3M Open: Kurt Kitayama gets off to hot start, holds on at the end to beat Sam Stevens by one
Kurt Kitayama got off to a blazing start and then held on at the end while his two closest competitors melted down at the final hole to win the PGA Tour's 3M Open on July 27 at the TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minn. Kitayama, a 32-year-old native of Chico, Calif., and a former high school point guard, birdied six of his first eight holes and went on to post a 65 and win by one shot over Sam Stevens at 23-under-par 261. Kitayama, whose older brother Daniel caddied for him, had to execute a difficult bunker shot at the last, hitting from a downhill lie to within 17 feet of the hole. He needed only two putts from there to win. Kurt Kitayama jumps on FedEx Cup, money lists The victory sent Kitayama soaring up the PGA Tour FedEx Cup point lists (110th to a projected 57th) and the money list (103rd to 55th with a $1,512,000 first-place check to give him $2,532,696 for the season). His ascent on the FedEx Cup point list was crucial: There is only one more regular-season event left to crack the top 70 and qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs, next week's Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C. The 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational winner, who got into contention with a career-low 60 in the third round, had a three-shot lead over Jake Knapp with four shots to play, which shrank to one over Stevens after a three-putt bogey at the par-3 17th hole and Stevens' making five 3s in a row between Nos. 13 and 17, three birdies and two pars at par-3s. But Stevens (66) parred the par-5 18th hole after hitting three consecutive shots into high rough and finished at 22-under and Knapp (68) hit his second shot into the water fronting the green and made bogey to fall in a tie for third at 20-under with Matt Wallace (64), David Lipsky (64) and Pierceson Coody (67). Kitayama made 20 birdies on the weekend, the most on the PGA Tour since 2003. He bogeyed two of his last three holes in the second round and made the cut by only one shot. He came from a tie for 44th and eight shots off the lead to the victory. Kitayama had a two-shot lead at the turn and after he bogeyed the 11th hole, 10 players were within four shots. But he birdied two of his next three holes, with a 6-foot putt at No. 12 and a 2-footer at No. 14, after hitting his second shot from a fairway bunker. 54-hole leaders Bhatia, Olesen fall out of contention early Akshay Bhatia and Thorbjorn Olesen, the 54-hole leaders, ran into trouble from the beginning and were never a factor. Bhatia bogeyed three of his first four holes and shot 75, finishing in a tie for 25th at 14-under. Olesen bogeyed three of his first eight holes and finished with a 73 to tie for 14th at 16-under. Jake Knapp's girlfriend Makena White recalls how ‘very private' relationship got exposed on PGA Tour
Makena White had no intention of exposing her 'very private' romance with PGA Tour pro and boyfriend Jake Knapp at the 2024 Mexico Open. Life, however, had other plans. White took a stroll down memory lane Monday after the PGA Tour's official X account asked its three million followers to 'share a piece of golf lore about yourself,' prompting Knapp's biggest supporter to peel back the curtain on her personal life. 4 Jake Knapp with girlfriend Makena White during the Cognizant Classic in February 2025. Getty Images 'My (previously very private) relationship was hard launched on national television at the 2024 Mexico Open,' she began on X. 'A year later I got outed playing hooky from work on a Thursday cause that same bf shot 59 & photos of us cellying were all over the internet. '2 years of getting sewered.' 4 Jake Knapp celebrated his first PGA Tour victory with Makena White in February 2024 at the Mexico Open. Getty Images Knapp, 31, earned his first PGA Tour victory as a rookie in February 2024 at the Mexico Open, where White joined him on the course at Vidanta Vallarta for the sweet celebrations that were immortalized on social media. White and Knapp had been dating for six months at the time. She flew in from Canada for the final round after the golfer's unexpected rise to the top of the leaderboard. As Knapp has become a steady contender on tour in the year-and-half since, White has frequently been by his side. A year later, the California native shot a bogey-free 59 in the opening round of the Cognizant Classic at PGA National, joining the exclusive sub-60 club with White in attendance. 4 Jake Knapp finished tied for third at the 3M Open in July 2025. Currently ranked 77th in the world, Knapp is coming off a top-three finish at last weekend's 3M Open, where he tied for third at 20-under par, three strokes behind winner Kurt Kitayama at 23-under. Knapp will be in the field at the upcoming Wyndham Championship, which tees off Thursday. He turned pro in 2016.

Wyndham Championship 2025: Odds, favorites, picks for the Tour's regular-season finale
Rex Hoggard and Ryan Lavner discuss which bubble golfers have their attention at the Wyndham Championship, with hopes of entering the Top 70 in FedExCup points and qualifying for the playoffs. The PGA Tour concludes its regular season this week at the Wyndham Championship, where players are vying for more than just a title. But winning is the name of the game, and betting expert Brad Thomas offers his insight: Jake Knapp, to win (+4000) and top 20 (+180) Jake Knapp's profile probably best suits a course where players can just bomb and gouge their way around. However, it would be foolish not to go back to Knapp after his performance at the 3M Open, where he finished tied for third. Knapp was again a big gainer on the greens, where he picked up 3.3 strokes to the field in putting, marking four straight tournaments where he's gained strokes on the greens. Knapp's sometimes erratic driver shouldn't hurt him at Sedgefield. With only three or four holes where the long-drive reward is higher than the missed-fairway penalty, there will be quite a few holes where clubbing down is necessary. Conservatively, there are around seven holes where less than driver will be beneficial. For Knapp, hitting mini driver or 3-wood is just as long as a driver for many in the field. With a tighter shot dispersion, Knapp should be longer yet still in the short grass. After four straight top-25 finishes and two weeks in contention, Knapp's price provides a ton of value.
