'I want to thank the entire entertainment and creative industry, you have come a long way,' Johnson said in accepting the award. 'Back in the days, we used to just be happy to watch the Grammys, but now, during Grammy nominations, people are saying how many Nigerians were nominated — that's how far we have come.'
The 17th Headies Awards show also paid homage to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, executive governor of Lagos, for his dedication to the creative sector.
For his contributions to the creative industry and innovative leadership in advancing the digital ecosystem across Africa, Alex Okosi (managing director, Google Africa) received the special recognition award. Amaju Pinnick (chairman/GCEO Brownhill Group) also received the special recognition award for his contributions to Nigeria's creative and cultural industries.
The Headies Awards, originally called the Hip Hop World Awards, was established in 2006 by the Hip Hop World magazine of Nigeria to recognize outstanding achievements in the Nigerian music industry.
Only music materials released and distributed on digital streaming platforms, and physical music media within the eligibility period (April 1, 2023, to July 31, 2024) were considered for nominations.

Halton District School Board's Free Summer Camp Celebrates Black Identity and Culture
The Halton District School Board (HDSB) is once again demonstrating its commitment to equity and culturally responsive education through Exploring Us 2025, a free three-week summer camp hosted by the HDSB's Graduation Coaches for grade 6 to 8 students. The program strives to affirm the identities of Black-identifying students, foster relationships, unleash creativity, and create lasting memories. Shelita Walker, System Principal of Human Rights, Equity and Inclusive Education at HDSB, says, 'Through our HDSB Student Voices Report, Black students continue to tell us there's still work to do when it comes to addressing anti-Black racism in schools and creating spaces where they truly feel they belong, where their identities are seen, valued, and affirmed.' Exploring Us 2025 is a chance for students to connect with each other and with Graduation Coaches while learning about the diversity of the African diaspora — both its history and its ongoing contributions. 'There's always a bit of hesitation about giving up part of the summer, which is completely understandable, but every year, students who take part tell us they're really glad they did,' says Walker. Her words reaffirm why this camp is both timely and a much-needed resource for Black students growing up in Halton Region. The program, now at capacity, is led by HDSB's Graduation Coaches and offers a dynamic, engaging experience that centres Black identity, history, and joy. Running from July 8 to July 24, the camp features weekly themes that take students on an immersive cultural journey — from ancient African civilizations to the Caribbean diaspora and the histories of Black Canadians. Through hands-on workshops, field trips, games, storytelling, and art, students are invited to connect with their heritage, explore identity, and build community in a supportive space. In the first week, students delve into the innovation and legacy of ancient African civilizations through creative projects, collaborative activities, and cultural games that spark curiosity and connection. The second week celebrates the richness and resilience of Afro-Caribbean traditions. Through storytelling, music, and interactive arts, students explore language, folklore, and rhythms that reflect their heritage and inspire creative expression. The final week brings the focus closer to home, exploring the experiences and contributions of Black Canadians. Students engage in activities that highlight history, identity, and belonging, while also exploring connections between cultural heritage, beauty, and self-expression. Camp experiences are grounded in creativity and collaboration and further enhanced with experiential learning through field trips. 'Graduation Coaches have been such an important part of our board and a real support for the students they work with. The connections they build, during the school year and even through the summer, go a long way in helping students feel grounded in who they are. They really help students see what's possible and encourage them to go after their goals. It just shows how powerful intentional relationships can be,' says Walker. Error! Levitt Pavilion's summer concert series in MacArthur Park to continue despite ICE raids
The annual Levitt Pavilion Los Angeles summer concert series held at MacArthur Park will go on despite the ongoing immigration raids, organizers said. After canceling its first performance of the season on June 21, Levitt LA returned to its scheduled programming on June 28 with a performance from rock band Dengue Fever. The stage will welcome musical performances every Saturday through Aug. 30, featuring acts like Medusa, Eddie Chacon, Wazumbians, La Resistencia, Kinky and Redd Kross. 'I have nothing but respect and utmost gratitude for the team and artists who want to move forward. Why should this stop in MacArthur Park?' Levitt LA executive director Allegra Padilla said. 'Our safety is not guaranteed in places that are supposed to be our sanctuaries, like hospitals, schools and other places, so we might as well continue to come together in the heart of our city and enjoy the vibrant and beautiful culture that makes L.A. unique,' she added. Close to 2,800 people have been arrested in the L.A. area since the raids began in early June, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Federal agents, accompanied by members of the National Guard, descended on MacArthur Park on Monday morning to carry out enforcement operations. Rumors of ICE activity had spread in the Westlake area prior to the sweeps. It's unclear if anyone was arrested. Levitt LA has been hosting free concerts for the past 18 years. In previous years, the outdoor stage has held performances from Grammy-winning band Los Lobos, cumbia group Sonora Dinamita and L.A. rock band La Santa Cecilia. Padilla added that the concerts will be streamed live on its Facebook page and YouTube channel for members of the community who are 'afraid to leave their homes' because of the ICE raids. The organization will also be hiring private security for the event and providing safety tips on knowing your rights when dealing with immigration through their social media accounts. Padilla said Levitt LA is prepared to pivot to a different venue in case MacArthur Park is not a place where programming can continue. 'We're lucky to have a network of venues that are willing to support us in the case that we may have to make a shift,' she added. Attendance numbers were low during its last event compared to previous years, but Padilla hopes the public continues to enjoy the arts that 'will get us through these tough times.' 'The heart of creativity and our joy is the resistance and unity that we need at this moment.' The canceled performance scheduled for June 21 by the cumbia band Vilma Díaz y la Sonora will be rescheduled to July 26.
