Disney unveils new 'Avatar' and 'Star Wars' films
At Disney's D23 event in California, the company unveiled major updates for its "Avatar" and "Star Wars" franchises.
Oscar-nominated actor Ryan Gosling will star in a new "Star Wars" film, Walt Disney's Lucasfilm announced on April 17.
Shawn Levy will direct, and production will start in the fall. Levy directed Marvel's record-breaking 2024 film "Deadpool & Wolverine" and episodes of Netflix's sci-fi series "Stranger Things." Jonathan Tropper is credited as a writer for the film, according to IMDb.
The film comes as the science-fiction franchise has several other films said to be in the works, including the Daisy Ridley-led "The Rise of Skywalker" follow-up.
"Star Wars," created by George Lucas in 1977 and set in a galaxy "far, far away," has brought in more than $5.1 billion at global box offices.

When does 'Star Wars: Starfighter' take place?
"Star Wars: Starfighter" will take place five years after the events of 2019's "The Rise of Skywalker," a Lucasfilm statement said.
The movie is "an entirely new adventure featuring all-new characters set in a period of time that has not been explored on screen yet," the statement said.
The film stands alone from the new trilogy of "Star Wars" films in the works set to be written and produced by "X-Men" writer and producer Simon Kinberg. No new "Star Wars" movie has been released in nearly five years following "The Rise of Skywalker," which received mixed reviews and polarized reactions among fans.

What other 'Star Wars' films are in the works?
Several "Star Wars" films have been announced that are in various stages of development and may or may not actually make their way across the finish line. Daisy Ridley is set to star in a film that will see her character, Rey, building a new Jedi Order after the events of "The Rise of Skywalker." Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is directing.

"Logan" filmmaker James Mangold has also been tapped to direct a movie about the dawn of the Jedi, and Filoni is directing one said to "close out the interconnected stories" told in the live-action Disney+ shows like "The Mandalorian." A movie continuing the story of "The Mandalorian," titled "The Mandalorian & Grogu," is also on the way from director Jon Favreau and scheduled for release in May 2026.

Adam Sandler Honors Cameron Boyce In Happy Gilmore 2
In July 2019, Disney Channel star Cameron Boyce tragically died in his sleep at the age of 20, with his cause of death later being confirmed as a seizure related to his epilepsy. Cameron made his feature film debut at just 9 years old, when he starred in the horror movie Mirrors, which was released in 2008. However, he arguably got his big break with Disney, where he starred in the popular series Jessie, which aired between 2011 and 2015. He also starred in the Descendants movie franchise, where he played Carlos De Vil, with the third film marking Cameron's final performance before his tragic death. At the time of his passing, Cameron had been cast in Adam Sandler's movie Hubie Halloween, but filming hadn't yet started — and Adam was one of the celebrities who was left devastated by the star's sudden death. 'Too young. Too sweet. Too funny. Just the nicest, most talented, and most decent kid around,' Adam wrote on Instagram at the time. 'Loved that kid. Cared so much about his family. Cared so much about the world.' 'Thank you, Cameron, for all you gave to us. So much more was on the way,' he went on. 'All our hearts are broken. Thinking of your amazing family and sending our deepest condolences.' For reference, Adam had cast Cameron in Hubie Halloween after working with him on Grown Ups and Grown Ups 2 years earlier, where the young actor had played his son, Keithie Feder. And Adam was sure to honor Cameron when Hubie Halloween was released in October 2020, with the movie including a heartfelt end-credit dedication to the star that read: 'In loving memory of Cameron Boyce... Gone way too soon and one of the kindest, coolest, funniest, and most talented kids we knew. You live on forever in our hearts and are truly missed every day.' Fast-forward almost five years, and people noticed that Adam paid subtle tribute to Cameron yet again, this time in his movie Happy Gilmore 2, which was released on Netflix on Friday. In a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment in one of the film's early scenes, Cameron can be seen on a CRT TV that is playing an episode of Jessie. He is the only character from the show to feature in the chosen clip. Needless to say, fans have been left touched by this sweet gesture from Adam, and have praised how proactive he has been in keeping the late star's memory alive all these years later. 'Adam put a tiny Cameron Boyce (played his son in Grown Ups) tribute in Happy Gilmore 2. Excuse me while I sob 😭' one tweet that has been liked more than 23,000 times reads.'adam sandler found a way to have cameron boyce in the new happy gilmore :(' somebody else wrote, while another added: 'It's 10am and I'm crying seeing that Adam Sandler put a Cameron Boyce cameo in Happy Gilmore 2 😭'And one more claimed: 'adam sandler fucking loved cameron boyce like a son im gonna cry." ‘Fantastic Four' Steps Toward a Solid Box Office Start
Fantastic Four: First Steps came to a theater near you this weekend, and its opening numbers are looking good. Per the Hollywood Reporter, Marvel's latest earned $218 million worldwide in its first three days. While it's slightly behind expectations and the similarly solid $220 million global opening of Superman two weeks prior, this is already more than the 2015 Fantastic movie made in its theatrical run. Of its current take, $118 million came from domestic audiences, where it outperformed initial projections. According to THR, this has been one of Marvel's best domestic openings in years. Of the three MCU movies hitting in 2025, Fantastic Four had some of the biggest momentum behind it. Not only is it the first movie starring these characters since the aforementioned 2015 film, it's distinctly different from previous MCU movies as the first to take place entirely in a separate universe. Add onto that its collective star power and glowing pre-release impressions, and it seems to have generally stuck the landing with critics and audiences alike. Meanwhile, Superman's totals increased to $502.7 million this weekend, making another $44.7 million between domestic and international markets. Jurassic World Rebirth is now at $718.4 million after making an additional $13 million in North America. Previous World movies have made a lot of money and been some of the best-grossing films of their respective years, and it looks like Rebirth will be keeping that tradition alive. Genre-wise, next weekend is free, though Paramount's been putting a lot of weight behind its Naked Gun reboot starring Liam Neeson. (Which you might've gotten a trailer or ad for ahead of Fantastic Four.) The following week on August 8 sees two family movies, albeit in different forms: on one end is the nostalgia sequel Freakier Friday, and on the opposite end is Weapons, a horror movie about missing kids.
