Gary Lineker claims BBC exit ‘case of quit or be quitted' after sharing pro-Gaza video

Gary Lineker left the BBC after sharing a post about Zionism, which featured a depiction of a rat - historically an antisemitic insult - which he apologised for
Gary Lineker has claimed his departure from the BBC was a case of 'quit or be quitted'. The former Match Of The Day presenter was asked if his departure from the corporation was 'of his own volition, or a case of quit or be quitted?' to which he replied 'the latter', during an interview with The New World, formerly known as The New European.

The 64-year-old left the BBC early following a post about Zionism which featured a depiction of a rat, historically an antisemitic insult, which he apologised for, saying he stands 'against all forms of racism'.

The presenter will no longer front BBC coverage of the 2026 World Cup or the FA Cup next season as had been intended, with his last episode of Match Of The Day coming on May 25.

Speaking about his departure, Lineker said: 'That's what changed after that. I made a mistake and I immediately took it down and apologised, which I thought should have been enough.'
He went on to say that he believed he had complied with the BBC's impartiality rules as he had looked at the war in Gaza 'without a vested interest'.

Lineker added: 'I've got no skin in the game. I'm not Muslim, I'm not Palestinian, I'm not Israeli, I'm not Jewish. I come from a place of complete impartiality. And then it becomes about truth.
'People talked about me being antisemitic. I'm not anti-any group of people. Any race, any colour. But I am anti the killing of children.'
The former England striker went on to say he did not blame director-general Tim Davie for his exit, adding: 'Tim Davie I know and I get on well with. I know how difficult it is for him with what's going on.

'Do I dislike people at the BBC? Not the people that I know.'
BBC boss speaks out
At the time of Lineker's departure, Davie said in a statement that the pair 'agreed he will step back from further presenting after this season', after the former presenter 'acknowledged the mistake he made'.
Davie added: 'Gary has been a defining voice in football coverage for the BBC for over two decades. His passion and knowledge have shaped our sports journalism and earned him the respect of sports fans across the UK and beyond. We want to thank him for the contribution he has made.'

In his own statement, Lineker said that 'stepping back now feels like the responsible course of action'.
The ex-Barcelona player went on to say in The New World interview that he has toned down his use of social media following the incident.
He explained: 'Social media's changed a lot. People say to me 'when did you start having a view on things?', and I say 'well I've always had a view but social media gave me the platform'.

'Perhaps I wish it hadn't. I've come off X completely. I only use it to promote a podcast now. It's just become horrible. Nasty.'
Lineker also runs Goalhanger Podcasts which produces podcasts such as The Rest Is Football, The Rest Is History, The Rest Is Politics, and The Rest Is Entertainment, and the Leicester-born star revealed in the interview that his company would soon produce a science podcast.
The Rest Is Football podcast, which Lineker presents alongside former footballers Micah Richards and Alan Shearer, moved from the BBC to British internet sports streaming platform DAZN following Lineker's BBC exit.

MasterChef contestant edited out of 'uncomfortable' new series takes jab at hosts

MasterChef contestant Sarah Shafi who has been edited out of the programme after objecting to it airing over allegations against Gregg Wallace and John Torode has spoken out on GMB A contestant on the upcoming series of MasterChef who asked to be edited out of the show after objecting to it airing over allegations against Gregg Wallace and John Torode has spoken out about her experiences while filming. ‌ In an interview on Good Morning Britain with Kate Garraway and Ed Balls this morning, contestant Sarah Shafi claimed she felt "uncomfortable" while filming the series which is set to air this week. ‌ Earlier this month, Wallace and Torode were both officially sacked from MasterChef after law firm Lewis Silkin upheld 45 out of 85 complaints against Wallace of inappropriate behaviour. ‌ It was later announced that Torode's contract would not be renewed following an upheld complaint of racist language against him - which he's said he has no recollection of. It comes after John Torode's wife Lisa Faulkner breaks her silence after his MasterChef sacking. Sarah, who says she believes the show shouldn't have gone ahead at all, told Kate Garraway and Ed Balls: "For me, it didn't feel as faithful to the food as I thought it would be. At the same time, I felt uncomfortable around the presenters. ‌ "It was a big deal to me. I'm an older woman, or a woman of that certain age and you can spot that kind of 'creep' and you think, 'I'll just get on with it.'" Continuing, Sarah said: "After I left the show, the main thing I felt was relief." Continuing the conversation about whether the show should continue to air, Ed said: "The annoying thing is, that it would have been better if they kept you in the show, and cut out Gregg Wallace and John Torode and put in some other presenter instead. I guess they felt they couldn't do that without undermining the integrity of the whole show." Shafi herself suggested the whole series be cut, although she said she wasn't given a reason why that couldn't happen, "other than it could be life changing for all the contestants." ‌ A spokesperson for Banijay said: "We have no record of Sarah raising concerns with producers at the time of filming, however when raised during the formal investigation process we thoroughly assessed her claims, including reviewing relevant programme rushes. "These do not support her versions of events regarding inappropriate comments or actions by Gregg Wallace which Sarah has acknowledged." A spokesperson for the BBC said: "As we said when we announced the show would be aired, this was not an easy decision in the circumstances and we appreciate not everyone would agree with it. Banijay consulted with all the contestants before that decision was made and there was widespread support for it going ahead. "We are sorry that this contestant does not support the decision and we are grateful she raised this with both the BBC and Banijay." The Mirror has reached out to Banijay for comment.

Loose Women star 'suffering constant pain' as she cares for mum with Alzheimer's

Jane Moore has been caring for her mother and dealing with her divorce, something she says has given her a 'push on attitude' as she navigates her sixties Loose Women star Jane Moore is 'suffering constant pain' as she cares for her mother. It comes as Jane's 94-year-old mum is living with Alzheimer's disease. ‌ Jane, 63, says her being the power of attorney for her mother and her divorce from ex-husband Gary Farrow has given her a 'push on through' attitude as she approaches the 'third age'. But she has also felt the physical struggles from the stresses. ‌ Writing in Platinum, she said: 'To put it mildly, it was a lot and I found myself suffering from constant abdominal pain (probably stress related) and struggling to sleep after decades of being able to nod off at the drop of a hat.' ‌ Jane says her struggles meant she was low on energy and had a general feeling of fatigue. It meant when she was given the chance to join I'm a Me Out of Here!, she saw the chance for an 'all-expenses paid reset'. While she admits the decision could have been seen as a touch 'selfish,' Jane admits the idea of a month away felt 'appealing'. The Loose Women star was the first eliminated in last year's series. ‌ And while some of the campmates around Jane struggled to adapt to life in the jungle, she admits she enjoyed the experience. She added: 'It felt more like a spa break to me.' Jane says she enjoyed tending to the fire, completing her chores, and spending time 'sitting on a log and prompting people to tell their life stories'. Jane says the jungle had 'zero stress,' which meant she 'loved' her time on the show. Fifteen days after she entered the I'm A Celeb camp, she says she left feeling 'refreshed'. It also taught Jane that it was okay for her to leave her mother with her adult children. ‌ Her spell away from home led Jane to realise that it is important to 'take time for yourself'. She says that could be a long walk, chilling with friends, or even merely sitting in your garden. Jane's professional career saw her starting life as a journalist, rising through the ranks to become the news editor for the Sunday Sport. She began appearing on Loose Women in 1999, leaving three years later. ‌ However she returned in 2013 and has remained on the show ever since. Since 2018 she has regularly anchored the programme. During her time away from the show she regularly appeared on a host of BBC programmes such as Question Time, The Andrew Marr Show and This Week. She announced her split from ex Gary on Loose Women in 2022. At the time she revealed he had a fall and she was acting as his carer. 'I didn't push him,' she joked, as she opened up about her ended marriage.

Siobhán McSweeney tells a truly surreal tale: best podcasts of the week

For this spin-off of the BBC World Service's unusual life stories series, Derry Girls and Amandaland actor Siobhán McSweeney narrates the tale of a crew who found themselves confined to a Caribbean-bound cargo ship during the Covid pandemic in 2020. It takes a little while to warm up but, once it gets going, the tale of ship cook Giulia and the 'zombie vibe' that she encountered at sea becomes increasingly surreal.
