Sam Bachman throwing error in 10th inning seals Angels' loss to Blue Jays
Straw, the automatic runner, scored from second when Bachman fielded Ernie Clement's sacrifice bunt and overthrew first base.
Bachman (1-2) entered in the 10th and walked leadoff hitter Nathan Lukes, putting runners on first and second with nobody out for Clement.
Chad Green (3-2) worked a scoreless inning for the win.
Jo Adell tied it for the Angels with a three-run homer in the seventh.
Andrés Giménez drove in the first run with a single for Toronto in the sixth. Giménez advanced to third on George Springer's single before leaving with an ankle injury.
Giménez tweaked his left ankle covering second base on a steal Wednesday and did not play Thursday. He was scheduled for an MRI.
Blue Jays left-hander Eric Lauer set down his first 12 batters before Adell doubled to begin the fifth. Adell was initially called out trying to advance but the Angels challenged and the call was overturned following a replay review.
Giménez hit Adell in the face trying to tag him out at second. Adell was treated on the field and remained in the game.
Toronto's Will Wagner doubled to open the sixth and advanced on a sacrifice before scoring on Giménez's hit.
José Fermin replaced Angels starter Kyle Hendricks after Springer's single. Bo Bichette hit an RBI single and another run scored when shortstop Zach Neto bobbled Addison Barger's grounder for an error.
Mike Trout and Taylor Ward chased Lauer with back-to-back singles to begin the seventh, and the Angels tied it when Adell greeted reliever Nick Sandlin with his 19th homer.
Bachman's high throw sparked a celebration at home plate as Toronto improved to 30-16 at home.
The Angels faced the Blue Jays on Independence Day for the eighth time, going 4-4 in those meetings.
Blue Jays RHP Max Scherzer (0-0, 4.85 ERA) is scheduled to start Saturday against Angels RHP Jack Kochanowicz (3-8, 5.44).

Germany captain Giulia Gwinn to miss rest of Euro 2025 with knee injury
ST. GALLEN, Switzerland (AP) — Germany captain Giulia Gwinn has been ruled out of the rest of the Women's European Championship with a knee injury. The German soccer federation said Saturday that the 26-year-old Gwinn sustained 'a medial ligament injury in her left knee' and 'is expected to be out for several weeks.' Gwinn injured the knee while a making a likely goal-saving tacking on Poland captain Ewa Pajor during Germany's 2-0 win on Friday. She had to be supported off the field in tears after getting hugs from teammates. Gwinn had an MRI in Zurich on Saturday to determine the extent of the injury. The federation said it will not be calling up a replacement for the Germany right back 'as UEFA regulations only allow an outfield player to be substituted for medical reasons up to 24 hours before the first match-day.' At least the injury was less serious than had initially been feared as Gwinn avoided another anterior cruciate ligament tear. Gwinn has previously torn the ACL in both knees, and missed the 2023 World Cup while she recovered from the second cruciate injury. Gwinn tore the ACL in her right knee in a European qualifier against Ireland in September 2020, then suffered the same injury again in her left knee while training with Germany in October 2022. 'We all know Giulia's history. We're all, all of us, keeping our fingers crossed that it's nothing so serious,' Germany vice-captain Janina Minge had said. 'We have to stand together as a team, to stand with her and hope for the best.' Jule Brand, who scored one goal and set up the other on Friday, said Gwinn's injury was a 'shock for us all. Conor McGregor offers to fight at potential UFC White House event while Jon Jones shows interest
President Donald Trump's idea of hosting a UFC event at the White House next Fourth of July already has some volunteers for the potential main event. Buster Posey (2012) is the last catcher to win an MVP. National League: Shohei Ohtani has won twice in a row unanimously, in 2023 for the Angels and 2024 for the Dodgers. Now he's pitching again. But he is out for the season after having hip surgery during spring training. That makes Bryant the choice. He played 11 games and hit .154 before going on the IL with back pain. Bryant has been a negative 1.6 bWAR player in four seasons since agreeing to a seven-year, $182 million deal before the 2022 season. Xander Bogaerts has a terrible 11-year, $280 million contract but at least he has given the Padres 6.6 bWAR and played 85 percent of the games since signing. National League: Paul Skenes (Pirates): He finished third as a rookie after making only 23 starts. Could a full season put him over the top? Skenes is 4-7 despite a 2.03 ERA. But voters in 2025 could overlook a losing record. If not, Zack Wheeler , Robbie Ray , or Andrew Abbott could emerge. Sigh Young: Luis Severino (Athletics): The righthander is 2-9 with a 5.09 ERA. He landed a two-year, $45 million deal as a free agent knowing full well the team would be playing in a Triple A park but has complained about it anyway. Related : Rookie of the Year American League: Jacob Wilson (Athletics): The 23-year-old shortstop already is an All-Star, so the odds are with him. Astros righthander Cam Smith and Athletics teammate Nick Kurtz are contenders, too. Could Roman Anthony or Marcelo Mayer heat up enough in the second half to have a chance? National League: Jacob Misiorowski (Brewers): The 23-year-old righthander has made only four starts but is 3-1 with a 3.20 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 19⅔ innings. Brewers righthander Jacob Misiorowski won each of his first three starts, including one against Paul Skenes. Kayla Wolf/Associated Press That makes him the choice for now but it's wide open. Braves catcher Drake Baldwin and Marlins catcher Agustín Ramírez are contenders. Advertisement Dodgers righthander Ben Casparius could get in the mix, too. He's third on the team in innings pitched. Manager of the Year American League: A.J. Hinch (Tigers): He inherited a program in disarray in 2021 and this likely will be the third year in a row Detroit will have more victories than the previous year. Hinch and president of baseball operations Scott Harris are good partners and have built a team strong on both sides of the ball. The Tigers always look prepared; that's the best way to say it. National League: Craig Counsell (Cubs): He's been worth the $8 million a year the Cubs are paying him. After a disappointing 83-79 season, Chicago is on pace for 97 wins. They have a lineup with power (third in the NL in homers) and speed (first in stolen bases). The pitching hasn't been as good but is better than last season. They need a starter at the deadline and are 'all-in' according to other teams. Mismanager of the year: Dave Martinez (Nationals). Martinez has the fifth-longest tenure among managers, having been hired on Nov. 2, 2017. Only Dave Roberts , Kevin Cash , Brian Snitker , and Torey Lovullo have had their jobs longer. Martinez has been riding the 2019 World Series championship for a long time. Through Friday, the Nationals were 145 games under .500 since and haven't finished higher than fourth place. It's not Martinez's fault that the Nationals went through a rebuilding phase that started with the Juan Soto trade in 2022. They also suffered through what proved to be some poor contracts — Patrick Corbin and Stephen Strasburg in particular. It's been a bad stretch for general manager Mike Rizzo , too. But as other struggling teams make changes, Martinez has held on. Advertisement Fire, man Chapman proving to be great pickup Craig Breslow . How else could you define it? Chapman went into the weekend having not allowed an earned run in 14 games and 14 innings dating to May 28. The 37-year-old lefthander allowed three hits and struck out 23 in that stretch. This year should produce his eighth All-Star selection, the first since 2021 with the Yankees. Aroldis Chapman has converted 15 of 16 save opportunities and is striking out 13.1 batters per nine innings. Barry Chin/Globe Staff Chapman is one of 14 pitchers with at least 350 saves. Within that group, only Dennis Eckersley has more strikeouts. Eckersley made 361 starts before he became a closer, so that number is misleading. He had 792 strikeouts in relief. Chapman (350, 1,297), Craig Kimbrel (440, 1,266), Lee Smith (478, 1,251), and Kenley Jansen (462, 1,249) are the only pitchers with at least 350 saves and 1,200 strikeouts. Related : Only Hoyt Wilhelm (1,363) and Goose Gossage (1,340) have more strikeouts in relief than Chapman. Is Chapman a Hall of Famer if he ends his career with 400-plus saves and the most strikeouts by a reliever in history? A few other observations on the Red Sox: ▪ As you watch Sox players repeatedly show little regard or knowledge of basic fundamentals, it's fair to wonder if an organization that saw the value in Dustin Pedroia back in 2004 would even consider him two decades later. ▪ Alex Cora is an excellent communicator. Consider his answer to a question about Masataka Yoshida taking grounders at first base the minors: 'It's something we asked him to do, and he was like, 'Yeah, I'll do it, right away.' He ordered his first baseman's mitt five minutes later and started taking grounders.' Did they communicate poorly with him over the winter? Sure did. Was it foolish to announce he would never play the field this season? Sure was. But when you have a contract worth $313.5 million and the chief baseball officer and principal owner ask you to give it a try, you give it a try. ▪ The Sox may have been too quick to give up on Quinn Priester . They acquired the righthander from Pittsburgh on July 29, 2024, and traded him to the Brewers on April 7. The 24-year-old is since 6-2 with a 3.59 ERA in 16 games (12 starts) for Milwaukee. Priester averages a modest 93.7 miles per hour with his two-seam fastball but has one of the best groundball rates in the league and doesn't give up hard contact. The Sox received two prospects outside their top 30 and what proved to be the 33rd pick of the draft. They need that pick to hit. ▪ Andruw Jones is putting together the roster for Netherlands in the WBC. He's hoping to land Ceddanne Rafaela to play center field. The Dutch have their pool play in Miami, where Rafaela lives. That certainly improves his odds. ▪ Mentioned last week that Mike Timlin was riding in the Pan-Mass Challenge in honor of Tim Wakefield . Here's where to go to support Mike: Meanwhile, Trevor Wakefield has taken up his father's legacy and is working at Fenway Park selling 50/50 raffle tickets to support the Red Sox Foundation. Keep an eye out for him at the park. Advertisement Etc. Kalish takes a different road Ryan Kalish singled off Max Scherzer in his first major league plate appearance in 2010. By the time that season was over, the athletic outfielder had 16 extra-base hits and 10 stolen bases over 53 games and appeared to be an important part of the future for the Red Sox. 'I'm excited to see where this goes,' Terry Francona said near the end of the season. But Kalish played only parts of four seasons with the Sox and Cubs because of injuries that required 14 surgeries. He retired from pro ball in 2018. Still, Kalish came away with a World Series ring with the 2013 Red Sox, having spent that entire season on the injured list. He also received a ring with the 2016 Cubs, having played seven games for that team. 'There was a lot of suffering, mental and physical,' said Kalish, who described visiting the Red Sox during spring training five years ago and breaking down crying when he saw assistant GM Raquel Ferreira . 'It's tough when you're 30 and not a lot a whole lot of people are checking in on you.' It's a familiar story, talent undone by injuries. But this has a twist. Now 37, Kalish is a successful real estate investor in Indonesia who resides in Thailand. He's also an independent humanitarian of sorts, visiting Africa and other regions to meet people there and help them in such simple ways as improving their homes with a few inexpensive items or providing free meals. Check out his Instagram account — Extra bases Alex Verdugo hit .294 with a .795 OPS over 199 games for the Red Sox from 2020-21 and had 4.4 bWAR. He also had an .835 OPS over 11 games in the team's 2021 run to the ALCS. He has since hit .257 with a .695 OPS and been worth only 4.2 WAR over 499 games. The Sox traded him; the Yankees let him walk as a free agent and now the Braves have designated him for assignment . . . The Pirates were 26-24 in their first 50 games under Don Kelly after Derek Shelton was fired . . . Javier Báez resurrecting his career for the first-place Tigers is a great story. But he shouldn't be starting in the All-Star Game as an outfielder. Báez has only 28 starts in the outfield and a .766 OPS on the season overall. The league average is .712. But good for Detroit fans getting charged up about their team and voting in three of their players. Báez started at second base for the National League in 2018 and at shortstop in 2019. As MLB's Sarah Langs noted, he will join Harmon Killebrew , Albert Pujols , and Pete Rose as the only players to start All-Star Games at three different positions . . . The Giants went into the weekend having lost 12 of 18 and that was with beating the Diamondbacks on Wednesday and Thursday. President of baseball operations Buster Posey took the heat. 'If anybody deserves any blame from the top, it should be on me. It shouldn't be on our manager or coaching staff. I'm the one who sets the roster,' he said. That Rafael Devers hit .210 with a .660 OPS in his first 16 games with the Giants sure didn't help . . . The Red Sox designated lefty Sean Newcomb for assignment on May 24 and sold him to the Athletics a few days later. The Middleborough native had a 2.33 ERA in his first 10 games for the Athletics. Newcomb has a 3.43 ERA over 60⅓ innings this season . . . Freshman Mavrick Rizy of Fiskdale and Worcester Academy appeared in 24 games for NCAA champion LSU, all in relief. The 6-foot-9-inch righthander had a 4.74 ERA and struck out 29 over 24 innings. Rizy appeared in three NCAA Tournament games and pitched 2 scoreless innings . . . Lefthander Patrick Clemmey (Bishop Hendricken) has de-committed from Vanderbilt and is looking for a new school . . . There was a great event last weekend when the field at Eastern Connecticut State was named the Holowaty Family Field in honor of longtime coach Bill Holowaty , who was on hand along with dozens of former players. Holowaty was 1,404-525-7 from 1969-2013 with four NCAA championships. He still holds the record for most victories of any coach in any sport in New England intercollegiate history. As a 22-year-old in his first newspaper job, it was a baseball education being around his program . . . A 1915 Red Sox team photo postcard sold for $165,600 on Wednesday via Bonhams. The card features a 20-year old Babe Ruth in the back row. Hall of Famers Harry Hooper , Herb Pennock , and Tris Speaker are also in the photo. Ruth was 18-8 with a 2.44 ERA that season for a 101-win team that dispatched the Phillies in five games in the World Series, beating Grover Cleveland Alexander twice. Ruth didn't pitch in the series as Ernie Shore , Rube Foster , and Dutch Leonard combined on five complete games and allowed 10 runs. The games in Boston were played at Braves Field because it held more than Fenway Park . . . Happy birthday on Monday to Chuck Goggin , who is 80. The switch-hitting utility player appeared in 72 major league games from 1972-74, the final two with the Red Sox. Goggin, a native of Florida, originally signed with the Dodgers when he was 18. He played two seasons in the minors before being drafted and served with the Marines in Vietnam for 13 months from 1967-68. Goggin was a Bronze Star and Purple Heart recipient. Goggin made his MLB debut with the Braves in 1972 and had a productive season in 1973. The Sox traded catcher Vic Correll to the Braves just before the start of the '74 season to acquire Goggin. He was sent to Triple A Pawtucket and was called up in September. Goggin played an inning at second base on Sept. 21 then came off the bench again the next night and struck out facing Mike Cuellar . Goggin never played in the majors again. He spent his time after baseball coaching and then had a second career as a US Marshall. He was the most-decorated Vietnam veteran to play in the majors.
