Australia's ultimate gesture for India hockey great Manpreet Singh: Guard of honour, signed jersey on 400th appearance
June 15, 2015, marked another red letter in the illustrious career of Manpreet Singh. He became only the second Indian to play 400 international matches in the FIH Pro League match against Australia in Antwerp, Belgium. His biggest reward? The respect shown to him by the Australian players, who lined up along with the Indian players and gave Manpreet a Guard of Honour as he made his way off the pitch with a big smile. Generally, a guard of honour is given to an athlete playing his last match but Australia decided to bestow the honour on Manpreet on his 400th appearance.
Australian midfielder Eddie Ockenden, a proud member of the 400 club, which has only eight members, including Manpreet, also presented him with a signed Australian jersey.
Hailing from Mithapur, Punjab, a region deeply embedded in Indian hockey folklore, 33-year-old Manpreet Singh has been the heartbeat of India's midfield for over a decade.
Over the course of his illustrious career, Manpreet has helped India clinch multiple major titles, including:
4 Asian Champions Trophy gold medals (2013, 2018, 2023, 2024)
2 Asian Games gold medals (2014, 2023)
2 Olympic bronze medals (Tokyo 2020, Paris 2024)
2 Commonwealth Games silver medals (2014, 2022)
Podium finishes in the FIH World League (2014–15, 2016–17) and Hockey Champions Trophy (2018)
He has also been the recipient of numerous individual accolades, including the Arjuna Award (2018), FIH Men's Player of the Year (2019), and Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award (2021), among others.
Speaking on the achievement, an emotional Manpreet said:
'I still remember the goosebumps I felt in my debut game. To be standing here, 400 games later, is beyond anything I imagined. This milestone is shared with every coach who pushed me, every teammate who backed me, and every fan who believed in me when I needed it most. I'm still learning, still growing — and I play with the same hunger today as I did at 19.'
Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey, who himself holds the national record for the most international appearances, lauded Manpreet's consistency and dedication:
'Very few athletes achieve this level of endurance. Manpreet has been the spine of Indian hockey through its most transformative decade. His fitness, leadership, and composure under pressure set him apart. We are proud to see him carry forward the legacy with such grace.'
Manpreet's milestone day, however, did not change India's fortunes in the FIH Pro League as they went down 2-3. It was goals by Tim Brand (4'), Blake Govers (5') and Cooper Burns (18') that set up the victory for Australia, while Sanjay (3') and Dilpreet Singh (36') scored for India.

You scored 830 runs. You didn't score 380 in two innings — it was 830-plus. That's a lot of runs. So, where you needed strengthening was in the wicket-taking department, not so much in the batting,' Gavaskar added. Former England pacer Stuart Broad termed the decision to rest Jasprit Bumrah as a surprising decision. 'A week is a very good time off for a fast bowler. Bumrah's (Jasprit) omission does surprise me and what also surprised me was him saying before the series he will only play three of the five Tests. You keep those cards close to your chest and play each week as it comes. They will definitely want Bumrah at Lord's because of the movement you can get through the air, so can they risk him here?' "Cannot Pick And Choose": Ex-India Star Slams Jasprit Bumrah For Missing 2nd Test vs England
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has slammed ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah for missing the second Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Pointing out Bumrah's absence, Pathan said that he could not "pick and choose" on which match to play in a bid to manage his workload. The Indian team decided to rest the right-arm pacer for the game, considering that it is a five-match Test series in England. Ahead of the tour, India's chief selector Ajit Agarkar had already mentioned that Bumrah would not play all the five matches. "If you are selected in the Indian team, you cannot pick and choose (which match to play) to manage your workload," Pathan said on Sony Sports. "There is no other bowler like him, he is world-class. But here, you are not missing the match because of injury but for workload management. "Now Akash Deep will take his place and be expected to do well as soon as he comes in - and maybe he does - but any bowler needs time to settle in. That continuity is needed." Right-arm pacer Akash Deep got included in India's playing XI for Edgbaston Test in place of Bumrah. India made two other changes as Washington Sundar and N itish Reddy were roped in for Sai Sudharsan and Shardul Thakur. Pathan further spoke on India's dependency on veteran pacers Bumrah and Mohammed Shami. The latter has not been selected for the ongoing tour of England. "This is why I have been saying that Indian cricket has to start thinking about playing without Bumrah and (Mohammed) Shami. They have to start planning for playing without them in Test cricket," said Pathan. "The main fast bowler of the lineup cannot play all five Tests overseas, so firstly, India don't have Bumrah's services throughout the series, and secondly, his replacement, a younger player, is only getting a chance to play when he doesn't. So he does not have stability. "This is the only overseas five-match series of the new World Test Championship cycle. This was the series in which Bumrah was needed most. If he had a niggle or an injury, I would understand. But just to manage his workload? Then I don't think this is coming to India's advantage," Pathan added.
