Malaysian PM meets Chinese FM on bilateral relations
The meeting was held during Wang's visit to Malaysia for ASEAN Plus foreign ministers' meetings. Noting that China is a trustworthy friend and partner of Malaysia, Anwar said that being friendly to China is a consensus of both the government and the people of Malaysia. Cooperation in various fields between the two countries has benefited both peoples.
At a time when multilateral mechanisms such as BRICS are gaining strength and countries are striving for independence and development, China plays a leading role, and Malaysia deeply appreciates China's contributions, Anwar said.
For his part, Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said that under the guidance of the two heads of state, bilateral relations have entered their best period in history.
China is a sincere friend of Malaysia and is ready to work with Malaysia to fully implement the important consensus reached by the two leaders, and to advance the high-level strategic China-Malaysia community with a shared future, Wang said.
Wang also expressed China's full support for Malaysia's ASEAN chairmanship in 2025 and its greater role in regional and international affairs, adding that China looks forward to making new progress in China-ASEAN cooperation.
Wang said that as developing countries, emerging economies, and key representatives of the Global South, China and Malaysia should join hands to address challenges and pursue common development and revitalization.
The U.S. unilateral imposition of high tariffs is an irresponsible move that runs counter to global cooperation and shared interests, Wang said, adding that China always stands together with the developing countries, remain committed to high-level opening-up, and share the benefits of its enormous market to expand win-win cooperation.
During his visit, Wang also held talks with Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan.

World Insights: China, Egypt deepen cooperation for shared growth
Egypt-China cooperation helps elevate both nations and offers a stronger voice for the Global South, said Egypt expert Salah El-Din Fahmy. CAIRO, July 14 (Xinhua) -- As China and Egypt -- now fellow BRICS members following Cairo's 2024 accession -- are to mark their 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026, analysts anticipate a significant deepening of their economic cooperation and strategic partnership. LANDMARK DEALS PROJECTS China and Egypt signed multiple cooperation documents last week in such areas as e-commerce, green and low-carbon development, development assistance, finance and health. Experts see the deals as a boost to Egypt's ambition to become a regional energy and logistics hub and to China's efforts promoting South-South cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Among the landmark deals, the People's Bank of China (PBOC) and the Central Bank of Egypt signed a memorandum of understanding to deepen financial cooperation, which covers local-currency settlement, collaboration on central bank digital currencies and digital innovation. According to Pan Gongsheng, governor of the PBOC, these efforts will provide more efficient and convenient services for enterprises of both countries in trade, investment and financing. Diaa Helmy, secretary-general of the Egyptian-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, described the financial cooperation as a critical signal of trust and a long-awaited step in Egypt-China economic ties. He said that using local currencies could help reduce dependence on foreign currencies, stabilize trade flows and open the door for deeper institutional coordination between the two countries. "I see that partial trade exchange between the two countries in their national currencies is necessary, and that it's time to swap debt for development, as China spares no effort to strengthen relations with Egypt, which it sees as a trusted friend," Helmy said. China and Egypt officially elevated their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2014, deepening bilateral relations across politics, trade, infrastructure, technology, and cultural exchange. Major China-Egypt projects under BRI and Egypt's Vision 2030 include the Central Business District in Egypt's New Administrative Capital and the China-Egypt TEDA Suez Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone -- an industrial cooperation model hosting 185 companies. Chinese companies have also contributed to projects like the Benban Solar Park in Aswan Province, among the world's largest, along with infrastructure in construction, manufacturing, transport and energy. "China's journey from traditional industry to high tech is a model for Egypt. We can benefit not just from Chinese investment, but from its expertise in technology, manufacturing and innovation," said Salah El-Din Fahmy, professor of economics at Al-Azhar University. SOUTH-SOUTH COOPERATION The China-Egypt partnership goes beyond the scope of economy, with officials and experts highlighting how the two countries are strengthening political coordination and amplifying the Global South's voice on key international issues. Helmy underlined the political side of the partnership, noting China supports Egypt and the Arab world on issues including the Palestinian cause, while Egypt and Arab states back China on core interests like the one-China principle and maritime rights. "This is a model of South-South cooperation across economic and political lines, reflecting the principle of a community of a shared future and the conviction that tensions and wars are not solutions but part of the problem," the expert said. In the coming years, coordination between the two countries "is essential to face global challenges, including climate change, maritime trade routes, supply chain risks, and geopolitical tensions," he added. Regarding the importance of the BRI for Egypt, Fahmy said that Egypt's geographic position makes it a gateway connecting Asia, Africa and Europe, offering a strategic platform within China's broader South-South development vision. Looking ahead, experts see the China-Egypt partnership as more than a bilateral success story -- it's part of a shift toward a balanced, multipolar world where emerging economies play a stronger role in global development. "Egypt-China cooperation is entering a new qualitative phase, helping elevate both nations and offer a stronger voice for the Global South on the international stage," Fahmy said.

Twelve Hong Kong activists appeal convictions in landmark ‘47 democrats' case
HONG KONG, July 14 — Twelve Hong Kong pro-democracy activists appealed their subversion convictions and jail terms today in a national security case that has spotlighted Beijing's ongoing crackdown on dissent and drawn international criticism. The appeal stems from the '47 democrats' case, named for the number of activists who were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit subversion in 2021. The court eventually found 45 of the defendants guilty of organising and holding an unofficial primary election in July 2020 soon after Beijing imposed a sweeping national security law in response to pro-democracy protests the year before. Two defendants were acquitted. Prosecutors considered the action to be a plot to undermine the Hong Kong government. Security was tight around the West Kowloon law courts as scores of police officers, some with police dogs, patrolled the area and occasionally searched passers-by. 'They're not criminals,' said an elderly man surnamed Wong who was among around 100 people queuing to get a public ticket for the hearing. Foreign diplomats from over half a dozen countries were in attendance for this latest stage of the legal saga that began with dawn police raids on the homes of high-profile democrats in early 2021. Some rights groups and countries have condemned the case as politically motivated and called for the release of the democrats who were sentenced last November to prison terms of between four and 10 years. 'This appeal hearing is a chance for the courts to start righting the wrongs of this unprecedented mass prosecution,' said Sarah Brooks, Amnesty International's China director. Hong Kong and Chinese authorities have defended the independence of the judiciary, saying no one is above the law and the defendants have received a fair trial. The defendants were accused of attempting to establish unified pro-democracy candidates through the unofficial primary election to boost their chances of securing an unprecedented parliamentary majority. Prosecutors have said they intended to disrupt the government and even force Hong Kong's leader to resign by 'indiscriminately vetoing' budget proposals. Of the 16 democrats who pleaded not guilty during the trial, 11 have appealed their convictions, including Gordon Ng, Gwyneth Ho and Owen Chow, who were all jailed for over seven years. Prince Wong, who pleaded guilty, is appealing her sentence. The appeals are expected to take around 10 days, and also include a government request to overturn the acquittal of barrister Lawrence Lau. Erik Shum, a lawyer for two of the defendants, argued the democrats' actions were legal as lawmakers were free to vote against any bills and such votes 'could not possibly be an abuse of power'. A years-long crackdown under a China-imposed national security law has resulted in scores of arrests and the closures of liberal media outlets and civil society groups. — Reuters

Bursa edges up as China trade data lifts sentiment, KLCI stays above 1,530
KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 — Bursa Malaysia reversed last Friday's losses to close higher on Monday, tracking gains in regional markets. At 5pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) climbed 1.44 points, or 0.09 per cent, to 1,537.51 from Friday's close of 1,536.07. The benchmark had opened 0.10 of a point lower at 1,535.97 and hovered between 1,533.93 and 1,538.33 throughout the session. The market breadth was negative, with 514 decliners outpacing 432 gainers and 510 counters unchanged, while 962 were untraded and nine suspended. Turnover declined to 2.93 billion shares worth RM1.67 billion, compared with 3.37 billion shares worth RM2.30 billion last Friday. UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research, Mohd Sedek Jantan, said the key index's positive performance was underpinned by stronger-than-expected trade data from China, with exports rising 5.8 per cent year-on-year in June, well above the 3.6 per cent forecast. 'The data suggested that Chinese exporters were accelerating shipments ahead of the expiry of the 90-day tariff reprieve, providing some relief to global market sentiment and partially offsetting lingering concerns over Washington's tariff rhetoric,' he told Bernama. Investors will also monitor more upcoming data from China, particularly June trade figures and the second-quarter gross domestic product (GDP). The Chinese government is due to release the economic data tomorrow. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said the local market sentiment remains cautious amid ongoing concerns over US tariffs, with investors closely monitoring their implications for Asean economies and global supply chains. 'Nevertheless, the benchmark index is well supported above the 1,530 level. While commodity-related stocks saw some selling pressure, defensive and stable names in banking, consumer and utilities showed resilience,' he noted. Thong anticipates the FBM KLCI to trend within the range of 1,530-1,560 for the week. Among the heavyweight counters, Maybank gained three sen to RM9.72, while Public Bank and Tenaga Nasional rose two sen each to RM4.34 and RM13.98, respectively.
