Euroleague boss ready to enter talks with NBA over new European league
NBA commissioner Adam Silver, speaking at a press conference on Thursday with International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Secretary General Andreas Zagklis, said the league felt it was " the time to move to the next stage" after having long considered opportunities in Europe.
"When they talk about big teams, big names, I cannot imagine this potential league without us," Motiejunas told French sports daily L'Equipe.
"Can we talk about the best product possible without the Euroleague teams, their fans, our market, the culture, the passion and the history that goes with it?"
The initial plan is to have a 16-team European league made up of 12 permanent clubs and four that would have to qualify on a yearly basis. The Euroleague features 18 teams.
Motiejunas said he was willing to enter talks with the NBA, even if the Euroleague does not seem to be included in the NBA's "exploration", although no firm plans have been announced yet.
"We are always ready to sit down and explore together the best solution to offer an even better product. We see positively the fact that the NBA wants to explore the European market with FIBA's help," he explained.
"I don't see this as a declaration of war."

As per Sky Sports, United are interested in PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Italian has entered the final year of his contract at the Parc des Princes, with the French side having signed Lucas Chevalier from Lille as a potential replacement. But Donnarumma could yet stay. A further year with PSG has not been ruled out and the Italian is in no rush to make a decision on his future. Benjamin Sesko U-turns over Man Utd transfer after Newcastle talks
RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko has opted to join Newcastle United instead of Manchester United, according to reports in Slovenia. After missing out on deals to sign Liam Delap and Viktor Gyokeres, United have made Sesko their top striker target for the summer transfer window. However, Ruben Amorim's side face competition from Newcastle, who are also in the market to sign a new forward due to the uncertainty over Alexander Isak's future following a £110 million bid from Liverpool this week. Reports this week had claimed that Sesko's preference was a move to United ahead of Newcastle this summer. But according to Slovenian daily newspaper Delo, Newcastle have managed to convince Sesko to make the move to St James' Park. Iurie Iovu knows where Dundee United priorities lie as he parks assault on Europe for Premiership opener
The Moldova international was the hero for Jim Goodwin's men in midweek Iurie Iovu insists the only Rapid that Dundee United are focused on is their Premiership start at Falkirk. Jim Goodwin 's side face Rapid Vienna next week in the Conference League but before then they are looking for a winning start in the league at the Bairns tomorrow. Iovu knows his new team came unstuck there in the Premier Sports Cup last season but will go with confidence after back-to-back wins over UNA Strassen. The Moldovan, who scored the only goal in Luxembourg on Thursday night, said: 'We need to focus on each match. We have a busy schedule, and we cannot think about too far in the future. 'Our thoughts are on the next game, playing well against Falkirk, to listen to the coach and prepare well for a hard match. 'When you are the favourite against a team coming up from the lower division, they want to show themselves and will give more than 100 per cent so we need to be ready for this and not underestimate them.' Falkirk have an artificial pitch but that is not something that will faze the big defender. He said: 'I have played on artificial grass in my career and it cannot be an excuse. It is the same pitch for all 22 players. It doesn't matter.' 'We must always give 100 per cent and show we are thankful for their time and effort to come here. But I am staying positive, trying to push and already thinking about the next game. 'We don't have time to analyse this too much, we need to improve and play well in the next game.' With two big European ties to come against Rapid, Iovu knows his team will need to up their game from Strassen but will go out to upset the odds. He added: 'We need to control the ball more and be cooler in possession. 'Rapid Vienna is a good team, I am delighted to have the chance to play against them. Anything can happen. 'There are lots of examples of smaller teams upsetting bigger teams, you never know. If you can show your qualities and give your maximum, all the possibilities are there.'
