Our Place founder warns supermarket dupes will 'cause businesses to fail'

Leader Live12 hours ago
Our Place co-founder and co-chief executive Shiza Shahid said the brand was growing rapidly in the UK despite dupes appearing on the market.
Ms Shahid launched the Los Angeles-based business with her husband in 2019, with Will Smith's Dreamers VC, Jay-Z's Marcy Venture Partners, and Gwyneth Paltrow among its early investors.
It specialises in kitchenware including pans designed to be non-toxic and non-stick, and collections created in complementary colours and aesthetics.
Widely-shared posts on social media, especially Instagram, have helped drive popularity of the brand in recent years – including a collaboration with actress and singer Selena Gomez.
Similar versions of bestselling products – namely the 'Always Pan' which currently sells for £125 – have recently launched in supermarkets including Aldi and Marks & Spencer with a lower price tag.
Ms Shahid told the PA news agency: 'Unfortunately I think it is incredibly harmful.
'When we started Our Place, my partner and I bootstrapped our savings and worked on the design for two years before we ever sold a single unit.
'And when multi-million dollar corporations come and they knock it off, with no regard for innovation, IP, small business, they are causing tremendous harm and it will cause a lot of businesses to fail, and it will destroy innovation.'
She said such companies are 'very skilled in the art of duplicity' which makes it difficult and costly for smaller brands to legally challenge.
But the businesswoman told PA that they were 'not able to guarantee that same level of detail and quality' with replica products.
'So we trust that, while not every consumer will see the difference, many will and many do,' she said, adding that shoppers often want to 'support brands that they believe in'.
A spokesman for Aldi said: 'For over 35 years we have championed customers by offering high quality exclusive products at the lowest possible prices.
'We go to great lengths to ensure that all our exclusive brand products are compliant with strict copyright laws and regulations.'
M&S has been contacted for comment.
Ms Shahid, who also co-founded the Malala Fund with Nobel Prize winner and campaigner Malala Yousafzai, said Our Place products are typically viewed as an 'accessible luxury'.
'Despite some of the cost-of-living challenges, people are investing in the home and kitchen,' she told PA.
'The first thing you do is maybe you go out a little bit less, but then you still want the joy and the nourishment and the connection, and home cooking is a really great way to do that.
'It feels like an everyday luxury… people are choosing products that will last, that will bring joy, and that will actually help them save money over time.'
Sales across the brand spiked by 92% over the first quarter of 2025 compared with the same period last year, and it has built more than a million active customers.
It is also set to launch a shop-in-shop space within London department store Selfridges amid efforts to expand into retailers and take on established competitors such as Le Creuset.
Ms Shahid said Our Place has 'a lot of younger consumers but we also have a lot of men and women in their 60s', while many of its products – including the countertop 'wonder oven' – appeal to single-person households and small families.

'Superman' director James Gunn remakes the hero for the big screen

LOS ANGELES, July 7 (Reuters) - James Gunn, writer and director of the off-kilter "Guardians of the Galaxy" films, tussled with various ideas on how to deliver a new take on Superman to the big screen. Gunn said he was aware of the many ways the noble hero had been approached since his 1938 debut, initially in comic books and then radio serials, television shows and movies. The challenge was to deliver something fresh that would appeal to a new generation of moviegoers and reinvigorate Warner Bros Discovery's (WBD.O), opens new tab DC Studios. His vision, in the movie titled simply "Superman," starts rolling out in international theaters on Wednesday and in the United States and Canada on Friday. In the opening scene, Superman, played for the first time by David Corenswet, is seen bloodied after a fight, an unusual portrayal for the Man of Steel. "I wanted to take the character of Superman and just focus on a piece of him that we haven't necessarily seen before," Gunn said. Gunn surrounded Superman with elements that enthralled him from the comics as a child. Superman lives in a world, Gunn said, with "superhero friends and giant monsters and flying dogs, robots and all this magical stuff." The new film includes Superman's four-legged sidekick, a superpowered dog named Krypto first introduced in a 1955 comic. The latest version is based on Gunn's real-life, misbehaving rescue mutt. Warner Bros is counting on "Superman" to start a new era at DC Studios, which has failed to match the superhero success of Walt Disney-owned (DIS.N), opens new tab Marvel. Gunn, who made the "Guardians" movies for Marvel, was named co-CEO of DC Studios, alongside producer Peter Safran, in 2022. The pair have plotted a long-term slate that features a Supergirl movie for June 2026, a film based on Swamp Thing and TV shows for HBO Max. Wonder Woman and Batman also are expected to return to cinemas. Gunn said the aesthetic that audiences see in "Superman" will not necessarily foreshadow future DC Studios endeavors. "I want to be really certain that every project has its own unique flavor," Gunn said. "We're doing Clayface, and that doesn't feel like this movie. It's an R-rated horror movie. We're doing 'Lanterns,' which is an HBO show, which feels very much like an HBO show, very grounded, very kind of brutal. We have 'Peacemaker,' which is an adult show with a lot of emotion and a lot of comedy." Gunn admitted he has felt the weight of responsibility to produce a hit. "I've felt pressure all along," Gunn said. "That's been difficult." But as he started to see initial reaction to the film, "I'm feeling pretty good," he said. "It's pretty fun. I'm seeing the effect the movie has on people."

'Happy tears': Jessie J reveals breast cancer surgery was a success

Singer Jessie J has revealed her breast cancer surgery was a success and that the disease has not spread. In a post on Instagram, the 37-year-old said she was crying 'happy tears'. The Price Tag singer announced in June that she had been diagnosed with early breast cancer and was undergoing surgery. Sharing a video of her son saying 'mummy's going to be okay' before her surgery, she wrote: 'And… I AM OK'. She added that her results showed her cancer had not spread and thanked everyone for their well wishes. In good humour, she continued: 'Lots of healing to go and one more surgery to make these cousins looks more like sisters. 'But for now its gratitude time.' Signing the post off, she joked that she was changing her name to 'The LopJess Monster'. Jessie J has been open about her diagnosis and has regularly posted updated about her recovery on social media. Last week, she said it had been 'nice to slow down', but it is 'still uncomfortable' and a 'little painful'. The singer-songwriter, best known for her number one songs Domino, Price Tag, and Bang Bang, performed at Capital's Summertime Ball at Wembley Stadium on June 15 and made an emotional speech promising to 'beat breast cancer' in her final performance before her surgery. She said: 'I feel so proud to be feeling OK, to be this honest person where you say what you feel, and this being my last show before I go and have surgery.' The artist has faced ill health throughout her life, having been diagnosed with a heart condition aged eight, suffering a minor stroke aged 18 and having briefly gone deaf in 2020. She was awarded four Mobo awards in 2011, including best UK act, best newcomer, best song for Do It Like A Dude and best album with Who You Are and won the Brit Award for rising star in 2011. Heartbroken Jack Fincham reveals cruel ‘loved one' branded him ‘a fat 33 year old loser' as he makes boxing comeback

Jack recently opened up about his battle with his weight, confessing to going days without eating fighting back Heartbroken Jack Fincham reveals cruel 'loved one' branded him 'a fat 33 year old loser' as he makes boxing comeback Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) JACK Fincham has revealed a cruel 'loved one' once branded him a 'fat 33-year-old loser' as he makes his boxing career comeback. Love Island legend Jack, 34, has battled a number of crippling personal issues in recent years, having opened up about living with bulimia for two decades as well as his addictions to drugs, alcohol and gambling. Now Jack has shared the heartbreaking reason behind his determination to turn his life around. Writing on Instagram, he said: 'I got called a fat 33 year old loser, a s*** boxer and everybody knows I'm s***. 'Imagine that from a 'loved one'. Only makes me have more heart and determination. 'I'll never stop training as hard as I can and I will reach my goal of southern area champion in professional boxing.' Jack added: 'Hurt my feelings but [I'm] using that as fuel. The backing I have, I can't lose now. My trainers believe in me so I believe in myself. Sticks and stones.' Opening up about his long battle with bulimia recently, Jack told how he'd go days without eating and, at one point, weighed just over eight stone. Speaking exclusively to The Sun, he said: 'I have been a bulimic for 19 years, bingeing on food and then being sick. 'There have been days when I have ordered a McDonald's breakfast on Uber Eats, then gone to the Co-op and bought 12 bags of salt- and-vinegar McCoy's crisps, then had bags and bags of fizzy belt sweets. 'I have had two large Domino's pizzas with all the sides. It makes me feel ashamed. Jack Fincham reveals been secretly battling bulimia for 20 years "There have been so many times that I have gone to the garage and got the same thing — a Ginsters Cornish pasty, one of their peppered steak slices, a sausage roll, bags of sweets and more McCoy's. 'I'd eat it all, then go to the downstairs toilet at my mum's — because nobody could hear me, as it was in the hall, next to the front door. I know it's gross, but for years I didn't actually think I had a problem.' He added: "I'd go three days with hardly any food and was so starving, my mum asked my boxing club if I could eat. 'They told her I could have a jacket potato with beans. I weighed just 52kg." Jack won Love Island in 2018 with ex-girlfriend Dani Dyer. The couple split just nine months later. Since then Jack has been in an on/off relationship with former Towie star Chloe Brockett, with him confirming last month they'd split for the eighth time. 5 Jack won Love Island with ex-girlfriend Dani Dyer in 2018 Credit: Shutterstock
