairer access to EV technology, particularly in densely populated urban areas. The government identified charging infrastructure as one of the key barriers to EV adoption. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said Labour is making it "easier and cheaper" to own an EV. She continued: "We know access to charging is a barrier for people thinking of making the switch, and we are tackling that head-on so that everyone — whether or not they have a driveway – can access the benefits of going electric." ‌ The news comes as a new £63 million round of government funding looks set to accelerate Britain's EV revolution, including a £25 million scheme for local authorities focused on improving access to at-home charging for households without off-street parking. This includes the introduction of cross-pavement charging technology, which enables families to tap into cheaper domestic electricity rates, potentially saving them up to £1,500 a year in comparison to running an ICE vehicle. BCP Council discussed the plans in more detail on Wednesday, July 16, voting unanimously in favour of the paper and recommendations they need to bring to council to implement the cross-pavement EV charging trial. The Bill was presented and proposed by Councillor Andy Hadley and seconded by Councillor Richard Burton. Mr Hadley explained that when they previously took the EV charging strategy to council in January 2024, they noted 'a real disparity between the position of somebody who's got a driveway and the ability to charge a car on their own drive, from their own domestic supply, at minimal cost, and people who don't have a driveway and have to use the public infrastructure — the cost per kW is significantly more'. He also laid out the situation regarding the charging infrastructure currently in place in the borough. They have 110 high-capacity public charging devices with 220 sockets, mainly in car parks, and are close to introducing a further 500 locations with 1,000 low-speed (7kW) sockets in residential areas for overnight charging. If the pilot scheme is deemed a success, similar pavement gully systems could appear across more streets in the conurbation, and eventually the nation, helping to support the UK's transition to cleaner, greener transport.
