Maharashtra revokes three-language policy: School education dept issues fresh GR formally cancelling earlier GRs

The state school education department has issued another Government Resolution (GR), formally cancelling the earlier two GRs issued on April 16 and June 17 on the contentious three-language policy, inducting Hindi as the third language in primary schools. The new GR also states that the formation of a committee, to be headed by Dr Narendra Jadhav to take a relook into the three-language policy in primary sections, is underway. The committee will submit its recommendations within three months. After multiple revisions, the three-language policy for Classes 1 to 5 in Marathi- and English-medium schools of the Maharashtra state board was finally rolled back by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday. He announced that the earlier two GRs had been revoked and that the committee led by Dr Jadhav would now give fresh recommendations. Despite the CM's assurance, several stakeholders in the school education sector had said another GR was necessary providing a written assurance on the rollback. The latest GR, issued late on Monday, reiterates the cancellation of the earlier two contentious GRs and states that a new committee is being constituted in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The GR states that the committee 'will determine the policy regarding implementation of the three-language formula in schools, specifically from which grade and in what manner it should be implemented. It will study the report submitted by Dr Raghunath Mashelkar's committee concerning the three-language formula in NEP 2020. It will also engage in discussions with all relevant stakeholders, organisations, and individuals before making recommendations to the state.' The GR further adds, 'The committee will examine the approach taken by other states and Union Territories in India that have adopted NEP 2020, with particular attention on how they have implemented the three-language formula, keeping students' best interests in mind. Based on this report, the government will make an appropriate decision at the state level regarding the implementation of the three-language formula.'

‘Speak Marathi': Raj Thackeray's MNS Workers Slap Restaurant Owner In Thane

Last Updated: The video of the incident shows MNS workers engaged in a heated exchange with the shop owner, repeatedly questioning why he refuses to speak Marathi in Maharashtra. The workers of Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) assaulted an elderly North Indian restaurant owner for not speaking Marathi in Thane district. The incident, which occurred at Mira Road where three MNS workers confronted the shop owner over language, has sparked outrage and social media debate. The video of the incident shows MNS workers engaged in a heated exchange with the shop owner, repeatedly questioning why he refuses to speak Marathi in Maharashtra. The vendor questioned, 'Why should we speak in Marathi?" One of the party workers immediately responded with a threat, saying, 'Maar khayaga?" The vendor insisted that he did not know Marathi, prompting the MNS workers to ask if he was aware of the state he was working in and the language spoken there. The vendor replied, 'All languages are spoken here," further fueling the tension. The verbal altercation quickly escalated into violence as MNS workers began slapping the vendor in front of his food stall, while bystanders looked on as the incident unfolded. महाराष्ट्र में मनसे कार्यकर्ताओं ने मराठी न बोलने पर एक दुकानदार को थप्पड़ मार दिया !! — Sachin Gupta (@SachinGuptaUP) July 1, 2025 Notably, MNS chief Raj Thackeray recently voiced strong opposition to what he described as efforts to elevate Hindi above Marathi, asserting that such attempts would not be tolerated. He made the remarks while criticising the move to introduce Hindi as a third language in primary schools across Maharashtra. 'People are trying to make the 150 to 200-year-old Hindi language appear superior to Marathi, which has a history of over 3,000 years. This is unacceptable, and I will not allow it," Thackeray said. He challenged the validity of labelling Hindi as the national language in a linguistically diverse nation. 'Hindi is not the rashtra bhasha (national language) to be imposed on other states. This kind of coercion is not right." First Published: July 01, 2025, 22:06 IST

BJP slams RJD of undermining PM's efforts to uplift backward classes, accuses Tejashwi of pushing ‘Sharia agenda'

New Delhi, July 1 (UNI) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National Spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia today accused Bihar's former Deputy CM and Leader of Opposition, Tejashwi Yadav of 'undermining' Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts to uplift backward classes, Dalits, and women and said that Rashtriya Janata Dal's sole objective is the 'imposition of Sharia law in India, and to empower only one community." "Tejashwi Yadav's party, RJD, is destroying the idea of empowering these marginalized sections. While they talk about Sharia, the BJP will continue to talk about the Constitution," he said during a press conference at BJP headquarters in Delhi. Asserting that 'Mahathugbandhan' is openly against the Constitution , the BJP spokesperson said, "The Congress manifesto said that it wanted to implement Sharia Law. Personal Laws will be implemented. Reservations will be based on religion, which is against the Constitution. NDA will never allow their plans to succeed. On 2010 May 7, Lalu Prasad Yadav said that the Waqf board has snatched the land of the government and the common man and strong laws are required to control Chief Lalu Yadav has never apologized for the disrespect he showed towards Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar.' Referring to Bihar's former Deputy CM and Leader of Opposition, Tejashwi Yadav's remarks on Wakf Amendment Act, Bhatia said, "Yesterday, a 9th-grade fail, Tejashwi Yadav, was saying that he would throw the Waqf Amendment Bill, passed by the Indian Parliament, into the trash. How can a state government dismiss a law passed by the Centre?" Taking on the INDIA alliance, the BJP spokesperson said, "If Tejashwi Yadav gives hate speech against the Waqf Amendment Act, then his purpose is to create a division in society. Our government in Bihar talks about development, and they talk about Sharia Law. In Karnataka, they snatched the rights of the backwards and gave them to Muslims," he said. Recalling the lawlessness that prevailed during the "Jungle Raj" of Lalu, he said , "The first rule of Jungle Raj is the destruction of the Constitution and the law, and that is exactly what Tejashwi Yadav is doing while sitting in the opposition." Questioning the RJD's so-called socialist agenda, Bhatia stated, "Those who call themselves 'samajwadi' (socialists) in Bihar are in fact 'namazwadi'. They do not want Babasaheb's Constitution and neither do they respect it. Their sole objective is the imposition of Sharia law in India, and to empower only one community." He took a direct jibe at Tejashwi Yadav, asking, "The so-called master of appeasement, Maulana Tejashwi Yadav, have you ever read the Constitution? Can a state government disregard a law passed by Parliament and signed by the President?" In another sharp remark, Bhatia reminded Tejashwi Yadav about his family's long tenure in power. "Tejashwi Yadav is now demanding 20 months, but the people of Bihar gave more than a decade to the Yadav family. What was the result? The value of human life was lost. Now they talk about youth, but have they ever given an opportunity to anyone outside their family to become CM or even party president?" Bhatia asked. Bhatia also questioned Tejashwi Yadav's stance on the Waqf Amendment Bill, pointing out that the matter is still pending in the Supreme Court. "Why does Tejashwi Yadav have such an anarchist approach? Why is he trying to demean the SC before it has even passed its verdict? Has Tejashwi Yadav become more important than the Supreme Court itself?" UNI AJ AAB GNK 1602
