73 Million People Watched This Teen's Churro Explode In Her Dad's Face — Here's What Went Wrong

Yahoo31-05-2025
This week in food news, a teen is making churros for Spanish class. I know what you're thinking: must be a slow news week. I thought so too. Until I watched the video about the classic Mexican crunchy pastry with a "surprise" center — and over 73 million TikTok views (and counting).
Meet TikTok user Morgan — the high schooler who just wanted to ace her school project by making homemade churros.
As the video's caption stated, it was her first time making the fried dough treat. She sat her father down to try her chocolate-dipped project, stating in American-accented Spanish: "a tiempo probar los churros."
Everything was going great… until her dad took the first bite on camera. Cue: the explosion. Morgan let out a startled laugh after her dad's first bite made a sound like a gunshot and bits of churro flew out of his mouth.
People's hilarious reactions to the video were probably a small consolation as Morgan and her dad cleaned up the dough shrapnel. One TikTok user commented: "girl, they said assignment, not assassinate." Another commented: "Spanish project or science project?"
The comments were FLOODED with more than just reactions — people were trying to figure out what happened:
And a few food science-savvy chimed in with their opinions. One user argued: "The churro exploded because steam got trapped inside the dough, and the pressure blew it up when it couldn't escape. Basically, [she] made a mini pastry bomb."
And yep — they're right!
Churro dough contains egg, which produces steam when fried. Another comment furthered the point: "That's why churros are a star shape with lines on them and not round."
If you looked closely, you can see this Spanish project is missing a key feature of most churros: the ridged edges:
Turns out those little ridges on the fritters aren't just for show. They increase the dough's surface area, allowing steam to escape, which is critical to preventing what happened to Morgan's dad.
Trapped hot steam doesn't just ruin the churro, it can also be dangerous. People in the comments were seriously worried about her dad — if the steam had actually burned him — so they made sure to give us an update video.
In an update video, the dad said, "I took a bite and thought my head was going to blow off.... I won't be able to taste anything for at least a year... my lips are burned, but I'm not dead."
Morgan laughed in reaction to the exploding churro, which could make you think it was some sort of prank. One commenter suggested foul play, saying, "I'm convinced there's a reason you didn't go first lmao." But the father was just an unfortunate snafu.
In the follow-up video, the dad said, "It was a total accident. 100%. We were both in shock... She's a good daughter." People were both wildly entertained by the update on the whole debacle and incredibly relieved.
No word yet on whether Morgan's exploding churros earned her a passing grade — but if viral views count, she's got an A+ in the bag!
If you're suddenly craving the cinnamon-sugary street food, but don't want to suffer the same fate as Morgan, check out our churro recipes by downloading the free Tasty app and searching "churro." Our "How To Make Perfect Churros Every Time" recipe tutorial is foolproof!
Ironically, we even have a "molten churro bomb recipe" — But, if it's Morgan reading this, mayyyybe wait a few weeks before trying out this recipe with your dad.

Joanna Gaines Just Shared a Glimpse Into Her Family's Dreamy Beach Vacation

This summer, Joanna Gaines and family have proven that they're absolutely vacation goals. The interior designer-turned-television star shared a handful of photos on Instagram from her recent beach trip and from the looks of it, Gaines and family had the coziest time in their temporary tropical oasis. According to the location tag Gaines used for her post, the family was vacationing in Sayulita, Riviera Nayarit, Mexico. Given that Sayulita isn't as popular as bigger tourist destinations like Playa del Carmen or Puerto Vallarta, the Gaines fam likely enjoyed an intimate vacay in the quaint beach town, which has become a popular surf destination. In the photos uploaded to social media, the Fixer Upper host can be seen taking full advantage of the beach home's infinity pool, which is mere feet away from the beach. One image shows her striking an impressive yoga pose at the edge of the pool and in another she can be seen taking a refreshing dip in the pool. The Gaines also noshed on authentic Mexican fare like fresh salsa and guacamole, played Spades, and enjoyed the occasional stroll down the beach. After the vacation photos were uploaded, fans of Gaines and her family were quick to show their support. "Imagine hating on them and they are doing yoga on the beach 😂," one of them wrote. "we love an unbothered queen," read another comment. Other fans commented on how deserving the family is of a little R&R. "Hope you have many moments of peace and joy. Well earned. I'm a fan of how creative, hard working, and authentic you are. ❤️," said one person. Cooked: Celebrated Chef exits new venture after allegedly balking at free food for influencer because she wasn't famous enough

A prominent San Francisco chef threw in the apron at his newly opened cafe after allegedly belittling a TikTok influencer during a tense exchange over her follower count aired out in a viral video. The incident unfolded Wednesday at Kis Cafe in Hayes Valley, when 'micro-influencer' @itskarlabb described how she had pre-arranged a collab with the restaurant's team and showed up early to film content, according to a video she posted to her platform. 3 Influencer @itskarlabb was allegedly belittled by top chef Luke Sung over her supposedly low follower count, leaving her running from his new California restaurant in tears. itskarlabb/tiktok The influencer, known as Karla, claimed that a man — later identified as celebrated James Beard Award-nominated chef and co-owner Luke Sung — questioned her 15,000-follower count and told staff it was a 'mistake' to invite an influencer so small. 'I know they're talking about me, because I can hear them saying 'TikTok, views, followers' ,' she said in a later video, which has racked up more than 20 million views. The influencer said that when she introduced herself, Sung grilled her over whether she had researched the restaurant, a wine bar serving small bites. She insisted she knew the menu and the vibe, but Sung disagreed and began scrolling through her TikTok feed at full volume within earshot, the influencer said. 'After scrolling like, two times, he says to me that he doesn't think my videos are at the level which he wants his restaurant represented,' she recalled. 'It seemed like he was insinuating that my followers would not be able to afford to eat at this restaurant.' 3 Sung couldn't take the heat after the pair's alleged exchange went viral and left his new venture. San Francisco Chronicle via Getty Images Sung then reportedly asked, 'Do you know who I am?' and told Karla he was a two-time James Beard Award finalist and that his daughter is Big Apple vlogger, Isa Sung, who has 600,000 TikTok followers. He also dismissed the influencer's cooking videos she posted to her platform, dissing them as 'homey,' Karla said. The belittling exchange left her in tears, she said. 'I told him I felt disrespected and didn't want to collaborate anymore,' the influencer said. Karla's follower count has since skyrocketed to more than 350,000 since she shared the story on TikTok. The influencer said she wants to 'be an advocate for micro influencers' who don't receive as many handouts. 'You don't need to have a million followers to be respected or feel like you're making a difference,' she said. 3 Kis Cafe, which opened in May, announced that Sung had left as chef and co-owner. FOX By Friday, Kis Cafe's was getting cooked on Yelp, where its rating plunged from four to five stars to just over two stars, and reviews for 'Isa '– a 'pioneering' Cal-French restaurant that Sung previously opened and named after his influencer daughter — grew with haters lambasting the chef for his behavior. Kis Cafe, which opened in May, soon announced that Sung had left as a chef and co-owner, later clarifying he had done so of his 'own accord' and was not technically fired. 'Our chef's behavior was unacceptable, and he is no longer a part of the team,' Kis Cafe wrote in an Instagram post Thursday. The restaurant said it has now temporarily closed to 'restructure.' 'We want to create a space that's welcoming and respectful to everyone. In this instance, we failed to do so,' Kis Cafe said in a statement.

See the Destiny's Child Reunion at Beyoncé's Final Cowboy Carter Show

THE RUNDOWN On Saturday night, Beyoncé thrilled fans on her final Cowboy Carter tour stop when she invited Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams on stage to reunite Destiny's Child for the first time in seven years. Fans shared footage from the moment on TikTok, which shows Beyoncé welcoming her colleagues to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas as their song 'Independent Women' played. The Renaissance singer called out, 'Destiny's Child, bitch!' The famous trio performed a medley that included 'Lose My Breath,' 'Say My Name,' and 'Soldier.' Rowland and Williams also joined Beyoncé for her 2022 song 'Energy,' finishing with her famous 'mute challenge.' As it finished, Beyoncé sang, 'Look around, it's me and my crew. Big energy!' The reunion ended with the massive 2001 hit 'Bootylicious,' before Beyoncé hugged Williams and Rowland and then waved them offstage, telling the crowd, 'Give it up for Destiny's Child!' Beyoncé welcomed a few other guests for her final Cowboy Carter tour stop, including her husband, Jay-Z, and country music star Shaboozey. She and Destiny's Child were last seen together when Beyoncé headlined Coachella in April 2018. The star shared a picture with her friends on stage from the night in which they're all wearing variations on a gold ensemble, including fringed and shimmering gold chaps. In the image, Beyoncé is smiling widely as Williams leans in to give her a kiss on the cheek and they have their arms around one another. The group rose to prominence in the 1990s and originally had four members: Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson, and LeToya Luckett. The group transformed into the better known trio including Williams, but then disbanded in 2006. They have remained supportive friends and fans have been hoping to see them reunite for years.
