14 arrested following clash between two communities in Pudukottai

The confrontation reportedly began over a dispute at a petrol pump and escalated when members from both communities confronted each other again in a nearby residential area. The altercation resulted in multiple injuries on both sides.
During the incident, a hut belonging to Dalit family and a two-wheeler were allegedly set on fire by miscreants. A video of the burning hut has since gone viral on social media.
Alangudi police have arrested 14 individuals from both communities in connection with the violence. The injured have been admitted to Alangudi Government Hospital for treatment.
Pudukkottai Superintendent of Police Abhishek Gupta, and Tamil Nadu Law Minister S. Regupathy visited the spot late on Monday (May 5) night, following which the situation was brought under control. Police personnel have since been deployed in Vadakadu to prevent further tensions.
In a press release, the Pudukkottai police on Tuesday (May 6, 2025) said the clash began over a verbal dispute at a petrol station between intoxicated youth from both communities. A hut was set afire and a government bus window was damaged during the confrontation. An investigation is underway.
The police alleged misinformation was being spread on social media about the incident and warned legal action will be taken against those involved in doing so.

UP Dalit girl found dead, 4 neighbours booked for murder and sexual assault: police
Four people have been booked for allegedly sexually assaulting and killing a minor Dalit girl, whose body was found hanging at her home in Uttar Pradehs's Ballia district, police said, adding that the girl was a witness in a molestation case filed by her sister-in-law last year. The police said all four accused named in the FIR were the girl's neighbours and that one of them was named in the molestation case as well. The other three accused are his close friends and a relative. 'No arrests have been made so far. The investigation is ongoing,' said a police officer. According to officials, the police received information on Saturday about the body of a minor girl found at her home. Locals protested alleging that the girl was gang-raped and murdered by four men from the village and that one of them was accused in the earlier case. The girl's family alleged that the accused had been threatening the girl to give a statement in his favour in the earlier case. Om Prakash Singh, Superintendent of Police, Ballia, said no external injuries were found on the girl's body and that the postmortem report confirmed death by hanging. During the preliminary inquiry, the police found that the initial information about the girl's death was given by a local man who is one of the accused in the molestation case filed by her sister-in-law. The police said all those accused in the molestation case were out on bail. The girl's statement in that case was yet to be recorded in court.

Faridabad Dalit youth assault: Family cries foul after hospital discharges him without further treatment
The family of a Faridabad Dalit youth who was allegedly brutally assaulted and forcefully tonsured last month has claimed that he was discharged from a private hospital despite having serious injuries, including a fracture and internal bleeding, without surgery or additional treatment. 'They asked us to arrange two bottles of blood, which we did. And now, without any surgery, operation or further treatment, they discharged him, saying there is no approval (to bear the costs of treatment). How can this be?' asked Suraj, the cousin of Sahil, 18, who had to return home Thursday evening while still nursing a fracture, internal bleeding, and injury to the soft tissue in the occipital part of the brain, as documented in the discharge summary. After Suraj, 32, lodged a complaint last month, the Faridabad police arrested the 19-year-old prime accused and apprehended two of his minor accomplices. On June 26, Sahil was shifted from the Badshah Khan civil hospital to a private hospital. Faridabad district Chief Medical Officer Dr Jayant Ahuja said this was done with the family's approval for better treatment. 'The deputy commissioner and the CMO helped facilitate the transfer. But now, he has been released while still wounded and hurt,' Suraj said. The discharge summary, accessed by The Indian Express, also notes an episode of vomiting with blood, swelling across the body, high creatinine levels, anaemia and chronic kidney disease. 'He needs more intensive treatment. His ribs are also damaged. I think this might be a way to get the attempt to murder charge in the FIR dropped (by the accused with connivance of authorities),' Suraj added. When contacted, the private hospital said the teen was admitted under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, and was discharged after a dialysis was carried out by the nephrology department. After Sahil had returned home limping after the assault, the family alleged the accused had hurled casteist slurs at Sahil. In his complaint, Suraj alleged the four accused 'kept the teenager hostage in a room… cut his hair, eyebrows, moustache and beard, turned him upside down and beat him with sticks and an iron rod'. The police, however, earlier said there is no caste angle. The FIR, though, invokes the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act, among other charges. Sahil's family is from the Jatav caste. The medico-legal report found the teen had sustained 12 wounds, 10 of which were blunt force impact ones needing orthopaedic assessment, and two 'simple' ones caused by a sharp object.
