'Has He Actually Said That?': Buttler, Broad Roast India Star After Victory Claim Backfires
Jos Buttler and Stuart Broad discussed the moment an India star declared that India will definitely chase down 193 on the final day and beat England.
Ahead of Day 5, chasing 193 at Lord's, India were in a tricky spot having lost four wickets for 58. They still needed 135 to win on what was a challenging surface to bat on. However, Washington Sundar was uber confident that his team was capable of chasing it down and take a 2-1 lead in the five-Test series.
'Definitely India winning tomorrow, probably in the first session," said Sundar on Sky Sports.
As it turned out, India fell short of the target by 22 runs to hand England 2-1 lead in the series. And expectedly, the statement is drawing all sorts of reactions ranging from critical to being sympathetic.

While speaking to fast bowling legend Stuart Broad, England wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler said Sundar's confident declaration would have been enough to fire Ben Stokes' men on the final day of the third Test.
'I heard it (Sundar's statement) and then I thought, 'Has he actually said that?' And I thought I wonder if he's just sort of got his words out wrong, as (instead of saying) 'Hopefully we'll win'," Buttler said on BBC.
'But it was proper with incredible confidence. 'Yeah, we're going to win.' It's almost like instead of anyone having to say anything this morning for England, you could have just played that interview and that would have got people so fired up," he added.
Sundar was dismissed for a four-ball duck during the chase with England pacer Jofra Archer giving him a fiery send-off. Broad was though a little sympathetic towards the India allrounder.
'If you've said it, don't get a nought! The thing is, we've all done (such) interviews. Your brain is a bit scrambled, you've had a busy day, lots going on. We've all done one (interview) where we've said something, you walk off you go, 'Did I say that? Oh no, I think I did say that'," Broad said.
Buttler chimed in, 'That's not aged well."
The fourth Test starts from July 23 in Manchester.

This team will make its own history: Gautam Gambhir
Agency: PTI Manchester, Jul 27 (PTI) Gautam Gambhir wants his players to make their own history rather than following anyone from the past including the India head coach himself. And, after a memorable comeback in the Manchester Test, they are moving in that direction. A 188-run stand between captain Shubman Gill and K L Rahul kept India in the fourth Test against England before Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja earned a spirited draw for the visitors with an unbeaten 203-run alliance. Asked whether Gambhir gave a pep talk to the players after day four and made a reference to his match-saving 137 in Napier back in 2009, Gambhir responded in the negative. 'Look, the first thing is that I don't remember any of my knocks, that has become history. I think they should make their own history. Honestly, no one in this team will follow anyone or want to follow. They should make their own history. 'They want to fight for the common man back home. And the important thing is that the way a lot of people had written us off in this Test match, this is the foundation of this team. 'These are characters who are sitting in this dressing room, wanting to fight for the country and they will continue to do that," said the head coach. Managing a draw from the brink of defeat would give India a psychological edge over the hosts in the fifth and final Test in London, felt Gambhir. 'It will. Because when you see, when you're put under the pressure, when you're put under the pump and you end up adding five sessions, I think that's a great character. And anything that you do in these conditions, when you're put under pressure and you come out of those pressure moments, it is always a great feeling. 'And it just ends up giving a lot of confidence in the dressing room as well. And I'm sure, I think going into Oval, I think we will be high on confidence, but we can't take anything for granted," he said. Under new captain Gill, the team is going through a transition but Gambhir doesn't see it that way. Considering the inexperience in the side, the squad has done well especially Gill who racked up his fourth hundred of the series on Sunday. 'Good you used that word transition but I don't see it like that because it is still an Indian team. This is the best 18 that is going to represent. It is only experience and inexperience. 'And that is how we see this. But the most important thing is that these guys got to learn a lot from what they did today. 'Because being under pressure, batting five sessions is never easy on day five of the Test against an attack like England. And then coming out with a draw and only losing four wickets…," he said. Generations will talk about what Pant did for this team: Gautam Gambhir
Manchester, Jul 27 (PTI) Head coach Gautam Gambhir on Sunday said the character and foundation of the current Indian team will be built on the remarkable act of courage from Rishabh Pant, who batted in the first innings of the fourth Test with a broken right foot. Pant added crucial first innings runs for the team despite batting with a fractured foot after missing a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes on day one. He managed to get a half-century, helping India post 358 on day two. Pant was not required to bat in the second innings as Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar guided India to a morale-boosting draw with a century each to keep the series alive. 'Rishabh already, it's been declared that he's out of the series. And one thing I want to say is that the character and the foundation of this team will be built on what Rishabh did for the team and for the country as well," said Gambhir in the post-match media interaction. 'Any amount of praise is not enough for him, especially batting with a broken foot. Not many people have done that in the past. And he had put his hand up, and that is why I say any amount of praise… 'I can sit here and talk about this for hours and hours. I think the generations to come forward will talk about this. And generations coming forward should talk about it, that there is someone who has batted with a broken foot. And it's unfortunate because of the kind of form he was in. 'But again, he's an important member of the Test side. And I hope he recovers quickly and comes back quickly and try and deliver a game for us," said the former India batter. All fast bowlers are fit for final Test, no call taken on Bumrah yet ========================================== Gambhir also gave an important update on the fitness of the fast bowlers who have had to deal with heavy workload and injuries over the course of the five-match series. Having mentioned earlier that Jasprit Bumrah would be playing only three Tests due to workload management, Gambhir said no call is taken yet on his participation at The Oval. For the record, the Manchester Test was Bumrah's third of the tour but with the series still on the line, he might just play in London. 'All the fast bowlers are there. There is no injury scare," Gambhir asserted. That means that Akash Deep has fully recovered from his groin injury and Arshdeep Singh from his hand injury. 'I was not going to risk any..': Ben Stokes reveals reasoning behind early handshake offer to Jadeja and Sundar
England captain Ben Stokes explained why he offered an early draw to Team India in the final session of the Manchester Test, which ended in a draw. read more England captain Ben Stokes offered an early draw to Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar but the batsmen did accept his request. (Screengrab from Sony Liv) A Test match between India and England where drama doesn't unfold is unimaginable. While the Manchester Test did not contribute much to the drama quotient as compared to its predecessors in the series, a controversial episode still sparked right at the end on Day 5. With 15 overs left in the game, England captain Ben Stokes gave up on a potential victory and offered an early handshake to Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, who were both batting in their 80s at that time. Considering they were close to getting to the triple figure mark, the batters did not comply with Stokes' request and kept playing. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD However, Jadeja and Sundar did England and Stokes a favour by quickly attaining the remaining runs. As a result, Sundar taking a single off Harry Brook to complete his maiden Test ton was the final action of the day. Stokes' eagerness to end the match when the Indian batters were close to achieving their milestone did not sit well with Indian cricket fans, and hence, many did not refrain from criticising the England skipper on social media. The entire drama of Ben Stokes himself asking for a draw out of frustration. All that crying when he himself could have declared early yesterday than he did.#ENGvsIND — Prateek (@prateek_295) July 27, 2025 Ben Stokes comes out clean about the handshake incident Following the culmination of the match, Ben Stokes addressed the episode and stated that he did not want to risk an injury to his bowlers as a draw was inevitable at that moment. 'As soon as they got to a point where the draw was inevitable - I was not going to risk any of our bowlers, Just wanted to get through the period without risking proper bowling options.' Gill on Stokes offering a draw in the final session India captain Shubman Gill also made his thoughts known on the handshake incident. According to Gill, Jadeja and Sundar batted brilliantly in the final two sessions of the match and hence deserved a century. 'We thought they (Jadeja and Sundar) batted brilliantly, they were in their 90s, we thought they deserved a century there (about the decision to not shake hands). STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD
