Cam Smith hits 2 of Astros' 5 homers in 13-3 win over Athletics
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Cam Smith hit two of Houston's five home runs and finished with four hits as the Astros routed the Athletics 13-3 on Tuesday night to halt their four-game winning streak.
Jason Alexander, claimed off waivers from the Athletics last month, pitched six shutout innings for Houston before tiring in the seventh. Mauricio Dubon, Christian Walker and Cooper Hummel also homered for the Astros.
Smith and Dubón went back-to-back in the fourth inning.
Smith connected for leadoff shots in the second and fourth. He drove in three runs and scored three times. The 22-year-old rookie has five major league homers — and two multihomer games.
Dubón followed Smith's second home run with his second this season for a 5-0 lead against A's starter JP Sears, who walked the bases loaded in the first before giving up a two-run single to Jake Meyers.
Smith finished off his first four-hit game with an RBI double in the eighth.
Alexander (1-0) threw a season-high 95 pitches in his 12th career start and first since Sept. 18, 2022, with Milwaukee. He allowed three runs — two earned — and three hits.
Walker hit his 10th homer, a two-run shot off Osvaldo Bido, and Isaac Paredes added a two-run single for a 9-0 lead in the fifth.
Dubón singled off T.J. McFarland to begin the seventh and Hummel followed with his first big league homer since Oct. 3, 2022, with Arizona.
Gio Urshela, just reinstated from the injured list, went 2 for 2 off the bench and had an RBI single to drive in the first of three runs in the seventh for the A's.
Sears (5-6) gave up five runs and five hits in 3 1/3 innings. Rookie catcher Willie MacIver pitched a scoreless ninth. Key moment
Houston claimed Alexander off waivers from the Athletics on May 18 and assigned him to Triple-A Sugar Land before calling him up Monday. He allowed 12 earned runs in six innings over four relief appearances for the A's. Key stat

Bay FC opened their first game back from the league's monthlong summer break in a close battle that concluded in a draw. After losing two consecutive games before heading into the break, a 2-2 draw against the Houston Dash showed promise on at least one front for Bay FC: They proved their ability to convert opportunities into goals. Houston didn't equalize until the 74th minute when Kiki van Zanten's right foot made good off of a cross from Avery Patterson to bring the score 1-1. But Bay FC responded — and with immediacy. Just two minutes later, Taylor Huff banged in a shot in very close range off of an assist from Alyssa Malonson to bring the score to 2-1. In the 88th minute, a Houston header off of Sophie Schmidt into the high center of the goal again tied the game. With seven minutes of injury time added to the clock, the two kept the game close. But neither team landed the decisive blow. Bay FC head on the road to play second-worst Chicago Stars FC on Aug. 10.

Sophie Schmidt scored a late equalizer to give the Houston Dash a 2-2 tie against Bay FC on Saturday night in the National Women's Soccer League. In the only other match, the North Carolina Courage was held to a scoreless tie at home to the San Diego Wave. Schmidt rose the highest in a crowded box to head home a corner kick in the 88th minute at PayPal Park. Bay FC (4-6-4) had opened the scoring when Penelope Hocking scored a one-touch finish off Racheal Kundananji's cross in the 16th minute. Houston (3-8-3), now winless in its last six matches, fought back to tie it 1-1 when Kiki Van Zanten scored her first NWSL goal in the 72nd minute. Van Zanten swept home a chipped ball across the box by Avery Patterson. Within two minutes Bay restored its lead when Alyssa Malonson crossed the ball to the back post for Taylor Huff to find a pocket of space in the box and finish in the 74th. Bay FC took twice as many shots (20) as Houston (10). Despite 58% possession, the Dash managed just two shots on target. Courage hold on for 0-0 at home to Wave The North Carolina Courage and the San Diego Wave played to a 0-0 draw. The Courage (5-5-4) is now undefeated in its last five matches at home, while it is third shutout away from home for the Wave this season.
