Oman U16 basketball team gears up for Asian qualifiers
The Oman national under-16 basketball team continues its intensive preparations for the upcoming Gulf region qualifiers for the Asian Championship, scheduled to be held in Bahrain from July 7 to 12. The top two teams from this stage will qualify for the final continental tournament, making the upcoming competition highly competitive.
As part of their preparation, the team has entered a closed training camp at the Al Buraimi Sports Complex from May 22 to 24, under the supervision of Tunisian head coach Zouheir al Ayachi and his assistant, Omani coach Ali al Balushi. This camp is considered a crucial step in the team's training plan, aiming to raise the players' technical, physical, and tactical readiness and boost team cohesion ahead of the qualifiers.
The camp's first training session was held on Wednesday night, focusing on developing individual skills such as dribbling, passing, and shooting, in addition to training on quick transitions between offence and defence, team defensive coverage, and improving physical fitness. The team is conducting two training sessions daily — morning and evening — and will conclude the camp with a friendly match against the UAE U-16 national team on Sunday, to be held in the United Arab Emirates. This match is expected to be a vital test of the team's readiness.
Fifteen players are participating in the camp: Saddam bin Ali al Shezawi, Khuzaimah bin Ibrahim al Shibli, Rashid bin Salem al Issai, Mohammed bin Ali al Shezawi, Abdul Rahim bin Abdullah al Roshdi, Elias bin Suleiman al Obaidani, Al Mulhim bin Said al Obaidani, Abdul Samad bin Said al Subhi, Muhannad bin Mansour al Batashi, Nawar bin Abdulaziz al Bahlouli, Adam bin Suleiman al Hinai, Jayid bin Hazem al Kindi, Saif bin Suleiman al Yahyai, Sami bin Faisal al Busaidy and Sultan bin Salem al Sanani. Also present at the camp are Ghassan al Busaidy, Director of National Teams, and Amer al Zaydi, physiotherapist.
In an exclusive statement, Coach Zouheir al Ayachi explained that the Al Buraimi camp is a continuation of earlier short camps held at Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher. Those camps included several important friendly matches, such as three games against the U18 national team and others against the youth teams of Seeb and Al Amerat clubs — both bolstered by U18 players. He added that the team greatly benefited from these matches, as they allowed the coaching staff to evaluate the players' performance in real-game situations and work on both weaknesses and strengths.
The team also recently played a friendly match against the 'Gym Sports' Basketball Academy in Dubai, which ended in a narrow 70–76 defeat. The match was highly competitive, and all players were given an opportunity to participate. The quarter scores were as follows: Q1 (8–16), Q2 (18–19), Q3 (23–23), and Q4 (21–18). Several players stood out during the game, notably Al Mulhim al Obaidani, who scored 19 points, grabbed 17 rebounds, delivered 4 assists, made 3 blocks, and intercepted 4 passes. Adam al Hinai added 17 points and 7 steals, while Saif Al Yahyai scored 16 points, and Rashid al Issai contributed with 8 assists.
Al Ayachi emphasised that such matches are instrumental in improving the team's performance, noting that the technical staff continues to work on enhancing the players' skills and readiness. He expressed confidence in the young squad's potential, seeing them as a promising foundation for the future of Oman basketball.

Masirah Club clinched Chess Clubs championship
MUSCAT, AUGUST 2 Masirah Club Team (A) was crowned champion of the General Chess Clubs Championship after successfully overturning the overall standings in the final rounds, snatching the lead from Salalah Club (A), which had topped the table midway through the competition. Masirah managed to collect 29 points, placing them at the summit of the standings, while Salalah (A) settled for second place. The championship, organised by the Oman Chess Committee, lasted eight days and concluded at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex Hall in Bausher. The tournament, played under the Swiss system of nine rounds with a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30 second increment per move, was filled with excitement and challenges among 100 male and female players representing 20 teams from 13 clubs. All rounds saw strong competition, especially in the eighth and ninth rounds, where leading teams fought to secure decisive points for the top spots. Masirah (A) sealed the title in the final round, while Nakhal Club delivered a major surprise by taking third place, surpassing teams that had been in the lead. At the awarding ceremony, Ahmed bin Darwish al Balushi, Chairman of the Oman Chess Committee, honoured the winning clubs. Masirah (A) received the gold medal, the championship cup, and a cash prize after scoring 29 points. Salalah (A) took the silver medal and a cash prize with 25 points, while Nakhal (A) finished third with the bronze medal and a cash prize, scoring 22.5 points on tiebreak. Masirah (B) placed fourth, while Salalah (B) came fifth. Ahmed al Balushi expressed his satisfaction with the technical level of the tournament, saying "throughout the championship days, we witnessed a high level of competition that reflects the significant development of the game within the Sultanate of Oman. What distinguishes this edition is the balance of power among the clubs, as positions changed right up to the final round. This is clear evidence of the closeness in technical levels." He added "the committee is working under a clear strategy to develop the game. Through these tournaments, we aim to discover talents and refine them through competition and exposure, in preparation for integrating outstanding players into the national team to represent the Sultanate of Oman in international championships. Our goal is to see Omani players achieve international titles and enhance the Sultanate of Oman's global standing in chess." He concluded by saying "we thank all clubs and players for their commitment and sportsmanship, and we also appreciate the support of partner entities that contributed to the championship's success. We look forward to future tournaments with higher levels of performance and wider participation." The Oman Chess Committee affirmed that the championship aims to create a truly competitive environment among clubs and measure players' technical levels, noting that these competitions, over their past editions, have contributed to developing players' abilities, particularly in the general category, which has been reflected in achieving advanced results in international rankings.

MUSCAT, AUGUST 1 Oman's trailblazing desert marathon race has opened registration for its 2026 edition. The organisers Omania Adventure are gearing up to host the desert race in the golden sands of the Wilayat of Bidiyah, Al Sharqiyah North Governorate, where endless dunes meet the horizon. The 11th Oman Desert Marathon (ODM) is set to take place from January 10 to 14, 2026. Over the years, the ultra-marathon has become far more than just a running competition. Positioned as a unique journey to discover remote, untouched sands and the highest dunes of the Omani Desert, the event blends technical racing, cultural immersion, alongside Omani hospitality across a desert-to-sea route. Registration is now open for multiple distances including marathon (42 km), half marathon (21 km), 10 km, 5 km and kids race. The announcement follows the race's prominent feature in the May issue of Runners World Germany, one of Europe's most prestigious running publications. 'Pol's infectious enthusiasm and authentic storytelling reminded us exactly why we created ODM — to push boundaries, test limits and emerge stronger', said event organisers. Oman to host 36th Arab TT Club Championship in Muscat
MUSCAT, AUGUST 1 The Oman Table Tennis Association (OTTA) is gearing up to host the 36th edition of the Arab Table Tennis Club Championship in Muscat staring from August 30 to September 4. The prestigious tournament will take place at the main hall of Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher and is expected to witness the participation of elite table tennis clubs from across the Arab countries. This highly anticipated event comes eight years after Oman's successful hosting of the Arab Table Tennis Championship for national teams in 2017 and reflects OTTA's growing reputation as a reliable and experienced organiser of regional and international table tennis events. The tournament is held under the umbrella of the Arab Table Tennis Federation (ATTF) and features some of the top-ranked clubs in the region. The ATTF has officially invited all its member federations and associations to nominate their top clubs to participate in the tournament. Each country may send up to three clubs in the men's and three in the women's categories. Representing Oman in this championship will be Salalah Club, Ibri Club and Seeb Club, who earned their spots by finishing as the top three teams in last season's national league competition. According to the ATTF, the deadline for club registrations is August 15 and participating teams will be permitted to include one foreign professional player provided they meet specific criteria, including the submission of an international transfer certificate and an official registration letter from the club. All matches will adhere to the regulations set by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). The tournament will be contested under the modern Cup Swiss format, which ensure competitive matchups and fair opportunities for all teams. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams in both the men's and women's categories, including trophies, medals and certificates of recognition. The officiating team will include international referees, led by Zaki Khalid from Egypt as the chief referee and Hashim al Salmi from Oman as his assistant, alongside other top-ranked Arab and Omani referees. Mohammed al Jassasi, OTTA Board Member and Tournament Director, expressed pride in hosting the championship. ' This tournament will act as an ideal opportunity for our local clubs to gain valuable experience and exposure by competing with high-ranking Arab clubs that feature top ranking and skilled players.
