Amritsar-Kolkata Industrial Corridor project: Farmers fume as cheques for land compensation bounce
Farmers are agitated in Patiala after compensation cheques issued by the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA) for land acquired under the Amritsar-Kolkata Industrial Corridor (AKIC) project bounced multiple times.
The AKIC is a major development initiative, with a significant portion of it passing through Punjab. Specifically, an integrated manufacturing cluster (IMC) is being developed in Rajpura-Patiala, as part of the AKIC. This IMC aims to attract investment and create jobs in sectors like e-mobility, food processing, and more.
The cheques, issued in March as a payment for nearly 61 acres of land acquired across five villages, have now bounced three times, leaving the affected farmers angry and financially distressed. Despite PUDA having already taken possession of the land, compensation remains elusive.
Randhir Singh, a farmer from Pabra village, voiced his frustration: 'The cheque given to me by PUDA has bounced three times. I even tried to deposit it again yesterday — it was rejected once more. This is nothing short of harassment. First, they took our land, and now they refuse to pay us.' He added that his attempts to contact officials have been ignored.
Labh Singh, another aggrieved farmer, echoed the similar sentiment: 'My cheque bounced too. The government has our land. What are we supposed to do now? Where do we go?'
Farmer leader Gurdhiyan Singh from BKU (Ekta Bhateri Kalan) condemned the situation, calling it 'outright harassment'.
'We will meet the Patiala deputy commissioner. The government must act quickly to disburse the compensation and take strict action against those responsible,' he said.
When contacted, PUDA land acquisition collector Sanjeev Kumar attributed the issue to a 'technical glitch at the bank's end'.
'There is no shortage of funds. The issue is being looked into and will be resolved soon,' he said.

Farm groups urge government to exclude all aspects of agriculture from the India-US trade deal
NEW DELHI: As India-US trade talks enter final stage, a network of farmer organisations has written to Union commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal, urging him to exclude all aspects of agriculture from the trade deal with the US to protect the interests of Indian farmers, ensuring the country's food sovereignty and security, and safeguarding the vitality of India's rural economy. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'Allowing heavily subsidized US imports into India would undermine our long-standing position at the World Trade Organization (WTO) against these very subsidies. More critically, it could flood our markets with cheap, subsidized products, destabilizing domestic prices and severely harming our farmers,' said the Indian Coordination Committee of Farmers Movements (ICCFM), including various factions of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) of different states, in its letter to Goyal on late Tuesday. The letter, signed by general secretary of the ICCFM and BKU Yudhvir Singh and national spokesperson of the BKU Rakesh Tikait, flagged how any deal granting duty-free or low tariff access to the US agricultural products will negatively impact India farmers who produce maize, soybean, pulses, cotton and fruits & nuts. Similarly, it also underlined the impact of such trade deals on the Indian dairy sector and cited a recent report by the SBI that cautioned that the opening of India's dairy sector to the US imports could result in an annual loss of more than Rs 1 lakh crore to dairy farmers. The farm network also flagged the threat of transgenic produce, pointing out that much of the American agricultural produces are transgenic and import of any such products into India - be it corn, soy, canola, cotton or apples - would be unacceptable due to biosafety concerns. 'If the Indian government moves forward with trade deals that overlook critical issues affecting our farmers, movements like ours will be compelled to intensify our protests against such anti-farmer policies,' said the farmer representatives.

Govt set to amend Banur Master Plan, convert agricultural land to residential zone
Mohali: In a push towards urban expansion, the Punjab government is set to amend Banur Master Plan by converting large sections of agricultural land into residential zones. The change is proposed for several villages under the revenue estate of Banur and is currently open to public objections. The Directorate of Town and Country Planning, Punjab, has proposed the amendments in the 'Proposed Land Use Plan, Banur', which will reclassify agricultural areas as residential in villages including Naugiari, Giga Majra, Hulka, Kalauli, Menda Majra, Mote Majra, Nadiali, Manakpur Kallar, Kurara, Tangori, Jhansli, and Sekhan Majra. Sources in the directorate confirmed that the amendment will divide the township into four distinct residential zones and will be implemented in a phased manner. The move comes in response to numerous representations submitted by gram panchayats and villagers of the mentioned villages, who have requested the government to reclassify their land to facilitate residential development. The current Banur Master Plan was notified on May 25, 2010. However, with the region witnessing increasing urbanisation and infrastructure development, the demand for residential zoning has grown significantly. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Se você sofre com dores no joelho.
