A key focus of this initiative is to address critical challenges affecting these regions.
In an exclusive interview with TOI on Wednesday, CSIR-NEERI director Dr S Venkata Mohan, an Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellow, emphasized the network's goal of tackling region-specific environmental issues. "The Global South faces unique challenges, and this platform will amplify our voice to address them collaboratively," he said.
The network aims to create a charter, facilitating annual engagements across member countries to develop tailored solutions.
"India represents a significant population, and our contributions will carry substantial weight globally," Dr Venkata Mohan added.
NEERI also hosts a regional centre for the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), in partnership with the ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEFCC).
The Stockholm Convention targets chemicals that persist in the environment, spread globally, and accumulate in fatty tissues, posing risks to human health and ecosystems. "We are developing methods to monitor and phase out particulate organic carbon (POC) and other POPs," Dr Venkata Mohan said, highlighting NEERI's role as a recognized regional centre.
The Global South Network, an independent initiative, will strengthen NEERI's leadership in environmental research, fostering sustainable development across member nations.

Also, CSIR-NEERI is in discussion to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in collaboration with IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute to advance water and wastewater treatment and energy recovery technologies. "A recent Sweden delegation formalized to drive Indo-Swedish sustainability goals," he said. The CoE, to be established at NEERI's Nagpur campus, will serve as a hub for innovative water management solutions, aligning with global circular economy practices.
Last year, the Swedish Innovation Agency Vinnova commissioned IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute to conduct a pre-feasibility study for establishing a Sweden-India Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Sustainable Cities. The study was led by Rupali Deshmukh (Karangale), a native of Nagpur now based in Sweden, who serves as Country Manager for India and CEO of IVL India. IVL has now been tasked with hammering out a detailed feasibility study focusing on water, wastewater, sludge, and energy.

India-US trade deal progressing as per terms of reference, says govt official

The Indo-US trade deal is progressing as per the terms of reference decided between the two countries, commerce ministry officials said on Tuesday. Giving an update on the negotiations, the ministry said that a team of India negotiators is in the US for carrying out the fifth round of negotiations on the bilateral trade agreement. 'The first round of negotiations took place when the US team visited India last week of March. We finalized terms of negotiations thereafter, and the negotiations have been going thereafter. Two rounds of discussions were held when India visited the US in April and May. Then in June, again, the United States team came to India, and we had the fourth round of discussions and negotiations on the bilateral trade agreement,' said chief negotiator and commerce secretary-designate Rajesh Agarwal on Tuesday. Agarwal refused to speak on any specific details of the negotiations between the two countries. India is hoping to close a limited trade deal by 1 August 2025, when the extended deadline for implementation of reciprocal tariff ends. The US has already announced the revised reciprocal tariff rates for two dozen countries. The revised rates are in the 25-40% range. New tariff for India has not been announced yet. The trade data released by the commerce ministry on Tuesday showed that despite the 10% reciprocal tariff imposed by the US, India's exports to the US has jumped by a healthy 22% in April-June quarter, while imports from the country have increased by 12% during the same period.

Hyderabad Investors Pour Rs 310 Cr into Tata Arbitrage Fund in 3 months as Market Volatility Shifts Strategy

Arbitrage Funds are gaining traction as an investment option amid equity market volatility, particularly for those seeking low risk investment opportunity. By capitalising on price differences between the cash and futures markets, these funds seek to perform better in turbulent conditions, giving fund managers greater scope for intra-month trading opportunities. "In the current environment, arbitrage funds are uniquely positioned to capture the potential benefits of market volatility while shielding investors from direct equity risks. Elevated roll spreads and sustained volatility have enabled arbitrage funds to deliver reasonable returns, even as traditional income avenues have become less attractive. For investors seeking equity tax returns, arbitrage funds offer a suitable proposition," said Sailesh Jain, Fund Manager, Tata Asset Management. According to data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), arbitrage funds attracted Rs 43,077 crore between April and June 2025, surpassing inflows into other hybrid and equity categories. This surge underscores investor preference for instruments that can deliver relatively reasonable returns while minimising equity risk during periods of heightened uncertainty. However, profit is not guaranteed. Reflecting the broader industry trend, the Tata Arbitrage Fund too, saw inflows of Rs 5,217 crore between April and June 2025, with Rs 310 crore coming from Hyderabad. The fund had assets under management of Rs 14,274 crore as of June 30, 2025. The environment is especially conducive for arbitrage strategies, as elevated volatility and strong roll spreads have opened potential return opportunities. The Reserve Bank of India's recent easing measures—cutting the repo rate by 50 basis points and the Cash Reserve Ratio by 100 basis points—has further boosted the appeal of arbitrage funds over traditional fixed income avenues. The upcoming corporate earnings and a positive monsoon outlook are also expected to lift market sentiment. As global and domestic uncertainties continue to cloud market outlook, arbitrage funds are a choice for investors to help them navigate choppy waters. With interest rates on a downward trend and savings account returns declining, traditional fixed-income options have become relatively less attractive in terms of returns. At the same time, factors such as the anticipated Indo-US trade deal, tariff negotiations, and ongoing geopolitical tensions are keeping the market volatility elevated. Although the US dollar index remains subdued for now, any spike in global risk aversion may trigger fresh market swings. In this backdrop, arbitrage funds seek to offer investors a low-risk way to capitalise on volatility without direct equity exposure.
