Discovery shows bizarre behaviour led to extinction of giant kangaroos at ancient site

A giant kangaroo that once thrived on the Australia continent became extinct due to an unfortunate, and rather stubborn, behaviour. It simply didn't like to travel.
Scientists made the discovery at an outback research site in Central Queensland's Mt Etna Caves region. For thousands of years, a towering rainforest flourished there, but after a major climatic change occurred the area became arid and inhospitable.
Lead researcher Laurikainen Gaete said these towering Protemnodons had 'incredibly small' home ranges. Sadly, the animals didn't want to move away even as their habitat deteriorated around 300,000 years ago.
'Using data from modern kangaroos, we predicted these giant extinct roos would have much larger home ranges. We were astounded to find that they didn't move far at all, with ranges mirroring smaller modern kangaroo species,' Gaete said.

Researchers from the University of Wollongong, Queensland Museum and the University of Adelaide made the discovery using a new procedure they've compared to modern-day GPS tracking.
Queensland Museum scientist and senior curator Dr Scott Hocknull described the isotopic technique as a 'game-changer' that's 'blown our field right open'. It involves examining distinct geological features captured inside fossilised teeth, that suggested individual animals foraged for food close to where they died and were fossilised.
'Imagine ancient GPS trackers, we can use the fossils to track individuals, where they moved, what they ate, who they lived with and how they died – it's like Palaeo Big Brother', he quipped.

The team now plans to return to Mount Etna along with the Capricorn Caves to examine the past behaviours and diets of other extinct species of kangaroos.
The research was published in the online journal PLOS ONE.

Venturing out after being cut off by floodwaters for a week, a Victorian woman was stunned to discover the landscape around her had dramatically changed. Tegan Roberts was completely unaware of what had occurred until she stopped her car at the edge of a country road. Stretching kilometres into the distance was a thick layer of spider web blanketing the sodden paddocks of Bairnsdale, in Victoria's East Gippsland region. 'It was just everywhere. The way it was moving in the wind with the sun reflecting on it was awesome,' she told Yahoo News. When she left home on Monday, Tegan had been hoping to photograph birds, but instead she turned her camera to the patchwork of webs. Intrigued by what was building them, she zoomed in and was shocked at the number of spiders scuttling about. 'I'm not usually creeped out by spiders, but after standing there for 10 minutes, I was getting the heebie-jeebies,' she said. 'I had all the windows down in my car, so I thought, oh God, I better put them up. And I brushed myself down just in case because I didn't know what kind of spiders they were.' Known as the Gossamer effect, it occurs when huge numbers of ground-dwelling juvenile wolf spiders climb up vegetation and other structures and congregate. The structures they create are not capture webs but rather 'platform silk' designed as a retreat. 'We are unsure as to exactly why this phenomenon occurs, but in areas with large numbers of wolf spiders, it usually appears to be in response to localised flooding or inundation. In essence, the spiders are escaping being drowned, and the sheer number of individuals accounts for the visual spectacle,' he told Yahoo News. 'There is nothing to be concerned about with these mass gatherings — tiny wolf spiders like this are harmless — and they will eventually disperse and return to the ground to feed. But it is quite the sight in the meantime.' What excites him about the behaviour is that it provides insight into just how many individual spiders populate the Australian landscape. Without them, paddocks would be overrun with insects that would destroy crops. Museums Victoria's senior curator in entomology, Dr Ken Walker, told Yahoo News the phenomenon last occurred in eastern Victoria back in June, 2021. While the effect appears to entirely take over a town, it is actually short-lived. "The webs are made from the finest of spider silk, so they do not last as long, as natural wind destroys them quickly," he explained. A mud volcano has roared to life in front of a temple in Taiwan, with mesmerizing videos capturing the moments mud shot out of the ground beneath a crown of fire. The Wandan mud volcano, located in the Wandan Township of southern Taiwan, spat bubbling mud out of four separate vents on Thursday (June 26) as ejected material reached a height of 6.6 feet (2 meters), Formosa Television (FTV) News reported. Footage from the roughly 10-hour-long eruption shows flames igniting above the bubbling mud. However, while mud volcanoes can ignite naturally, the Wandan flames were deliberately set by local people to burn off ejected methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change, according to Reddit posts by Mark Tingay, an adjunct associate professor of geology and geophysics at the University of Adelaide in Australia. "Local folks ignite these vents by throwing burning rags into them," Tingay wrote in response to one Reddit user asking about the flames. "They do it mostly to flare off the gases, but partly because it looks awesome!" Some mud volcanoes are linked to hot geothermal activity, like those in Yellowstone National Park. However, Wandan's mud volcano is the more common type of this geological feature. "These mud volcanoes in Taiwan are driven by high fluid pressures that can form deep underground, rather than by magmatic influence," Tingay wrote in another Reddit comment. Tingay studies mud volcanoes and regularly shares information about eruptions on social media. In his latest posts, he described the Wandan event alongside a video taken by 張寶惠, the mud volcano temple's caretaker. 張寶惠 also shared videos on Facebook, showing the mud volcano violently erupting from different angles. The latest eruption began at around 5 a.m. local time and continued until around 3.40 p.m. This is the 10th time the Wandan mud volcano has erupted within the last three years, according to Tingay's posts. In previous years, the volcano has erupted underneath the temple, with mud shooting up the outside wall and flowing inside, covering the floor. Mud volcanoes vary in size and shape, and in some cases, form massive cone-like structures very similar in appearance to regular volcanoes. They can naturally produce flames when erupting rocks strike against each other, creating a spark that ignites ejected flammable gases. Researchers believe this is what produced a towering inferno above a mud volcano in the Caspian Sea in 2021, Live Science previously reported.

Archaeologists have discovered 35 wooden tools from the Old Stone Age in China which they say show impressive craftsmanship, advanced cognitive skills and offer new insights into what ancient humans might have eaten. The 300,000-year-old tools are the oldest wooden artifacts ever documented in East Asia, according to a study published Thursday (July 3) in the journal Science. They include digging sticks made of pine and hardwood, hooks for cutting roots and small, pointed implements for extracting edible plants from the ground. "This discovery is exceptional because it preserves a moment in time when early humans were using sophisticated wooden tools to harvest underground food resources," study lead author Bo Li, a professor in the School of Earth, Atmospheric and Life Sciences at the University of Wollongong Australia, said in a statement. The tools date to the early Paleolithic period, also known as the Old Stone Age (3.3 million to 300,000 years ago). Wooden artifacts from this time are extremely rare due to organic decomposition, and only a handful of archaeological sites have yielded similar objects, according to the new study. But most of these objects, including spears from Schöningen in Germany, were designed for hunting — these newfound tools were made for digging. Researchers found the tools buried in oxygen-poor clay sediments on the shores of an ancient lake in Gantangqing, an archaeological site in southwestern China's Yunnan province. The sediments preserved deliberate polishing and scraping marks on the tools, as well as plant and soil remains on some of the edges that gave researchers clues about the tools' function. "They made planned visits to the lakeshore and brought with them fabricated tools of selected wood for exploiting underground tubers, rhizomes, or corms." Such planned visits show that 300,000 years ago, human ancestors in East Asia were crafting and using tools for specific purposes, demonstrating considerable foresight and intention, the researchers wrote. The artifacts also suggest that these early humans had a good understanding of which plants and parts of plants were edible, the researchers noted. "The tools show a level of planning and craftsmanship that challenges the notion that East Asian hominins were technologically conservative," Li said in the statement. This idea is rooted in previous discoveries in East Asia of stone tools that seemed "primitive" in comparison to tools found in western Eurasia and Africa, according to the study. Both produced estimates indicating that the wooden tools were between 250,000 and 361,000 years old. The plant remains on the tools have not been identified because their decomposition is too advanced, but other plant remains at Gantangqing indicate that early humans there ate berries, pine nuts, hazelnuts, kiwi fruit and aquatic tubers, according to the study. "The discovery challenges previous assumptions about early human adaptation," Li said in the statement. "While contemporary European sites (like Schöningen in Germany) focused on hunting large mammals, Gantangqing reveals a unique plant-based survival strategy."
