British mum moves to Spain and can't get over school run difference

Daily Mirror6 days ago
A mum-of-two has opened up about her new life since ditching UK life where she 'worked to pay bills' and missed quality time with family. Now she and her kids enjoy a 'minimalist lifestyle' in Spain
With unpredictable weather and the expensive cost of living, it's easy to see why some Brits think about moving abroad. Spain is always a popular choice for relocation thanks to its great food, range of activities and, of course, sunshine-filled days. One mum has opened up about how moving to Spain has "altered her brain chemistry" as she highlighted the many things which are totally different from UK life.

The mum-of-two, named Becky, was fed up of working just to pay bills, being stuck with mortgage repayments, paying off her car, and feeling like she had no time in her day to spend with her family.

Fed up, she and her partner made the decision to relocate to Alicante, on the Costa Blanca. They sold everything and moved, and now they get to enjoy "family time every day" and a "minimalist lifestyle", Becky said.

Taking to TikTok, the mum said: "We sold our home of nine years. We sold nearly every single thing we owned. We needed to try for our boys. We were fed up of working to pay bills. We moved in with family - one bedroom for all four of us and the cat. We applied for our visas. Then the long wait began."
Becky has opened up about some things that are totally different about day-to-day life in Spain compared to the UK.
The mum, known online as @bex_from_rain_to_spain, noted that school drop off is a lot more relaxed in Spain. She said there are "kisses on cheeks from teachers" and "parents casually hanging around the gate". She also said there is "no chaotic morning rush" like often seen in UK schools.

She also said that local police help control traffic in school areas, and aid children crossing the roads. She did note that the eating schedules "make no sense" in Spain; lunch is at 2pm and dinner is at 9pm.
Now, after dropping their sons off at school, Becky and her partner are able to enjoy romantic walks on the beach. Becky also said after school time is different; she sees people go to the park at 8pm and it's "normal".
Brits who have also moved to Spain shared their observations in the comments. One mum said: "Kids' birthday parties that start at 7pm and end after midnight." One other commented: "I went to visit my friend in Spain and tell me why we were eating dinner at 10pm, we didn't finish until midnight."

Another said: "I love all these things about living in Spain, except the meal times! I just can't get in the rhythm! But school drop off is such a vibe."
One other said: "It's freedom and less stress for parents, our nervous system loves it." Another wrote: "Spanish school and the school run was the biggest culture shock for us too. I love it though...school just seems a little more fun here."
"We are moving this year, can't wait," added one other.
Becky has noted that the UK is more modern in some ways. She claims that you "need seven documents for one task". Becky said: "Life in Spain is amazing...but don't come here thinking it's plug and play. It's more...unplug, photocopy, replug, stamp and hope."

Shoppers cry ‘prayers have been answered' as Primark finally adds £20 item to rails & they're great for petite gals

FINDING the perfect pair of jeans can be a nightmare - especially if you're a shorter gal. But a petite Primark worker has insisted a new store arrival is the answer to any denim problems. 4 4 4 4 And with autumn on the way, it's the perfect time to stock up on transitional buys that can be styled with jumpers just as easily as cropped camis. The baggy low rise jeans, available in mid blue, come in sizes four to 18. Primark bosses say the loose fit jeans give "plenty of room to move" and have a cute detail for an "extra twist". In their online description, they add: "These jeans mix throwback utility style with a fresh, modern feel. "Made in a medium wash denim, they come in a loose, wide leg fit that gives plenty of room to move. "The front and back patch pockets are big and bold, with a utility style loop on the leg adding an extra twist. "Easy to throw on with a tee or crop top, these jeans bring a workwear vibe into your weekend wardrobe." The jeans are only £20 too, making them a purse-friendly addition to your wardrobe. With such a cheap price tag, it's no surprise that the new arrival has proved popular with fashion fans and staff alike. A 5ft 2in worker at Primark's Lincoln store modelled the jeans in a TikTok clip last week, showing they're the perfect length for shorter gals. I'm a size 18 & looked everywhere for the perfect grey jeans - I was stunned when I found them in a VERY surprising shop Alongside the video, the caption read: "We're rise jeans are here. "Who else has been waiting for low rise Primark jeans??" And shoppers seem just as excited by the addition to the denim rails, as one gushed: "My prayers have been answered." "Wait they are so cute", a second added. A third simply wrote: "Super." Meanwhile, a fourth chimed in: "These are cute!!!" Changes in store Primark is making some important changes to its kids' clothing lines following months of feedback from parents and carers. The high-street giant has announced it's making its clothing more inclusive, specifically for children who struggle with sensory issues. In a move to increase comfort, Primark is removing neck labels from its core kids' clothing and nightwear. This change means that t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, and pyjamas will now feature printed labels instead. Additionally, the retailer is introducing seamless sock options. With the back-to-school season approaching, more than 50% of Primark's kids' clothing will now be neck label-free, including nearly 70% of its pyjamas. The brand has stated its ambition is to continue increasing this number in the future, ensuring more comfortable options for all children. Top Primark summer buys IF you're looking for more Primark summer buys, then you've come to the right place. Shoppers have recently been raving about the new Miffy PJs from Primark. Others were desperate to nab the new leopard print nightwear. If animal print is your thing, you'll want to check out the new maxi skirts. The haltnerneck tops are perfect for summer. If you're on a budget, these trousers are identical to a pair from Zara, but without the hefty price tag. There's brilliant travel essentials for less than £10. And if you plan on heading to the beach, you won't want to miss these crochet bags.

I'm a single mum-of-7 to kids aged 1 to 16 – my ‘no spend' summer holiday days are made so much easier with a £5 B&M buy

Scroll down for the full list of places where kids can eat free this summer NO KIDDING I'm a single mum-of-7 to kids aged 1 to 16 – my 'no spend' summer holiday days are made so much easier with a £5 B&M buy Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A SINGLE mum-of-seven who is aiming to spend no money on some days during the school summer holidays, has revealed the £5 B&M buy that keeps her kids entertained for hours. Amy, who has children aged between one and 16, took to TikTok to share how she is able to keep her kids busy for a whole day without spending any money. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Amy is a single mum of seven Credit: TikTok/@singlewithseven 2 Her kids love playing with water blaster backpacks from B&M Credit: TikTok/@singlewithseven The single mum revealed that her bumper brood were "fighting like mad" during the morning of her no-spend day, so she got the little ones up and out of the house by half past 8. "We went for a walk for about an hour and a half and left the teenagers in bed", she said. After returning home, the younger kids played with kinetic sand for half an hour, before the family had lunch. After lunch, Amy took her younger ones out for another walk and her daughters decided to take their B&M Water Blaster backpacks with them. The nifty backpacks have water guns attached to them, so kids can have water fights whilst out and about. Amy said she got her kids' pink mermaid backpacks for £5 from the budget store, but online it currently looks like they are only selling Marvel water backpacks, priced at £8.99. Unfortunately, one of Amy's younger daughters was too small for the backpack, but she was happy carrying around a little spray bottle. During their walk, the kids also went to the park, and on a hunt for blackberries to pick. They managed to find a whole bush full of ripe berries, took them home and then gave them a good wash, before making a fruit crumble. The kids were happy and entertained for the entire day, and Amy didn't have to spend a single penny. I bought two splash pads from Temu and TikTok shop for £9.99 for my kids to compare - one of them is HUGE for the price The video, posted under the username @singlewithseven, has likely left many impressed, as it has racked up over 24,000 views on the video-sharing platform. TikTok users raced to the video sharing platform, to share how impressed they were with Amy's no spend day. One person said: "Aw I love this! "A no-spend day is so tough, you've done a great job keeping them occupied!" Savvy homeowner shows ‘best Ikea hack yet' as she saves almost £2k on cheap LED shelving & elevates it using £3 lights

DRAB TO FAB Savvy homeowner shows 'best Ikea hack yet' as she saves almost £2k on cheap LED shelving & elevates it using £3 lights Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A SAVVY homeowner has been hailed a genius after sharing what fans are calling the 'best IKEA hack yet". Gemma Markland, a home renovator who shares her stunning transformations on TikTok under Markland Home, wowed viewers with her ultra-chic built-in shelving display made entirely from budget buys. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 A Savvy homeowner showed off her 'best Ikea hack yet' Credit: Tiktok/@themarklandhome 2 She saved almost £2,000 creating her own built-in bookcase Credit: Tiktok/@themarklandhome Using two BAGGEBO bookcases from IKEA, which start from just £25 a pop, Gemma built a sleek and stylish LED shelving feature that looks like it came straight out of a designer showroom. She carefully positioned the flat-pack shelves side-by-side, then used thin wooden boards to frame around the units, giving them a high-end, custom-built finish. After securing everything in place, she painted the entire unit, including the added trim, so it blended seamlessly into the wall. To take the look to the next level, she added a clever lighting trick that set social media alight. The final result was a luxe LED shelving unit that looks worth thousands, for just a fraction of the cost. 'Everyone's been asking about the lights,' she said in a follow-up video. 'They're from Amazon, just £3 each. You peel the stickers off the back and pop them into the shelves exactly where you want them.' The tiny lights are USB-chargeable, so no wiring is needed, and come with a motion sensor setting to save battery. The lights come in warm white, neutral white or cool white. 'They're even dimmable. It's made this space look so much more luxurious.' I swear by 7 cheap hacks to transform a newbuild house into a home - your shoes will never be left in a messy pile again And she's not wrong. Similar built-in shelving features with LED lighting can cost upwards of £2,000 from furniture specialists, while even cheaper pre-lit versions retail for around £800. By DIY-ing the project, Gemma has saved herself hundreds and won plenty of fans online. 'I love this,' one viewer gushed. Another added: 'This looks so beautiful and creative.' A third wrote: 'Stunning, it looks really expensive.' Gemma's viral IKEA hack proves you don't need a big budget to create a high-end look, just a bit of imagination, some clever lighting, and a trip to IKEA. She's not the only nifty homeowner showing off Ikea hacks. A mum has given her son's bedroom the ultimate makeover on a budget. Nichola Ryan was able to give her son's tiny room the ultimate transformation and even make sure he had more space too, The mum took to social media and posted a photo of her jaw-dropping project on DIY On A Budget, a private Facebook group with 2.2 million members. The DIY fan showed off the new room which featured navy walls along with a wooden panelled feature wall. However, the room was so small that it was difficult for the mum to find storage solutions that would fit in it. Luckily, she stumbled across a hack that meant she could turn the bed into a storage unit as well. Instead of buying a brand new bedframe for the transformation, she instead headed to Ikea to pick up a Kallax unit. The cubed storage unit costs £50 and the mum picked up two of them to turn it into the bedframe. Elsewhere, a clever shopper explained how she took advantage of Ikea's Buyback scheme and managed to get £164.50 back for a set of drawers she purchased two years ago.
