UK foreign secretary praises efforts of Qatar, Egypt and US to end war on Gaza

Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom David Lammy has praised the efforts of Qatar, Egypt, and the United States as mediators to end the war in the Gaza Strip.
In a statement, Lammy said: 'The UK supports the efforts of Qatar, Egypt and the US as mediators and urges all parties to resume talks on a pathway for lasting peace and security.'
He stressed that the humanitarian suffering in Gaza has reached new depths.
He called for the acceleration of the delivery of humanitarian aid in the coming hours and days.
He noted that the Israeli occupation's announcement of a temporary pause to allow the opening of humanitarian corridors and the resumption of airdrops of aid alone cannot alleviate the suffering of those in need.
Lammy stressed the need for a ceasefire that can end the war, for hostages to be released, and for aid to enter Gaza by land unhindered.
He said that land routes serve as the only viable and sustainable means of providing aid into Gaza, adding that these measures must be fully implemented and further barriers on aid removed.
Lammy pointed out that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has already announced plans to work with Jordan to get aid into Gaza and to evacuate children who need critical medical assistance to the UK for treatment.

Slovenia has become the first country in the European Union to ban all weapons trade with Israel over its war on Gaza. The announcement comes two weeks after the Central European nation declared Israeli ministers persona non grata, the state news agency STA reported. The arms embargo was announced by Prime Minister Robert Golob after a government session on Thursday. 'Slovenia is the first European country to ban the import, export and transit of weapons to and from Israel,' the government said in a statement. Early in July, Slovenia – also in an EU first – banned two far-right Israeli ministers from entering the country. It declared both Israelis 'persona non grata', accusing them of inciting 'extreme violence and serious violations of the human rights of Palestinians' with 'their genocidal statements'. In June 2024, Slovenia's parliament passed a decree recognising Palestinian statehood, following in the steps of Ireland, Norway and Spain, in moves partly spurred by condemnation of Israel's bombing of Gaza. Last week, France, the United Kingdom and Canada also announced they may recognise a Palestinian state. Israel decried these announcements, saying they were a way of rewarding Hamas for its October 7, 2023 assault on Israeli territory. Israel has been waging a nearly 22-month war in Gaza that human rights groups and United Nations experts have compared to a genocide. More than 60,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's military campaign, with more at risk of dying from hunger as a result of Israel's blockade of the territory. Several countries, including South Africa, have also brought cases before the International Court of Justice alleging that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. The United States, however, has been an unwavering ally of Israel throughout its war in Gaza, and President Donald Trump has also warned that recognition of Palestinian statehood would serve as a 'reward' to Hamas.

Dozens seeking food in Gaza killed as US envoy visits Israel
Agencies More than 50 Palestinians were killed and 400 others injured while waiting for food near a crossing in northern Gaza on Wednesday, a hospital says, as US special envoy Steve Witkoff visited Israel. Footage showed casualties from the incident near the Zikim crossing being taken on carts to al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City. Gaza's Hamas-run Civil Defence agency said Israeli forces fired at the crowds gathered around aid lorries. The Israeli military said troops fired 'warning shots' but that it was 'not aware of any casualties'. Witkoff met officials in Israel as he tried to salvage stalling ceasefire efforts and alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Israeli officials have threatened that if there is no progress in the coming days on a ceasefire and hostage release deal, then they may take new punitive steps against Hamas. Israeli media reported that those could include annexing parts of Gaza. It also reported that Witkoff would also visit aid distribution sites run by the controversial Israeli- and US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). Shortly after his envoy's arrival in Israel, US President Donald Trump wrote on social media: 'The fastest way to end the Humanitarian Crises in Gaza is for Hamas to SURRENDER AND RELEASE THE HOSTAGES!!!' Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry reported another seven malnutrition-related deaths on Wednesday, bringing the total to since the start of the war to 154. It came a day after the UN-backed global food security experts warned that the 'worst-case scenario of famine' was 'currently playing out' among the 2.1 million population. UN agencies have also said there is man-made, mass starvation in Gaza and blamed Israel, which controls the entry of all supplies to Gaza. But Israel has insisted that there are no restrictions on aid deliveries and that there is 'no starvation'. Despite that, four days ago it implemented measures that it has said are aimed at helping the UN and its partners collect aid from crossings and distribute it within Gaza, including daily 'tactical pauses' in military operations in three areas and the creation of what it calls 'designated humanitarian corridors'. The UN's humanitarian office has said the tactical pauses do not allow for the continuous flow of supplies required to meet the immense needs of the population, and that desperately hungry crowds continue to offload supplies from lorries as they pass through Israeli crossings. The director of al-Shifa hospital, Mohammed Abu Salmiya, told the BBC on Thursday morning that it had received the bodies of 54 people who were killed in the incident in the Zikim area, as well as 412 people who were injured.
