Teenager says he did not see former Clare hurler Niall Gilligan hit his 12-year-old friend with a stick, court hears

Irish Times3 days ago
A teenager told a court on Thursday all he could hear was the sound of wood smacking off his then 12-year-old friend after he saw former All-Star and Clare All-Ireland winning hurler Niall Gilligan go to hit him.
At Ennis Circuit Court, the teenager said a 'horrible thing happened to my friend' when recalling the alleged assault of his then 12-year-old friend on October 5th, 2023, at the Jamaica Inn hostel in Sixmilebridge.
Mr Gilligan (48) of Rossroe, Kilmurry, Sixmilebridge, denies the assault causing harm with a stick of the boy.
The two boys had been exploring the abandoned Jamaica Inn hostel after 5pm on the day in question.

Mr Gilligan owned the hostel at the time and the jury has been told, in the days leading up to October 5th, it had been broken into and vandalised.
Under cross examination via video link from a room at Ennis courthouse, the now teenager acknowledged in his interview with gardaí in November 2023 he said he saw Mr Gilligan hit his friend.
On Thursday afternoon, the teenager said he did not see Mr Gilligan hit the other boy. He said: 'I saw him go to hit him, I mis-phrased that. All I could hear was the sound of wood smacking off my friend.'
The teenager said his friend was 'tiny' at the time of the incident.
The witness told counsel for Mr Gilligan, Patrick Whyms BL (instructed by solicitor, Daragh Hassett), when his friend slipped as they were running away from Mr Gilligan, 'I saw Niall coming at him with the stick about to swing at him'.
He said: 'We were both running away and he attacked my friend when we were both running in the opposite direction to him.'
The teenager disagreed with Mr Gilligan's version of events in which he said the altercation with his friend took place inside the building.
Asked how he felt by the specialist Garda interviewer in his November 2023 video evidence, the boy said 'terrified', and added 'but I just got out of there as fast as I could, all I could think was 'get out of there' and I did'.
Referring to his friend's screaming, the boy said: 'I heard him shouting, like I heard him screaming like telling him to stop. My friend telling him to f**k off and to leave him alone, that was about it.'
The witness hid in a nearby industrial estate and he said that felt relatively safe 'but I was still very scared that somehow he could have seen me'.
A short time later, the boy said he saw his friend come around the corner 'and he was limping like he was holding his arm, holding his hand, holding the wrist he broke and it was all swelling up'.
The jury also heard from witness for the State, Linda Quinn, from Sixmilebridge, who runs the local GAA club shop.
She said on her way into the club on the evening of October 5th, she noticed a child near the gate and something did not look right.
She said the boy asked her if she thought his hand was broken. 'It was very swollen.'
He then showed her a 'big gash' on his leg and asked her opinion.
When Ms Quinn asked him what happened, he told her he had fallen off his bike.
There was another deep gash on his arm. Ms Quinn told him he might need to get stitches. At this, the child got upset and Ms Quinn offered to give him a lift home.
Shortly afterwards, they arrived at his house, and after speaking to the boy's aunt, Ms. Quinn returned to work.
The trial continues on Friday before a jury of seven men and five women.

DJ Carey booed as he's honoured with ex-teammates ahead of All-Ireland final

DJ Carey's name was jeered as he was honoured along with his former Kilkenny teammates from 2000 by the GAA ahead of Sunday's All-Ireland final at Croke Park despite not being in attendance. The Kilkenny All-Ireland-winning team from 2000 were honoured prior to this year's decider between Cork and Tipperary. As is tradition, the victorious team from 25 years ago returned to GAA Headquarters on the day of the All-Ireland final. Each panel member's name, including Carey's, were read out individually. However, Carey's name was met with jeers and boos from the crowd as it was read out under an hour before throw-in. The Croke Park stadium announcer said of the nine-time All-Star winner: "Full forward DJ Carey from the Young Irelands. He scored 1-4 on the day, claiming his third All-Ireland of five in total and he would end the year with the eighth of his nine All-Star awards. DJ is not with us today." Carey was named the man of the match in the Cats' 2000 final win over Offaly after scoring 1-4 for Kilkenny as they ran out winners by 5-15 to 1-14. The five-time All-Ireland winner recently pleaded guilty to 10 counts of defrauding a number of people out of money while pretending he had cancer. The 10 counts Carey pleaded guilty to involved a total of 13 complainants, including Denis O'Brien, Owen and Ann Conway, Mark and Sharon Kelly, Aidan Mulligan, Tony Griffin and Christy Browne, Thomas Butler, Jeffrey Howes, Noel Tynan and Edwin Carey. Carey made his debut for Kilkenny in 1988 and played up until 2006. He is undoubtedly one of hurling's greatest ever players, having won 10 Leinster Senior Championship medals to go along with his five All-Ireland titles, as well as four league titles and a Player of the Year gong in 2000. He also collected nine All-Star awards during his career, trailing only Henry Shefflin with 11.

Man violently assaulted and partially stripped by gang in Tallaght

Gardaí have opened an investigation after a man was violently assaulted and partially stripped by a group of attackers in Tallaght, Dublin , on Saturday. The man, who in his 40s and originally from India, was set upon by a group of young men and severely beaten before passersby came to his aid. Saturday's incident occurred at about 6pm and left the man bleeding from multiple wounds. The attackers had removed his trousers. The assault is being investigated as a possible hate crime, sources said. READ MORE It is understood the group had falsely accused the man of acting inappropriately around children. These claims were later spread online, including by prominent far-right and anti-immigrant accounts. Garda sources said there is no truth to accusations the man was acting inappropriately. 'Gardaí in Tallaght were alerted to an incident at Parkhill Road, Tallaght, Dublin 24, on the evening of Saturday 19th, July, 2025, at approximately 6pm,' a Garda spokesman said. 'Gardaí attended the scene and a male, aged in his 40s was taken to Tallaght University Hospital with injuries.' The man was released from hospital early on Sunday morning. Investigators believe some of the attackers have carried out other unprovoked attacks on foreign nationals in the Tallaght area recently. Paul Murphy, a People Before Profit TD for the area, condemned the assault. 'It's horrifying to see a vicious attack like this happen in our neighbourhood. 'Responsibility lies not just with those who perpetrated the violence but also with those who have been spreading racist lies. The community is really shocked and outraged and will stand together against violence, hate and division.' There have been a number of incidents of foreign nationals being attacked in recent months after being falsely accused of inappropriate behaviour. Earlier this month, an asylum seeker in Limerick was assaulted after he was falsely accused by a far-right group of inappropriate approaches to young children. Videos were shared on social media, and gardaí believe the man was singled out for attack the next day by someone in Limerick who recognised him from the footage. The victim was an international protection applicant in his 40s from Afghanistan . Gardaí described as 'misinformation and disinformation' the videos of the man recorded in the city's People's Park as people surrounded him and accused him of inappropriate approaches to young children. Earlier this week, Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan said he is aware of instances of foreign nationals being falsely accused of crimes. 'Increasingly, you hear of people blaming immigrants for crimes. All I can say to you is: I have asked for the statistics and when you look at the prison population of people convicted of offences, the percentage of immigrants in prison is lower than the percentage of immigrants in society,' he said. 'So there's no substance to the suggestion that immigrants are more likely to commit a criminal offence.'

Garda will not reopen Bishop Eamonn Casey investigation

Gardaí have opted not to reopen the investigation into the late Bishop of Galway Eamonn Casey who had been accused of sexually abusing multiple children. The Garda confirmed the move in a statement on Sunday, shortly after it emerged that the bishop's remains had been removed from the crypt at the cathedral in Galway and returned to his family for reinterment. Garda Commissioner Drew Harris had requested the Garda National Protective Services Bureau conduct a review of the original investigation into the allegations last year. This followed the broadcast of an RTÉ documentary in 2024, made in association with the Irish Mail on Sunday, examining the Catholic Church's handling of sexual abuse allegations against the former Bishop of Galway. It included an interview with one of the former bishop's accusers, his niece Patricia Donovan, who stated that her uncle first raped her when she was just five years old. She claimed that the sexual abuse continued for years. In recent years it emerged that five people had complained of being sexually abused by Bishop Casey when they were children. Bishop Casey died in 2017 at the age of 89. 'At the request of the Garda Commissioner, the Garda National Protective Services Bureau conducted a review of the original investigation file,' the Garda said. 'This review has been completed and no further investigative actions have been identified.' On Saturday, the Galway diocese said that 'with the assent and co-operation of members of the late Bishop Eamonn's family and following prayers for the dead, his mortal remains have been moved from the Cathedral Crypt and entrusted to their care. 'It is their express wish that the arrangements they have made for Bishop Eamonn's final resting place remain private.' It added that 'members of Bishop Eamonn's family involved ask that their earnest desire for privacy be respected at this time'. In its statement, the diocese of Galway recalled how following the documentary last July it had issued a statement noting that the continued resting of the mortal remains of Bishop Casey in the crypt of the Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas, Galway, was a deeply felt matter that affected many people in different ways. It had appealed then 'for time and space' to allow for 'appropriate reflection and consultation'. In its statement at the weekend the diocese said it 'would like to thank everyone for their understanding of the situation, for their patience and for their respect as this process was undertaken and brought to a conclusion. 'Significant consensus emerged around the unique role of a Cathedral as a place of unity rather than division, healing rather than hurt and peace rather than disquiet.' Bishop Casey served as Bishop of Galway and Kilmacduagh from 1976 until 1992, when he stepped down after it emerged that he had fathered a child with an American woman, Annie Murphy , in 1974.
