IOA Conflict Nears Resolution As EC Members Prepare To Ratify CEO Appointment
The Indian Olympic Association's power struggle nears resolution as EC members plan to ratify Raghuram Iyer's CEO appointment, ending discord with President PT Usha.
A long-standing power struggle within the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) appears to be approaching resolution. The majority of Executive Council (EC) members—who have been at odds with IOA President PT Usha—are expected to ratify the appointment of Raghuram Iyer as CEO, a move that could signal the end of months of internal discord.
The conflict stems from Usha's January 2024 appointment of Iyer as CEO, which faced resistance from EC members due to the Rs 20 lakh per month salary proposed for the position, along with additional perks. The EC refused to endorse the appointment, leading to a stalemate that stalled IOA operations.
Despite a stormy Executive Council meeting in September 2024, attended virtually by a representative of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), no breakthrough was achieved at the time.
According to a source familiar with the situation, the sports ministry has played a key role in facilitating a resolution.
'The EC members have agreed to ratify Iyer's appointment and it's likely to be announced on Thursday," the source told PTI.
In preparation, the EC members plan to hold an informal meeting on Wednesday evening, followed by a joint press conference on Thursday, where both Usha and most EC members are expected to appear.
A Rapprochement in the Works
An EC member emphasized the need for a functional relationship moving forward:
'There will have to be at least a working relationship [between Usha and the EC members], so a rapprochement process has started," the member said.
'We are doing it for the good of Indian sport, especially in view of the fact that we are hoping to host the 2036 Olympics."
Administrative Paralysis and IOC Pressure
The internal conflict has severely hampered the IOA's operations. There has been no Executive Council meeting since September 2024 and no Annual General Body Meeting since March 2023.
Following PT Usha's election as IOA president, the association delayed the appointment of a CEO, a position mandated by its constitution. The delay prompted repeated warnings from the IOC, eventually leading to Iyer's appointment. However, 12 EC members refused to ratify the decision, leading to a prolonged deadlock.
Usha had previously stated that Iyer had been working without pay, as his appointment remained unratified.

Steeplechaser Ankita Dhyani came up with a blistering run to clinch silver in the gruelling 3000m event with a personal-best time of 9:31.99 seconds, while the men's 4x100m relay quartet bagged a bronze as Indian athletes ended their campaign in the World University Games on Sunday (July 27, 2025). Adia Budde of Germany took the bronze, clocking 9:33.34 seconds. On Friday, Ankita had topped Heat 1 by clocking 9:54.79 seconds and secured her place in the final. It was a massive 22-second improvement, which propelled Ankita to second place in the competitive race. Ankita remained in the top-five through most of the race and came up with a breathtaking sprint in the final 300 metres to almost catch up with the German before missing the gold by just 0.13 seconds. The men's 4x100m relay team, comprising Lalu Prasad Bhoi, Animesh Kujur, Manikanta Hoblidhar and Mrutyam Jayaram, clocked 38.89 seconds to take the bronze. South Korea took the gold in 38.50 seconds, while South Africa (38.80) bagged the silver. The Indian women's 4x400m relay team came up with a season's best time of 3:35.08 seconds, but it was not good enough for a medal, as the quartet of Anakha Bijukumar, Devyaniba Zala, Rashdeep Kaur and Rupal finished fifth, clocking 3:35.08 seconds. The German team, despite a poor reaction time, won the gold with a time of 3:29.68 seconds. ENG vs IND, fourth Test: Jadeja, Washington refuse Ben Stokes' offer to call off match before start of mandatory overs
Drama unfolded in the high-intensity Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in Manchester on Sunday (July 27, 2025) after Indian batters Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar refused England skipper Ben Stokes' offer to call off the fourth Test and settle for a draw before the start of the final hour of play. There is a provision that allows both captains to shake hands and agree to a draw if they feel that the possibility of a result is impossible. Having worked hard to earn a creditable draw, Jadeja and Washington, batting on 89 and 80 respectively, refused Stokes' offer after he had approached the umpire, which irked the England skipper no end. With both approaching their hundreds after having saved the match for India who started their second innings 311 runs in arrears, Jadeja and Washington exercised their rights to continue batting. India coach Gautam Gambhir and skipper Shubman Gill backed the decision to carry on batting. "If someone is batting on 90 and the other one is batting on 85, don't they deserve a hundred? Would they have walked off if someone from England's side would have been batting on 90 or 85? "If someone has the opportunity to get his first Test hundred, won't you allow him to do it? They weathered the storm. It's up to them," Gambhir said at the post-match press conference. "If they want to play that way, that's up to them. I've got nothing more to say. I think both those guys deserved a hundred, and fortunately they got it." On his part, Gill said, "It was up to the boys and both of them were in their 90s, they deserved to score centuries." 3 killed as gunmen fire at protesters in Pakistans Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province
Peshawar, Jul 27 (PTI) Unknown gunmen fired at a gathering protesting against counter-terrorism operations in Pakistan's northwestern province Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday, leaving three dead and many injured, a top official said. A day earlier, a mortar strike claimed the life of a girl in the Zakha Khel area of the Khyber District, sparking the Sunday demonstration, during which locals placed the girl's body in front of the Momand Ghuz security checkpoint. Suhail Afridi, the special assistant to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister, said three people died and eight were injured in the firing by terrorists on the demonstrators in the Tirah Valley. Following the incident, the grieving families and residents of the area staged a protest by blocking the Tank-South Waziristan Road, and demanded immediate identification and action against those responsible for the killings. Afridi said, 'Following the girl's death on Saturday, locals staged a protest in front of the Frontier Corps compound today. They had gathered near he gates when shots were fired." 'I spoke to district officials who told me that terrorists belonging to Fitna-al-Khawarij fired at the protesters," he said, using the term designating members of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province expressed deep sorrow and regret over the Tirah incident.
