But it came after he recently left colleagues in no doubt about his feelings on BBC director of sport Alex Kay-Jelski.
He was seen to snub his boss and made remarks about him in earshot of staff, it was claimed.
Gary was yesterday gearing up to host the football highlights show for the final time after 26 years — having quit amid an antisemitism row.
He started in 1999 alongside Alan Hansen and Mark Lawrenson and had been due to anchor the BBC's World Cup coverage next year after leaving MOTD.
But he took the decision to quit the corporation altogether after he was blasted for reposting a video on social media which criticised Zionism with a picture of a rat — used as an insult to Jews by the Nazis.
He has repeatedly apologised.
Co-stars and close pals Micah Richards and Alan Shearer were also seen arriving at the MediaCity studios in Salford.
Insiders said there was no love lost between Gary and his boss Alex, who took over the top job at BBC Sport from Barbara Slater last April.
A source said: 'By the end of Gary's tenure at BBC Sport he didn't have much time for Alex.
'When he was working on the FA Cup final, just two days before he quit, Alex came over to where Gary was and he just walked off without a word.
'He made a couple of remarks about Alex in earshot of people working around them. It's clear there's no love lost. Gary is really well liked and there are plenty of people who joked that they agreed with what he said.'

ZURICH, July 20 (Reuters) - England defender Jess Carter said she has been the target of online racist abuse since Euro 2025 began in Switzerland, and announced on Sunday that she is stepping away from social media for the duration of the tournament. "Whilst every fan is entitled to their opinion on performance and result I don't agree or think that it's ok to target someone's appearance or race," Carter, who is Black, posted in a lengthy Instagram statement. "I am taking this measure to protect myself in a bid to keep my focus on helping the team anyway I can. "Hopefully speaking out will make the people writing this abuse think twice so that others won't have to deal with it." The 27-year-old has started all four of England's games at the tournament. England play Italy in the semifinals on Tuesday in Geneva. FA CEO Mark Bullingham condemned the abuse. "Our priority is Jess and giving her all the support she needs," Bullingham said in a statement. "We strongly condemn those responsible for this disgusting racism." Bullingham said the FA has been in contact with UK police, who are in touch with the relevant social media platform. "We are working with police to ensure those responsible for this hate crime are brought to justice," he said. "Regrettably this is not the first time this has happened to an England player, so we had measures in place to allow us to respond quickly and where possible provide information to support any potential police action." While the England women traditionally take a knee before matches -- including their four matches so far in Switzerland, as a symbolic gesture against racism -- they will not do so on Tuesday. "It is clear we and football need to find another way to tackle racism, we have agreed as a squad to remain standing before kickoff on Tuesday," they said in a statement. "We stand with Jess and all Lionesses players past and present who have suffered racism," the team said. "Representing your country is the greatest honour. It is not right that while we are doing that some of us are treated differently simply because of the colour of our skin." Europe's soccer governing body UEFA said: "Abuse and discrimination should never be tolerated, whether in football or society, in person or online. "We stand with Jess," UEFA said in a statement.

Liverpool fend off Premier League rival in Hugo Ekitike transfer
Liverpool are nearing a deal to sign striker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt, with personal terms already agreed with the player. There have been several adaptations of Charlotte Brontë's famous 1847 novel Jane Eyre, but one in particular has left fans raving. The BBC's adaptation of Jane Eyre follows the early life of the titular character, who is raised as a poor relation in the household of her aunt, Mrs. Reed. Jane receives cruel treatment from her aunt and cousins and is put into an orphanage. When she is old enough to work, she is hired by the housekeeper of Thornfield Hall, Mrs. Fairfax, to be a governess for young Adèle (Cosima Littlewood) at the country estate. However, when she becomes entangled with the brooding master of Thornfield Hall, Edward Fairfax Rochester, his dark past threatens to destroy their relationship. The four-episode show, which hit screens in 2006, is directed by Susanna White and written by Sandy Welch, the Express reports. Ruth Wilson stars as Jane while Toby Stephens portrays Edward. The cast also features Lorraine Ashbourne, Pam Ferris and Andrew Buchan. The BBC series was a hit with fans and dominated the 2007 award season, scooping up a BAFTA and three Primetime Emmy Awards.
