India ranks among top world's most equal societies, says World Bank report: What does it mean?

Minta day ago
New Delhi [India], July 5 (ANI): India has emerged as one of the most equal societies globally, with a Gini Index of 25.5, according to the latest data from the World Bank.
Ranking fourth worldwide in income equality, India now stands just behind the Slovak Republic, Slovenia, and Belarus.
"It reflects how India's economic progress is being shared more evenly across its population. Behind this success is a consistent policy focus on reducing poverty, expanding financial access, and delivering welfare support directly to those who need it most," a release from the Social Welfare said.
The Gini Index, a key measure of income distribution where 0 represents perfect equality and 100 denotes maximum inequality, places India ahead of advanced economies, including China (35.7), the United States (41.8), and all G7 and G20 countries. India's score has improved from 28.8 in 2011, reflecting steady progress in equitable growth.
The country's strong performance in reducing poverty has played a central role in achieving greater equality. The World Bank's Spring 2025 Poverty and Equity Brief reports that 171 million Indians were lifted out of extreme poverty between 2011 and 2023. The poverty rate fell sharply from 16.2 per cent to just 2.3 per cent during this period, based on the USD 2.15 per day global poverty threshold.
The release also highlights upon, government initiatives have underpinned this transformation. Flagship programs like PM Jan Dhan Yojana have expanded financial inclusion, with over 55 crore bank accounts. Aadhaar, India's digital ID system, now covers more than 142 crore individuals, streamlining welfare delivery through Direct Benefit Transfers, which saved ₹ 3.48 lakh crore by March 2023.
Healthcare equity has also improved through Ayushman Bharat, which provides ₹ 5 lakh health coverage to families and has issued over 41 crore cards. The Stand-Up India scheme supports SC/ST and women entrepreneurs, while the PM Vishwakarma Yojana backs artisans with loans and training. PMGKAY, India's food security scheme, has benefited over 80 crore citizens, it added. (ANI)

Indians can now get UAE's Golden Visa without trade license, property purchase

Representative Image The United Arab Emirates government has started a new type of Golden Visa, which will be based on nomination, albeit with some conditions, unlike the current practice of investing large amounts in either property or business here. Until now, one of the ways to get Dubai's Golden Visa from India was to invest in property whose value should be at least AED Two Million (Rs 4.66 crore), or invest a large amount in business in the country. Under the "new nomination-based visa policy," Indians can now enjoy the UAE's Golden Visa for life by paying a fee of AED 1,00,000 (INR around 23.30 lakh), beneficiaries and people involved in the process have told PTI. Over 5,000 Indians will apply for this nomination-based visa in three months, they said. India and Bangladesh have been selected for the first phase of testing this visa, and a consultancy named Rayad Group has been chosen to test the initial form of the nomination-based golden visa in India. Rayad Kamal Ayub, Managing Director of Rayad Group, said this is a golden opportunity for Indians to get the UAE's Golden Visa. Whenever an applicant applies for this Golden Visa, we will first check their background, which will include anti-money laundering and criminal record checks, as well as their social media," said Rayad Kamal. The background check will also show if and how the applicant can benefit the UAE's market and business activities in any other way such as culture, finance, trade, science, Start Up, professional services, etc. "After this, RayadGroup will send the application to the government, which will make the final decision on the nomination-based Golden Visa," he added. Applicants seeking the UAE Golden Visa under the nomination category may obtain pre-approval from their home country without the need to visit Dubai. "Applications can be submitted through One VASCO centres (visa concierge service company) in India and Bangladesh, our registered offices, our online portal, or our dedicated call centre," he added. After getting the Golden Visa, one gets the freedom to bring his or her family members to Dubai. "You can also keep servants and drivers based on this visa. You can do any business or professional work here," Rayad Kamal said, adding, the property-based Golden Visa ends in case of property sale or division, but the nomination-based visa will remain forever. The UAE government's initiative and India's selection as the first country for this visa reflect the strong business, cultural, and geopolitical relations between India and the UAE, which have become stronger after the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the two countries, effective May 2022. The Golden Visa nomination process is an agreement between the UAE and its (Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement) CEPA signatory/partner countries. This is a pilot project which has started with India and Bangladesh and will soon include China and other CEPA countries. RayadGroup and VFS have been chosen to vet the applicants and then forward them to the UAE authorities. Big news for Indians! UAE launches nomination-based Golden Visa for lifetime residency – here's all you need to know

UAE Golden Visa: The UAE has introduced nomination-based Golden Visa, which will enable eligible Indians to receive lifetime residency for a fixed fee. As per the 'new nomination-based visa policy,' Indians can get the UAE's Golden Visa for life by paying a fee of AED 1,00,000 (around ₹ 23.30 lakh), reported news wire PTI citing beneficiaries and people involved in the process. Until the latest policy, Indians were required to invest in property worth at least AED Two Million ( ₹ 4.66 crore), or invest a large amount in a business in the Gulf nation, to access the Golden Visa. As per officials, India and Bangladesh have been selected for the first phase of testing of the nomination based Golden Visa. For every Golden Visa application, a thorough background check will be carried out — including screening for criminal records, anti-money laundering compliance, and even a review of the applicant's social media presence, said Rayad Kamal Ayub, Managing Director of Rayad Group, the firm selected to pilot the nomination-based Golden Visa in India. The evaluation will also assess how the applicant might contribute to the UAE's economy or society — whether through culture, finance, trade, science, startups, or professional services, said the consultancy's MD. Following the checks, the applications will be sent to the UAE government, which "will make the final decision on the nomination-based Golden Visa,' PTI quoted Kamal as saying. Indians seeking to apply for the nomination-based Golden Visa can file their applications through One VASCO centres (visa concierge service company) in India and Bangladesh, Rayad Group's registered offices and the online portal, said the consultancy firm's MD. Applicants seeking the UAE Golden Visa under the nomination category may obtain pre-approval from their home country without the need to visit Dubai. As per Kamal, those with the nomination-based golden visa get to bring their family members to Dubai. The visa also enables one to start or run a business, or take up any professional job in the UAE without a separate work permit. Unlike the property-based Golden Visa which ends in case of property sale or division, the nomination-based visa permits lifetime residency in the nation. The Golden Visa nomination process is an agreement between the UAE and its (Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement) CEPA signatory/partner countries. This is a pilot project which has started with India and Bangladesh and will soon include China and other CEPA countries, reported PTI. (with inputs from agencies)

UAE rolls out new golden visa: Lifetime residency at Rs 23 lakh, India among first to benefit

NEW DELHI: In a major shift from its traditional investment-based residency model, the United Arab Emirates has introduced a new nomination-based Golden Visa, offering eligible Indians lifetime residency in the country by paying a one-time fee of AED 1,00,000 (approximately Rs 23.3 lakh), without the need to invest in property or business. Until now, Indian nationals were eligible for the UAE's coveted Golden Visa primarily through high-value investments, including a minimum AED 2 million (Rs 4.66 crore) in property. But under this new system, applicants can be nominated and approved based on their professional background, societal contributions, or potential benefits to UAE's sectors such as culture, trade, science, startups, or finance. The pilot phase of the initiative has been launched for India and Bangladesh, with over 5,000 Indian applicants expected in the first three months, according to officials involved in the process. Rayad Group, the consultancy firm selected to pilot the nomination-based Golden Visa in India, is leading the process in partnership with VFS and One Vasco centres across India and Bangladesh. Applications can also be submitted through the group's online portal and call centre. "This is a golden opportunity for Indians," said Rayad Kamal Ayub, Managing Director of Rayad Group. He explained that the vetting process includes anti-money laundering checks, criminal background verification, and social media screening. Approved visa holders can bring family members, employ staff, and engage in business or professional activities. Unlike property-based visas, which lapse upon property sale, the nomination-based Golden Visa is permanent. This initiative reflects the UAE's growing economic and strategic ties with India following the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) signed in 2022. The program is expected to expand to other CEPA partner countries, including China, in later phases. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays .
