Best stocks: Entertainment stocks are unlikely winners this year — One to watch if it can break $120

CNBC23-06-2025
(This is The Best Stocks in the Market , brought to you by Josh Brown and Sean Russo of Ritholtz Wealth Management.) Josh — Sometimes I'm surprised by what's working in the market. If I had to guess, I probably would not have picked entertainment-related companies to be among the best industry groups in the S & P 500 on a year-to-date basis and neither would you have. And that's despite the fact that we've been writing about Spotify and Netflix here an awful lot. Turns out there's more to the story than just those two tickers, as Sean will reveal. Within that group of names, Disney (DIS) popped onto our list as Wall Street begins to give the company more credit for its 125 million global Disney Plus subscribers, 12% market share in streaming video on demand (SVOD) and almost $3 billion in streaming revenue in the first quarter of this year. We'll show you the chart below, but first some Best Stocks stats: Sector Leaderboard As of 6/23/2025 morning, there are 115 names on The Best Stocks in the Market list Top Sector Ranking: Top Industries: Top 5 Best Stocks by Relative Strength: Sector Spotlight: Entertainment Sean — Within S & Ps classification, companies like Disney , Live Nation , and Roblox all land within the entertainment sector, which interestingly is not in the consumer discretionary sector, but is classified as communications. The lines between media, technology, and communication have blurred. From Netflix's growing streaming platform to Roblox's virtual worlds and Live Nation's global concert footprint, these platforms have become less cyclical. We highlighted this defensive trait in some of these stocks in our first piece for The Best Stocks in the Market. We aren't just seeing less volatility in these stocks — we're seeing growth. Just last week, Roblox hit a new all-time high for concurrent users with 25.8M players utilizing the platform at the same time. Nielsen just put out rankings and data for television inclusive of streaming platforms, and 50% of the top 10 best performing shows (ranked by viewers over a 35 day period) came from Netflix. The entertainment industry has done quite well despite the increased recession risk. Looking at every entertainment-classified stock in the S & P 500 (there are 10), the median year-to-date return is 17.5%. The median return for a stock in the S & P 500 is less than 1%. Ninety percent of the entertainment industry within the S & P 500 is within 10% of a 52 week high, the only stock not within a 52 week high is Warner Brothers (WBD). Only 35% of the S & P 500 is within 10% of 52 week highs. We currently have 7 entertainment industry stocks on our list: Disney, Liberty Media , Live Nation, Netflix, Roblox, Spotify, and Take-Two Interactive . Disney makes the list This is a 5 year price chart for Disney: It has been a struggle for Disney, but the stock just rocketed off its early April lows. If the stock can meaningfully break out above that $120 level, there is a ton of room for the stock to run. Disney is dominating the box office thus far. Three of the top 5 best performing movies this year are Disney releases. Lilo & Stitch is the second best movie grossing $386M, Captain America: Brave New World is 4th taking in $200M, and Thunderbolts is in the 5th spot at $189.5M. This industry has quietly become one of the strongest performers in the S & P 500 this year. With user growth accelerating on platforms like Roblox, dominant streaming engagement from Netflix, and a resurgent box office led by Disney, this group is performing well in what has been a challenging environment for consumer-sensitive names. Risk management: Josh — Let's keep this one simple. The $120 level is resistance. You can see that clearly in the chart below. Each attempt to get above was smacked down as the sellers swamped the buyers. That will happen until it doesn't, and then look out. I'm showing you a longer term chart here because I want you to see the whole consolidation. I'd use the $100 level as my line in the sand. If it gets below there the momentum is dead — that's the market telling you to look for a better set-up. Love Is Blind 's Lauren Speed and Cameron Hamilton Reveal Sex of Baby

Originally appeared on E! Online Lauren Speed-Hamilton and Cameron Hamilton are no longer blind when it comes to the sex of their baby. Two months after announcing that they're expecting their first child together, the Love Is Blind couple—who met and married while filming season one of the Netflix reality series in 2018—shared an adorable gender reveal video, unveiling that they are going to have a boy. In a black-and-white clip shared to Instagram Aug. 1, Lauren, 37, and Cameron, 38, stepped out of their house to find that the cheekily named "Hamilton Herald" newspaper arrived at their doorstep. When they picked up the periodical, the couple discovered an article that said "It's a boy," and the video subsequently filled with color, turning the flowers and the background blue. And the pair were more than happy with the news, with Lauren jumping up and down with excitement before leaning over to give Cameron a sweet kiss. Back in May, the reality TV personalities detailed the moment they found out Lauren was pregnant following a long journey with in-vitro fertilization (IVF). More from E! Online Tom Selleck, 80, Looks Unrecognizable During Rare Outing Without Signature Mustache Why Bryan Kohberger Left Roommate Dylan Mortensen Alive, According to Idaho Prosecutor Bachelor Nation's Madison Prewett and Husband Grant Troutt Share Plans to Spank Their Daughter "We were counting down the days 'til we could test because we did IVF," Cameron told People at the time. "We did the classic test and we both went into the bathroom to look." When the pregnancy test came back positive, Lauren recalled feeling a sense of "relief." 'Seeing the word pregnant, it was amazing,' she told People. 'We just looked at each other. I fell to my knees and cried." Noting that they had been trying for a baby for "four years," Lauren added, "It's been a long time coming." Indeed, the couple have previously gotten candid about their challenging fertility journey, which involved Lauren taking medications and daily shots in order to help with the process. And while they shared that the period was undoubtedly difficult for them, Cameron also said it has strengthened their bond as a couple. "Knowing that IVF and all this stuff wasn't really something that you naturally wanted to do but you did it for me," Cameron told Lauren during an October 2024 episode of their The Love Seat podcast, "you showed me a new level of love that I'd never seen before." Arnold Schwarzenegger's 'FUBAR' canceled at Netflix after 2 seasons

The series, which first debuted on Netflix in 2023, marked the first leading role for the actor on a scripted television show. Turns out, he won't be back. Arnold Schwarzenegger's action series FUBAR will not be returning for a third season at Netflix, Entertainment Weekly can confirm. A source adds that the streamer is proud of the work that producers, cast, and crew put into the show. The series, which first debuted on Netflix in 2023, marked the first leading role for the actor on a scripted television show. The first season was a ratings hit, according to the streamer, but the second season apparently had a much quieter debut in June. (According to Variety, season 2 made Nielsen's streaming originals top 10 only for the week of June 16, and fell off thereafter.) Per the logline, FUBAR follows a father and daughter who learn that they've each secretly been working as CIA Operatives for years. The two then realize their entire relationship has been a lie and that they truly don't know one another at all. Forced to team up as partners, the series tackles universal family dynamics against a global backdrop of spies, action, and humor. In a statement ahead of the series premiere, creator, showrunner, and executive producer Nick Santora called the show "by far, the most surreal project of my career." He continued, "I grew up watching Arnold Schwarzenegger films — I'd hit my dad up for a few bucks so I could race to the movies and see the biggest star in the world on the big screen — so creating the first scripted television project for Arnold is unbelievably exciting for me." Santora added, "The thing I always marveled at was how Schwarzenegger could be funny while still kicking ass ... that's why I wanted FUBAR to be a hysterical, CIA-spy comedy mixed with heart-stopping action! And it is all that — and more. I'd love to elaborate with more details, but, sorry, it's classified." In addition to Schwarzenegger, FUBAR also starred Monica Barbaro, Milan Carter, Fortune Feimster, Travis Van Winkle, Fabiana Udenio, Aparna Brielle, Guy Burnet, Andy Buckley, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jay Baruchel, Barbara Eve Harris, and Scott Thompson. In addition to Santora, Schwarzenegger, Adam Higgs, Scott Sullivan, Phil Abraham, Amy Pocha, Seth Cohen and Skydance's David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Matt Thunell served as additional executive producers. Skydance Television produced. While FUBAR wasn't so lucky, Netflix has renewed several shows of late, including: Wednesday, Untamed, Tires, Ransom Canyon, Virgin River, Bridgerton, Forever, Four Seasons, The Diplomat, My Life with the Walter Boys, Survival of the Thickest, Geek Girl, Lincoln Lawyer, Sweet Magnolias, Devil May Cry, Beauty in Black, Nobody Wants This, A Man on the Inside, and The Vince Staples Show.
