Spouse of active-duty Coast Guard service member detained by immigration agents on base
The Coast Guardsman and spouse were at the government housing area on the base on April 24 when agents of Homeland Security Investigations, a part of Immigration and Custom Enforcement or ICE. The family was in the process of moving onto the base in Florida.
Reports of the arrest were posted to social media, including military subreddits on Reddit. The Coast Guard confirmed to Task & Purpose that the spouse of an active-duty member of the Coast Guard was taken into custody.
'The Coast Guard is aware of a law enforcement action by federal authorities involving the spouse of a Coast Guard service member,' a Coast Guard spokesman told Task & Purpose on Saturday. 'The spouse is not a member of the Coast Guard and was detained by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) pursuant to a lawful removal order. The Coast Guard works closely with HSI and others to enforce federal laws, including on immigration.'
The Associated Press, citing an unnamed official familiar with the incident, reported additional details. The couple was moving into on-base housing at the naval base and the wife's name was flagged while undergoing a screening to get a pass to go onto the base. Per the official, the woman's work visa expired in 2017 and was later marked for removal from the country. She and the Coast Guardsman got married earlier this year. The Associated Press reports that base security as well as Naval Criminal Investigative Service were contacted after the woman's information was flagged. They went to the couple's home on base, along with HSI agents, who detained her.
The Coast Guard is a part of the Department of Homeland Security.
The Coast Guard member serves aboard the cutter the USCGC Mohawk, which is based out of Key West, in Coast Guard District 7. The cutter had been at port since mid-March. Task & Purpose reached out to ICE and the specific Coast Guard district for more information but as of press time has not heard back.
It is not clear what will happen to the wife next or if she is still currently being detained by immigration agents.

13 arrested in Southern California prostitution bust
Thirteen people were arrested during a prostitution bust in Riverside County. The operation targeted online prostitution and the suspects who sought the illicit services. Those victimized by commercial sexual exploitation frequently have long histories of emotional, physical, and/or sexual abuse or trauma in their backgrounds.' Scuba diver dies exploring shipwrecks 150-miles off Cape Cod, officials say
Joseph Mazraani, 48, of New Millstone Township, had traveled aboard his 45-foot boat 'Tenacious' with a group of divers, Bristol District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III's office said in a statement. At some point during the dive on Tuesday, Mazraani experienced a 'possible medical emergency,' the statement said. Group members pulled him from the water and attempted lifesaving measures but were unsuccessful, officials said. The Coast Guard and New Bedford police were notified. The vessel began its return to port, arriving at Fleet Marina in New Bedford at 6:00 a.m., officials said. ‘Heartbroken beyond words.' Family of girl killed in sailboat crash speaks out
The family of 13-year-old Erin Ko, who was killed when a barge slammed into a sailboat of summer campers in Biscayne Bay on Monday, thanked the community for its support during what they call an 'unimaginably difficult time.' Erin was among five girls and a camp counselor aboard a 17-foot Hobie Getaway, part of a Miami Yacht Club summer camp program teaching children to sail, when it was hit by a 60-foot barge being pushed by a tugboat. The impact of the crash, which happened around 11 a.m. Monday, caused the boat to capsize. The accident also claimed the life of 7-year-old Mila Yankelevich, the granddaughter of well-known Argentine television producers Cris Morena and Gustavo Yankelevich. Mila and her parents, also prominent in the arts, had moved to South Florida. They shared a selection of photos commemorating Erin's life and said they hope, in time, to speak more about who she was and the joy she brought to those around her. Erin attended Colegio San Pedro Nolasco de Vitacura in a province of Santiago until her family moved to South Florida in December. In a statement released Wednesday, the school remembered Erin as a kind, gifted student who 'left an indelible mark' on their community. Erin excelled academically, especially in math, the school noted. She was on the volleyball team and participated in trapeze. 'Her friendliness and personality allowed her to interact with students at different levels, whether through her participation in extracurricular activities or through the family ties that united her with classmates from other classes,' the school wrote. A memorial Mass was held Thursday in Chile, where Erin's former classmates and relatives gathered to remember her. In a video shared by the school, students formed a circle and released white balloons in her honor. 'While she was here, she was a light for us, for our school, ' the Chilean school's elementary school director Francisca Aburto told Miami Herald news partner CBS Miami. 'Erin left a mark that's indelible. So that's very important for us to pass that on. 'For me, I also taught Erin before taking over as principal. I was her teacher in fifth grade, and in sixth grade. It was a wonderful experience…' Erin also had attended Nautilus Middle School in Miami Beach, Local 10 reported. The Miami-Dade school district confirmed Friday she was a student at one of its schools. The collision occurred near Hibiscus and Monument Islands off Miami Beach. Two other campers, ages 8 and 11, were critically injured and rushed to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, officials say. The 19-year-old camp counselor and a 12-year-old girl were treated at the scene.
