During a contested application for bail, Newtownards Magistrates' Court heard claims that Cameron Pike choked his partner until she lost consciousness, made repeated threats that he was going to kill her, held a knife to her throat, threatened to kill himself, 'hacked at his wrists' with a knife, hit her dog with a knife, and swung a kitten against a fridge.
Standing handcuffed in the dock, the defendant, from the Beersbridge Road, was charged with 16 offences alleged to have been committed on May 11 this year.
The 30-year-old faces a raft of charges including accusations of aggravated burglary with intent to inflict GBH, making threats to kill, non-fatal strangulation, criminal damage, causing unnecessary suffering to animals, possessing a weapon, common assault, false imprisonment and domestic abuse.
It was revealed that Pike is already on bail for offences of assault, non-fatal strangulation and criminal damage allegedly committed against the same complainant in November last year.
A PSNI detective constable told the court that police objected to Pike being freed due to fears of further offending, witness interference and that he would not turn up for court appearances.
The detective constable outlined that it was at around 5am on Sunday when a police patrol was flagged down by the complainant whose friend and two children were in the car with her.
The alleged victim reported to police how she had been in her home with her friend when there was a 'loud bang at the front door' just before midnight and the 'heavily intoxicated defendant was then immediately in the living room… and behaving in a bizarre way'.
The court was told he asked his ex 'to say that she loved him', and when she refused, Pike allegedly 'went berserk', kicking a mirror to pieces as she screamed at him to get out of the house.
Pike allegedly 'launched himself' at her and after pushing his forehead into hers and 'growling' at her, he 'bit down on her right cheek just below her eye', leaving her marked and bruised.
'She reports being unable to move and feared the defendant was going to kill her,' said the detective constable, adding that when Pike did get off her he allegedly lifted a glass and threw it at her.
The complainant then ran to the kitchen but Pike followed her, kicking the door through before he rifled through the utensil drawer 'pulling out all the knives'. He allegedly threatened the two women that he was 'going to cut both their throats'.

The friend of Pike's ex 'ran for the front door but was caught by the defendant and dragged back in the living room by her neck, thrown on to the sofa and told not to move', the detective constable said.
The court heard that, at one point, Pike was standing with a knife in each hand and 'kept shouting at her and saying if she didn't say she loved him, he would cut his wrists'.
As he began slicing and cutting at himself, Pike declared 'look what you are making me do' and said the two women 'had killed him'.
When Pike's ex told him she had never wanted to be with him, he grabbed her by the throat with both hands, and with sufficient force that he 'lifted her off the ground slightly', he threw her onto the sofa where he got on top of her and began hauling out her hair extensions.
'She repeatedly shouted at him to get off her and leave, but she was conscious not to make too much noise as her children were asleep upstairs,' the detective constable told the court.
Pike got off but started hacking at his wrists again. He then he demanded that she drive him to playing fields in Bangor, warning her that on the way 'he would be holding a knife to her throat while she drove'.
She agreed and said 'let's go' but Pike 'changed the narrative again and said he would only leave if she told him she didn't want to be with him again'.
He allegedly choked her again, this time until she lost consciousness. When she came around, she fled to the kitchen and tried to escape out the back door, but as Pike followed behind her, her dog 'started barking at him'.
Pike allegedly threatened that he would kill the dog and as the 'standard bully' jumped to protect its owner, Pike punched it while still holding the knife, causing a cut to the dog's nose.
Pike also 'turned his attention to her kitten which was sat in its letter tray in the kitchen', lifting the kitten by the tail and flinging it against the fridge.
She told him the police were outside and 'the defendant immediately made a break for the kitchen window and threw himself through it'. The court heard that was only after he held 'a knife to the throat of the complainant and threatened her with 'I'm going to kill you in your sleep'.'
Conceding 'these are obviously serious offences', defence counsel Conan Rea argued that as his client did not have convictions for violence he could be bailed to live with his brother in Crossgar, albeit with a swathe of conditions to address police concerns.
District Judge Conor Heaney told Pike while his barrister had said 'really everything and anything that's possible to be said for you… this court is not satisfied that you'll abide by bail conditions'.
He refused bail and remanded Pike into custody.
The case was adjourned to June 4.

Former GAA player finally pays compensation for assault on reporter in Four Courts

Ex-Cavan footballer Eddie Óg O'Reilly was convicted in 2023 after attack on journalist Ray Managh, who asked that the money be given to charity A former Cavan GAA footballer who assaulted a court reporter after demanding that he not report on his debt case has finally paid the compensation ordered by a judge over two years ago. Eddie Óg O'Reilly was convicted in 2023 of assaulting journalist Ray Managh, now aged 82, in the Four Courts in 2018. The case was delayed on a number of occasions for administrative reasons and after O'Reilly's legal team said their client could not deal with the stress and anxiety caused by the case. O'Reilly, who has US citizenship, went to work in America after the attack, but was arrested by Garda Mick McGrath, of the Bridewell garda station, in Dublin Airport in 2019 when he was returning to Ireland. O'Reilly, from Kilcogy, Co Cavan, pleaded not guilty to the attack. After he was found guilty, Judge John Hughes characterised O'Reilly's evidence that he was terrified for his life due to Mr Managh and news photographers chasing him through the streets of Dublin as 'delusional'. 'The reporting of civil and criminal cases goes back hundreds of years — it is a valuable function in society and needs to be protected,' Judge Hughes said. Court reporter Ray Managh was assaulted by Eddie Óg O'Reilly in 2018. Photo: Collins Courts O'Reilly was given a nine-month suspended sentence for the offence. He was ordered to pay a fine of €2,000 and attend an anger management course. The judge also ordered him to pay Mr Managh €3,000 in compensation, which the reporter requested be paid directly to the cancer research unit at Children's Health Ireland (CHI) at Crumlin. The assault took place after O'Reilly was in court trying to prevent the repossession of a €500,000 investment apartment that he and his brother Michael had got into arrears on. After that hearing, O'Reilly followed Mr Managh out of the court and badgered him not to report on the case. When told 'no', he shouldered the journalist, then 75, into a lift and violently pinned him against a wall until he could get his notebook. The notebook was taken and never returned. Mr Managh was able to write the story despite the assault. O'Reilly refused to apologise and took an appeal that was dropped on the eve of the appeal hearing last January. Mr Managh said he had recently been told by gardaí that the children's hospital had received the €3,000 compensation he was due from the case. 'I was beginning to worry that it would never be paid, so it's a relief that it's finally over,' Mr Managh said. It is understood the compensation money was paid earlier this year after O'Reilly withdrew his appeal. Eddie Óg O'Reilly. Photo: Collins Courts Today's News in 90 Seconds - July 21st

Pensioner who died after being found by roadside had lost home in fire last May

Gardaí are keeping an open mind about the circumstances in which Gus Dempsey (77) died A pensioner who died after being discovered unresponsive on a Cork road had his accommodation plight raised in the Dáil earlier this year after his home and all his possessions were destroyed in an accidental fire. Gardaí are keeping an open mind about the circumstances in which Gus Dempsey (77) died outside Bandon on Saturday. A post mortem examination will be conducted at Cork University Hospital (CUH) by the Office of the State Pathologist and Gardaí said its findings will determine the nature of their investigation. However, there is no indication the death is in any way suspicious. Mr Dempsey from Ballinadee, Co Cork was discovered lying unresponsive on a roadside outside Bandon on Saturday morning. A bicycle was discovered nearby. "Shortly before 6:30am, Gardaí and emergency services were alerted after a male in his 70s was found unresponsive on a local road in the Kildarra area of Bandon," a Garda spokesperson said. "He was pronounced deceased at the scene a short time later. "The coroner has been notified and the deceased has since been removed to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital (CUH). "A post-mortem examination will be arranged and the outcome will determine the course of the Garda investigation. "Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward. In particular, they are seeking information regarding a male observed cycling on roads in the vicinity of Kildarra in the early hours of Saturday. "Additionally, any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were traveling in the area at the time asked to make it available to Gardaí. "Anyone with any information is asked to contact Bandon Garda Station on 023 885 2200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station." Gus Dempsey. Photo credit: Southern Star Today's News in 90 Seconds - July 20th Mr Dempsey had worked as a farmer and his home was destroyed in an accidental fire almost three months ago. He lost his home in Horsehill, Ballinadee outside Bandon on May 5 after a blaze broke out onsite. The pensioner was unmarried. He was a well-known figure in the Bandon, Ballinadee and Innishannon areas and relied on a bicycle for travel. His plight was highlighted by The Southern Star in the immediate aftermath of the house blaze. He explained that he farmed all his life and wanted to stay living in the countryside he knew so well. Mr Dempsey said that he was fortunate not to have been at home when the fire occurred at his rural property. "Thank God I was out when the fire took hold but it has left me without anything," he said. "All the top floor went. There was smoke and water damage and everything downstairs was destroyed. It is gone. "I was living there since early 1993 so it was a bit of a shock. I would not wish it on anybody. I had little bits and pieces, mementos inside that were precious. They were lost which is an awful shame. I was very sad about it.' His accommodation plight was raised in the Dáil by Cork South West TD Michael Collins. There was no social housing available for the elderly farmer. He said there were concerns that Mr Dempsey may end up homeless given that he only had temporary use of a property supplied by a kind-hearted neighbour. "Gus is homeless today," Mr Collins warned the Dáil. "His house burned down. His neighbour - who was brilliant - gave him a place to move into but their family is coming home and he has to be out by a certain date. "Now he has no home - he does not know if he will be sleeping on the street. "That man is in an awful situation because he could end up in a nursing home when he does not need to be in a nursing home. "That is the (social housing) crisis that we have in this country." The Cork Coroner's Office has been notified and Gardaí will prepare a file for an inquest to be staged next year.
