Massive volcano eruption in Indonesia spews ash 10,000 metres high
Indonedia's Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki volcano erupted on Tuesday (17 June), sending a towering ash plume 10,000 metres into the sky.
Authorities raised the eruption alert to the highest level and extended the danger zone to 8km.
The eruption followed an intense spike in volcanic activity—50 incidents in two hours, far above the daily average. No casualties were reported. Ash clouds were seen from cities 90 to 150km away.
'This is the first time I have seen an eruption this big,' said local villager Frans Kino. Residents were warned about possible lava flows triggered by rainfall.

Tragically, six bodies were recovered from the water shortly after capsizing. The following afternoon, a seventh victim was found, and on Monday afternoon, the final missing boater was discovered deceased - bringing the death toll to eight. But even boaters who managed to reach shore during the storm weren't out of danger - many suffered after falling into the frigid water, which remained below 60 degrees throughout the day, LA Times reported. 'There was just a massive amount of people that were in hypothermia or shock,' Joby Cefalu, a lifelong Tahoe boater, told the outlet. Cefalu, along with marina staff and local residents, quickly set up a makeshift triage area, working tirelessly for nearly two hours to assist at least 60 people in need. 'I'm on the water a great deal of days of the year... I've been in just about every type of condition, and that was just something I've never seen happen so fast,' he said. 'It was just a tragic day on Lake Tahoe.' The storm even caught forecasters off guard, with meteorologist Matthew Chyba of the National Weather Service in Nevada admitting, 'We weren't expecting it to be so strong.' A nearby weather station recorded wind speeds reaching 45 mph during the disaster, while meteorologists now attribute the extreme conditions to the convergence of an unseasonal cold front and a cluster of thunderstorms, The Sacramento Bee reported. Indonesia volcano erupts again as death toll rises to 22
An Indonesian volcano was active again on Monday, spewing out hot clouds of ash, two days after a powerful eruption killed at least 22 people and left dozens missing. Mt. Semeru, the tallest mountain on the island of Java, erupted dramatically on Saturday, shooting a towering column of ash into the sky that blanketed surrounding villages. 'Semeru is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. Before and after the 4 December eruption, it will continue to be active,' Mr Liswanto, the head of the Semeru Volcano Observatory, told Reuters. Some residents returned to their homes to check on belongings and livestock, but Mr Liswanto urged people to keep a safe distance. 'People need to be more vigilant because the potential threat is still there,' he added. In the Sumberwuluh area, rescue teams battled poor weather to retrieve victims from the rubble. 'The main obstacle is the weather... Hopefully the weather going forward will be good enough to make it easier for us to search,' Wuryanto, operations director of the national search and rescue agency (Basarnas), told reporters. People have posted photos of missing loved ones on Facebook, with pleas for any information about their whereabouts.
