India household consumption set to pick up in 2-3 quarters: Report
The overall household consumption is set to pick up in the next two to three quarters on rural strength, a Swiss brokerage said on Tuesday. Softened inflation, which boosts purchasing power, improving crop outlook on good monsoons and a USD 20 billion social welfare spends on women are set to strengthen rural consumption, UBS Securities said in a report. "Even as rural activity is gaining traction, we believe it is still too early to expect a broad-based recovery in household consumption, as rural consumption accounts for less than half a percentage share of the total," its chief India economist Tanvee Gupta Jain said. "In our base case, we expect overall household consumption to start picking up over the next 2-3 quarters as rural consumption strengthens," she said. Live Events There is a "divide" within rural consumption wherein the demand for mass-market products is muted while premium categories continue to grow, the report said. Real rural wage growth adjusted for food inflation rose to a six-year high of 4.5 per cent while agricultural terms of trade "worsened" on lower food prices in the June quarter, the report said. Rural consumer sentiment was up, two-wheeler and tractor sales were up 9 per cent and 35 per cent on-quarter, respectively, and rural fast-moving consumer goods sales were also robust, the report said. On the urban consumption front, the report said demand indicators, including passenger car sales and production of durable goods, fell sequentially in the June quarter, even as urban consumer sentiment remained stable. The USD 55 billion payout to government employees from 2026, as the eighth pay commission recommendations get implemented, will help the urban demand, it said.

India set to become 2nd-best represented nation in Times Higher Education rankings
India is set to break new records and become the second-best represented nation in the world, behind only the US, in the 2026 edition of Times Higher Education ranking, according to Times Higher Education's Chief Global Affairs Officer Phil Baty . The comments were made by Baty in a statement on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the new National Education Policy (NEP). The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings (re-launched for 2026 as the Sustainability Impact Ratings) assess universities' social and economic impact based on their contributions to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Universities are examined on their teaching, research, community outreach and the stewardship of their resources across hundreds of metrics based on all 17 of the UN SDGs. Live Events Baty noted that India's National Education Policy of 2020 was so pioneering and so bold that many said at its launch five years ago that it was simply too ambitious to succeed. "...but exactly five years since the NEP 2020 was formally launched, there is a growing body of independent evidence that, despite the dramatic disruption of the COVID pandemic, the bold vision is rapidly becoming a reality. "Certainly, regarding ambitions to improve higher education quality and to finally embrace the full internationalisation of Indian higher education, Times Higher Education's data is clear -- the plans are working," he said. In 2019, the year before NEP2020, India had 49 universities in the rankings - a share of around four per cent of all ranked universities. In the 2026 edition, India's representation will have almost tripled to 128 ranked universities, representing nearly six per cent of all ranked universities. "This remarkable achievement reflects a nation-wide commitment from Indian universities to collect better data, to step forward and subject themselves to global data benchmarking, to put themselves on the world stage alongside the top research universities worldwide -- and most importantly to be a visible and active part of the global academic community , where research collaboration and talent exchange can help them to thrive further. "And it is not just in representation where India is showing exceptional progress. There are improvements in quality too. So the data is clear that India's universities are increasingly rubbing shoulders with the world's global research elite. But based on an additional, very different set of performance metrics based on their social and economic impact, India's universities are also starting to really shine," he said.

Merck to cut jobs and costs as demand for Gardasil in China remains weak
Drugmaker Merck & Co on Tuesday announced job and cost cuts it said will save $3 billion a year as it posted lower second-quarter results due to continuing weak demand for its Gardasil vaccine in China. The company said the cost cuts include $1.7 billion in annual savings from the elimination of certain administrative, sales and R&D positions. It also plans to reduce its global real estate footprint and optimize its manufacturing network. The company expects to achieve the full $3 billion in annual savings by the end of 2027. Investors have been concerned about where Merck will replace revenue from its blockbuster cancer treatment Keytruda - the world's best-selling drug, which is set to lose patent protection toward the end of the decade. Gardasil's problems in China have also been a drag on the company's results. Live Events Merck said it earned $5.4 billion, or $2.13 a share, in the quarter , down from $5.8 billion, or $2.28 a share, a year earlier. Analysts, on average, had forecast earnings of $2.01 a share. Merck's quarterly R&D costs were lower than expected. Revenue in the quarter was $15.8 billion, down from $16.1 billion a year earlier. Analysts, on average, were expecting revenue of $15.9 billion. Gardasil sales missed already weak Wall Street estimates. The company said it sold $1.1 billion of the vaccine, which prevents cancer caused by the human papillomavirus, down 55% from a year ago. Analysts had been expecting $1.3 billion of Gardasil sales in the quarter. Merck paused shipments of Gardasil to China in January. It said the decline was primarily in China, but lower demand in Japan had hurt sales as well. Sales of Keytruda rose 9% to just under $8 billion in the quarter, topping analyst forecasts of $7.9 billion. The company, which announced a $10 billion takeover of UK-based Verona Pharma earlier in July, narrowed its full-year revenue forecast to a range of $64.3 billion to $65.3 billion. It had previously forecast revenue of $64.1 billion to $65.6 billion for the year. It now expects to earn $8.87 to $8.97 a share in 2025. Analysts had forecast 2025 earnings to be $8.87.
