'AB de Villiers better than half internationals...': Steyn's bold IPL claim gets corrected; ‘Half? Make it 90 per cent'

Legendary South African fast bowler Dale Steyn made an audacious claim while comparing AB de Villiers to current international cricketers in the Indian Premier League (IPL), following the latter's heroics for South Africa Champions in the recently concluded World Championship of Legends. AB de Villiers scored three tons in four matches in WCL 2025 De Villiers, now a retired international batter, turned back the clock on Saturday at Edgbaston in Birmingham, scoring a 47-ball century to help South Africa beat Pakistan Champions by nine wickets in the final of the second WCL season. It was his third century in just four innings in the tournament. Following his Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament-winning performance, Steyn took to social media to assert that de Villiers is better than half the international cricketers currently playing in the IPL — or possibly more. However, fans were quick to correct him, insisting that de Villiers is better than 90 per cent of today's IPL batters. 'Unpopular/Popular opinion. Ab is still better than half the internationals at IPL. Maybe even more,' Steyn wrote on X. Chasing 196 at Edgbaston, De Villiers was at his vintage best, smashing an unbeaten 120 off just 60 balls. His knock, studded with 10 boundaries and eight sixes, featured a crucial 72-run opening stand with Hashim Amla, followed by an unbroken 125-run partnership with JP Duminy, who scored a fluent 51*. Earlier, Pakistan Champions—who reached the final after India refused to play them in the WCL semifinals due to ongoing geopolitical tensions—opted to bat first after winning the toss. Opener Sharjeel Khan gave Pakistan a flying start with a sublime 76 off 44 balls, putting on a 76-run stand with Shoaib Malik. However, the momentum dipped in the middle overs as Hardus Viljoen and Wayne Parnell picked up two wickets each. De Villiers finished WCL 2025 with 429 runs, including three centuries.

Abhishek Nayar: Want to create culture of winning trophies at UP Warriorz

Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar views his new role as head coach of the Women's Premier League side UP Warriorz as more of an opportunity than a challenge, as he aims to build a trophy-winning culture. Nayar was appointed as the head coach of the franchise after a disappointing last-place finish in the WPL earlier this year, which followed its fourth-place finish in 2024 and third-place finish in the inaugural edition in 2023. 'I've always looked at anything as opportunities, and this is an opportunity, which I'm very, very excited for in that regard,' Nayar told PTI. 'The opportunity is to create a culture where everyone understands that this franchise plays to win trophies, and try and bring that mentality into our ecosystem,' he said. Unfazed by how the last three seasons in WPL have gone for his new franchise, Nayar said the only challenge for them is to move up. 'If I have to be brutally honest, I'm not sure yet what challenges (are that) I'm about to face. I don't know, and that's the exciting part,' he said. 'I don't look at the challenges. I look at the opportunities. The opportunities with our team this year are that we've obviously been last, last year, so there's only one way up,' he said. As he gears up to take up a big role in the WPL, Nayar pointed out specific changes that he has observed in women's cricket in India. 'When you saw the England Women's team facing up against the Indian Women's team, you could see a stark difference in power and in the variety of shots; the bowlers as well,' he said. 'It's not often that an Indian women's team travels abroad and wins with such conviction. When that happens, you know that Indian cricket is in the right hands. They're moving in the right direction.' ALSO READ | KL Rahul spent every minute after IPL preparing for India vs England: Abhishek Nayar 'WPL will impact not only Indian cricket, but also Indian domestic cricket. It is very different from the first year in a WPL trial, where I felt many people were more touch players. (Now) You can see so much more power entering the game. You can see the girls diving around, throws are flat, throws are faster. There's enormous growth and that's not going to stop,' he added. Nayar, who is also on board the Kolkata Knight Riders coaching staff again, said his return to the franchise two days after leaving the Indian team showed that is where he belongs. 'KKR is family to me. Everyone throws his weight way too much around (the fact) that it's family, but for me, I think it's family because the speed at which I came back [to the team] was a testament to the fact that that's where I belong in a lot of ways,' he said.

No Chris Gayle, 5 Players From MI! AB De Villiers Picks His All-Time IPL XI

AB De Villiers played in the IPL with Chris Gayle for Royal Challengers Bengaluru from 2011 to 2017, and they both helped RCB reach IPL finals in 2011 and 2016. Legendary South African batter and former captain AB de Villiers played in a total of 184 IPL matches for two teams—Delhi Capitals (formerly Delhi Daredevils) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (formerly Royal Challengers Bangalore)—and scored a total of 5162 runs. During his IPL career from 2008 to 2021, ABD hammered three centuries and 40 fifties. The 41-year-old cricketer, who is one of the greatest players of all time, in a recent interview with Shubhankar Mishra on his YouTube channel, picked his all-time IPL XI. In his list of 11 players, ABD included five from Mumbai Indians and two from Chennai Super Kings. But surprisingly there was no place for Chris Gayle and Rashid Khan. Gayle played 85 matches for RCB in the IPL from 2011 to 2017 and scored 3163 runs. Rashid, on the other hand, holds the record for taking the most wickets in T20s. In the IPL, the legendary spinner from Afghanistan has played 136 matches so far for two teams and picked up 158 wickets. In addition to ignoring Gayle, ABD didn't include any player from the West Indies in his all-time IPL XI. In the last 18 years, apart from Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, Sunil Narine, and Andre Russell from the West Indies have played more than 100 matches in the IPL and made big names for themselves. ABD included former India and Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma as opener along with Matthew Hayden, who played 32 matches for CSK and also won the Orange Cap in IPL 2009. Virat Kohli was included as the No. 3 batter by De Villiers, and the highest run scorer in IPL was followed by Suryakumar Yadav at 4. Surya is the captain of India's T20I team, and in IPL 2025, he won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the season award. De Villiers included himself as the No. 5 batter, and he was followed by Hardik Pandya and MS Dhoni. Jasprit Bumrah and Lasith Malinga, who have only played for MI in their IPL careers, were the two pacers De Villiers picked in his all-time XI, and the two spinners were Yuzvendra Chahal and Daniel Vettori. AB de Villiers' all-time IPL XI: Rohit Sharma, Matthew Hayden, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, AB de Villiers, Hardik Pandya, MS Dhoni, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, Lasith Malinga, Daniel Vettori. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
