10,300 Indian illegal immigrants caught at US border in 2025. That's a 70% dip

There has been a 70% decline in Indians attempting to illegally enter the US between January and May 2025, with 10,382 Indian nationals, primarily from Gujarat, arrested during this period, seeking to enter the United States. This also included 30 unaccompanied minors. The development comes amid tighter border controls and raids on illegal immigrants under President Donald Trump. The data was released by US Customs and Border Protection (USCBP).advertisement
This is a substantial decrease from 34,535 arrests between January-May 2024 to 10,382 in the same period in 2025, averaging 69 daily arrests. During the same corresponding period in 2024, the daily arrest average was around 230 under the Joe Biden administration.Anticipating Donald Trump's return to power, many of these smuggling syndicates began scaling back their operations in late 2024, according to a report in The Times of India."The moment it became clear Trump would likely win again, routes started drying up," a source connected to a Gujarat-based human smuggling ring told TOI.The desire to migrate remains strong, but smugglers have either reduced their activity or increased their fees, and fears of tougher deportation policies are very real, according to the source.USCBP data also reflects a wider drop in border apprehensions across all nationalities – from 81,492 in January down to 28,617 in February – while it remained over 29,000 in the next three months. A total of 590,069 illegal immigrants were caught while entering the US, according to the data.advertisementA total of 1,233,959 illegal immigrants were caught during the same corresponding period in 2024.DATA OF UNACCOMPANIED MINORS FROM INDIAIn fiscal year 2024, US authorities apprehended over 500 unaccompanied Indian minors. Now, under the Trump administration, there's a much tougher stance on "unaccompanied children" left at the border by their parents.Thousands of individuals, including those from India, leave their children on the US-Mexico or US-Canada border in the hope that they will be taken in and granted American citizenship.Reports suggest children are often in the age bracket of 12-17, but sometimes they are younger also.According to an April 2024 report by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), there are an estimated 2.2 lakh (220,000) undocumented Indians living in the US. Since January 2025, more than 332 Indians have been deported.Yet, people from India keep trying to enter the US, often via perilous routes. Migrants sometimes take risky sea routes offered by smugglers to bypass heavily fortified land borders. On May 9, a tragic boat accident occurred near Del Mar, California, in which a 14-year-old Indian boy and his 10-year-old sister died off the coast of California. These boats often depart from Mexico's coast, sometimes travelling hundreds of miles.advertisementSince October 2024, the US Coast Guard has tracked 277 vessels suspiciously entering US waters from Mexico in the San Diego area.- Ends

Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Infra, Reliance Power clarify on SBI's action against Reliance Communications' loan account

Anil Dhirubhai Ambani group (ADAG) stocks — Reliance Infrastructure and Reliance Power — issued a clarification of a similar nature to the exchanges that the action by the State Bank of India (SBI) on the Reliance Communications loan account is unlikely to have any impact on them. Their statements came after India's biggest bank, SBI, classified the loan account of insolvent Reliance Communications as fraudulent, citing alleged diversion of funds in a case dating back to 2016. According to Indian banking laws, once an account is reported as a fraud, the matter is referred to enforcement agencies for criminal action, and the borrower is barred from securing further finance from banks and other institutions for at least five years. Reliance Communications disclosed that its total debt stood at ₹ 40,400 crore ($4.71 billion) in March, according to a Reuters report. SBI's letter also said it would report Anil Ambani, the director at Reliance Communications, to the Reserve Bank of India, in compliance with Indian banking regulations. Ambani is pursuing the matter as legally advised, a spokesperson for Reliance Communications said on Wednesday. Against this backdrop, both companies claimed that SBI's action will have "absolutely no impact on business operations, financial performance, shareholders, employees, or any other stakeholders".

‘This word is not right': Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand backs scrapping ‘secular' from Preamble; echoes RSS call

PTI file photo NEW DELHI: Shankracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati on Thursday said that the word secular didn't align with the nature of the Indian constitution. "The word secular was not there in the constitution originally; it was added later. That is why the word 'dharmnirpeksh' (secular) does not align with the nature of the Indian constitution," he said. The Shankaracharya of the Jyotir Math in Uttarakhand further said that the word 'secular' implied indifference to right and wrong, whereas 'dharma' was about distinguishing between the two. "Dharma means to think about right and wrong and to adopt the right and to reject the wrong. To become secular means that we have nothing to do with right or wrong. This cannot happen in anyone's life. So this word is also not right," he said. Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati was supporting the recent demand by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh ( RSS ) general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale for reconsidering the use of the words 'socialist' and 'secular' in the preamble of the Indian constitution. Addressing an event marking 50 years of the Emergency, Hosabale had remarked, 'Babasaheb Ambedkar never used these words in the preamble of the constitution. The words were added during the Emergency, when fundamental rights were suspended, parliament did not function, and the judiciary became lame." Opposition parties sharply criticised Hosabale's call to review the words, calling it an assault on the core values of the constitution. Leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, hit back at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on June 27, accusing it of wanting to replace the constitution with the Manusmriti. Escalating his criticism, Gandhi alleged that the RSS sought to deny the rights of the poor and marginalised and push them back into subjugation. "The mask of the RSS has slipped again," he said. In a post on X, Gandhi wrote: 'The RSS-BJP doesn't want the constitution. They want Manusmriti. Their real agenda is to rob the marginalised and the poor of their rights and enslave them once more by taking away their most powerful weapon — the constitution.' The words 'secular' and 'socialist', along with 'integrity', were added to the preamble through the constitution (Forty-second amendment) act, 1976.
