Congress highlights background to Sindoor debate, Trump's ceasefire claims

Ahead of a discussion in Parliament on Operation Sindoor, the Congress on Sunday recapitulated the events forming the backdrop to the debate, prominent among them US President Donald claiming "26 times" since May 10 that he stopped Operation Sindoor by threatening to cut off trade with India.
The opposition party said the debate was a long time coming, but "better late than never." "The Lok Sabha is scheduled to begin a 16-hour debate on Pahalgam-Op Sindoor tomorrow and the Rajya Sabha is set to do so the day after tomorrow. The INC had been demanding a special two-day session of Parliament immediately after Operation Sindoor was abruptly halted. That demand was ignored. Nevertheless, better late than never," party leader Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X.
The Pahalgam terror attack took place on April 22, but the terrorists directly responsible have still not been brought to justice, the party's general secretary, in-charge, communications, said.
Reportedly, they were involved in earlier terror attacks in Poonch (December 2023) and Gangagir and Gulmarg (October 2024), Ramesh said.
At the request of the Congress, an all-party meeting was held and chaired, not by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as demanded, but by the Defence Minister on April 24, where questions on intelligence lapses were raised, he said.
On May 30, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan made significant revelations on tactical mistakes in the first two days of Operation Sindoor, he said. These revelations were made in Singapore.
"On June 29, 2025, the Indian Defence Attache in Indonesia, Group Captain Shiv Kumar, said that political decisions hampered military operations during Operation Sindoor and also appeared to have indicated the extent of our aircraft losses," he said.
On July 4, Deputy Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Rahul R Singh revealed that India contended with and battled against China during Operation Sindoor, both in terms of hardware and software, Ramesh said, calling it a "completely new scenario." "On July 14, 2025, the LG of J&K Manoj Sinha publicly admitted that the Pahalgam terror attacks were undoubtedly a security failure," he said.
Ramesh also highlighted that since May 10, Trump has claimed "26 times" that he stopped Operation Sindoor by threatening to cut off trade with India.
Trump also claimed that five fighter jets may have been shot down, the Congress leader pointed out.
"He (Trump) has hosted the Pakistan Army Chief for lunch which has never been done before. The US Central Command Chief, Gen. Michael Kurilla, had called Pakistan a phenomenal partner in counter-terrorism operations. And just the day before yesterday the US Secretary lauded Pakistan in his meeting with its Deputy PM," Ramesh said.
He said the outlandish claims made by sections of the Indian media during Operation Sindoor, "with instigation by the PM's media managers," led to a mockery of whatever serious narrative was sought to be built up.
The narrative had more takers at home than in countries where an outreach took place, Ramesh said.
Opposition parties have agreed to a special discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor on Monday in Lok Sabha and the next day in Rajya Sabha.
The debate is hoped to bring normalcy to Parliament after a virtual washout of the first week's proceedings.

Revanna gets lifer in rape case

Bengaluru: A Special Court here on Saturday sentenced to life imprisonment, former MP and suspended JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna in a rape case. The Special Court for MPs/MLAs Judge Santosh Gajanan Bhat also imposed a total fine of Rs 10 lakh on the accused. The court had on Friday convicted the 34-year-old in one of the four sexual abuse and rape cases registered against him and reserved the sentencing for Saturday. The case pertains to a 48-year-old woman who was working as a help at the family's Gannikada farmhouse in Hassan district's Holenarasipura. She was allegedly raped twice -- at Hassan farm house and Bengaluru residence-- in 2021 and the act recorded by the accused on his mobile phone. Earlier in the day, while the prosecution sought life sentence for Revanna, the 34 year-old sought leniency, claiming he did nothing wrong and that his only mistake was his 'fast' growth in politics. He broke down in court as he appealed to the judge for a lesser punishment. He told the court that he is a BE Mechanical graduate, and has always passed on merit. "...they say that I have raped multiple women, but none of the women have come out voluntarily to complain, they came six days prior to election (Lok Sabha polls last year)...the prosecution side brought them purposefully and made them give a complaint," Prajwal told the court.

Like Lee Kuan Yew, Chandrababu Naidu epitomises visionary leadership

The trip proved instrumental in reigniting interest among international industrial giants to set up operations in the state. The new industrial policies introduced by Naidu's government are already instilling confidence in investors, both domestic and foreign. It is truly inspiring to witness the remarkable similarities between Lee Kuan Yew, the founding father and visionary architect of modern Singapore, and N. Chandrababu Naidu, who has been rebuilding Andhra Pradesh from the ground after the state's painful bifurcation. Both leaders have demonstrated visionary thinking, indomitable will, and relentless drive to steer their respective regions toward prosperity defying all odds. During Naidu's recent visit to Singapore for the World Cities Summit, several Singaporean dignitaries, including then Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, drew striking parallels between the leadership styles of Lee Kuan Yew and Naidu. Lee Kuan Yew transformed Singapore from a struggling third-world country into a first-world economic powerhouse within a few decades. Likewise, Naidu has taken on the herculean task of rebuilding the residual Andhra Pradesh, which was left bleeding after bifurcation, and is now steadily propelling toward becoming a leading state in India. The visionary governance, innovative reforms, and futuristic planning under Naidu's leadership during 2014–2019 were widely admired. The people of Singapore were already aware of his transformative governance. Both Lee and Naidu are known for setting ambitious goals and pursuing them with strategic acumen. Their perseverance and purpose-driven governance saved their respective regions from decline and enabled them to thrive. Naidu's four-day visit to Singapore, focused on attracting investments to Andhra Pradesh, which is testament to his proactive approach. Upon arrival, Telugu families in Singapore welcomed him and Minister Nara Lokesh with traditional fervour and treated them to classical Kuchipudi and kolatam renditions. Around 2,500 members of the Telugu diaspora gathered to meet the Chief Minister, who graciously interacted with every individual and posed for photographs for posterity. Naidu and Lokesh held back-to-back meetings with representatives of various global organizations, explaining the state's positive investment climate and inviting them to become stakeholders in the State's development. As part of an overwhelming 26 official engagements, they visited several key projects and studied the best practices for implementation back home. The Indian High Commissioner to Singapore, Shilpak Ambule, extended full support to the delegation. Notably, the Chief Minister engaged in critical discussions with leaders of major companies such as Temasek Holdings, CapitaLand Investment (India), Mandai Wildlife Group, and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation. These conversations centred on industrial development, port-led infrastructure and logistics. Naidu presented Andhra Pradesh's economic potential through a detailed PP presentation highlighting the state's resources, strategic location, and pro-industry policies. As a result of Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy government's chaotic and investor-unfriendly policies, Andhra Pradesh's brand image had taken a severe beating. Naidu and Lokesh's tireless efforts during this visit were specifically aimed at restoring confidence among global investors. The trip proved instrumental in reigniting interest among international industrial giants to set up operations in the state. The new industrial policies introduced by Naidu's government are already instilling confidence in investors, both domestic and foreign. Andhra Pradesh is now poised to become a prime investment destination. With a growth target of over 15 per cent, the State's focus on ease of doing business and proactive governance is expected to trigger a fresh wave of industrialisation. The state government is working toward creating 20 lakh jobs within five years, fulfilling its electoral promise and laying golden paths for the youth. The Chief Minister also laid out region-specific industrial and trade development plans and emphasised the strategic importance of Andhra Pradesh's vast 974-km coastline. Six ports are operational, and four more are in the pipeline. Integrated development plans involving road, rail, and inland water transport are being pursued to foster port-based industries. Naidu assured the CEOs and investors he met that the government would provide all necessary infrastructure. 'Now is the right time to invest in Andhra Pradesh,' he reiterated. His vision is to transform Andhra Pradesh into a logistics hub along the East Coast, leveraging its long coastline and deep-water ports. Naidu's efforts to restore the state's credibility, rekindle ties with Singapore, and chart a new course for Andhra Pradesh's economic revival are commendable. As the state gears up to host the Partnership Summit 2025 in Visakhapatnam on November 14–15, the focus will be on reimagining the state's industrial landscape. The entire nation is now watching Andhra Pradesh with renewed interest. After five years of stagnation, the state is poised to rise again Phoenix-like. The government is exploring every possible avenue to ensure financial empowerment and economic resurgence. Indeed, it is a matter of great pride that a visionary like Chandrababu Naidu is drawing comparisons with none other than Lee Kuan Yew. Both leaders—through their foresight, discipline, and determination—have proven how transformational leadership can change and rewrite a region's destiny. Will expose BRS, BJP conspiracy against Telangana: Bhatti

Kollapur (Nagarkurnool): Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka issued a strong warning against the conspiracies being hatched against Telangana in the name of Banakacherla and Polavaram projects. He alleged that BRS, BJP, and TDP have colluded and conspired to merge seven mandals of Khammam district into Andhra Pradesh, which was attempted through an ordinance. During the public meeting held in Kollapur constituency on the occasion of foundation stone laying for new substations, distribution of ration cards, and Indiramma housing pattas on Saturday, the Deputy Chief Minister questioned the silence of the BRS government for ten years, saying their inaction brought Banakacherla to the forefront. He said it was only when Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy visited Delhi that the Banakacherla proposal was halted. Bhatti said that AP Minister Lokesh's statements about Telangana wasting water and building Banakacherla with such water are misleading. He clarified that water flowing downstream is only because Telangana's upstream projects were left incomplete, and only after completing all its rights and needs will Telangana allow any further discussion on Banakacherla. 'The BRS came to power promising water, funds, and jobs. But in ten years, the previous government failed to complete any major projects on Godavari or Krishna rivers. It was Congress governments that initiated and completed projects like Jurala, Nettempadu, Koilsagar, Kalwakurthy, Srisailam, and Nagarjunasagar on the Krishna river,' he said. Bhatti recalled how the Congress had proposed the Pranahita-Chevella project at 152m height to benefit upland areas. Instead, former chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao went for the Kaleshwaram project at only 100m height, which ultimately collapsed despite spending ₹1.2 lakh crores, whereas Pranahita-Chevella could have been completed for Rs 38,000 crore. He accused the previous BRS government of redesigning projects only to loot the state treasury, and not delivering even a single acre of irrigation. The Deputy Chief Minister said the state witnessed fear and suppression, with dissenting voices silenced and people arrested arbitrarily during BRS rule. 'Congress has brought back democracy in Telangana and is working for the people,' he added.
