All the Kai Cenat 2025 Streamer University Controversy, Explained

Cosmopolitan29-05-2025
It was nothing if not ambitious. Last weekend, Kai Cenat, one of the world's top Twitch streamers, took over a college campus in Akron to host 'Streamer University,' a four-day program that drew 120 students and 17 professors. All food/lodging expenses were covered by Kai, and each student was gifted a T-Mobile phone from which they could livestream their entire experience. Like real school, students could partake in semi-serious classes to prime themselves for virality (like 'Monetization for Dummies' and 'Defense Against Hating').
Also like real school, there was real drama, which is inevitable when you put a large number of young people in close quarters for an extended period of time (see: Love Island, any season). But unlike real college, the Streamer University students were fame-hungry and surveilled by hundreds of thousands of Twitch users 24/7. Thanks to that, we got a handful of meme-worthy moments, plus highly entertaining evidence that the creator economy is alive and well. So alive and well, in fact, that these participants were willing to commit to 96 hours of live-streamed dormitory life to succeed within it. Plus, the University of Akron was willing to loan their campus to a 23-year-old Twitch star to host this action. 'Our team is committed to helping the greater Akron community and beyond take advantage of all UA has to offer by hosting successful events on our campus,' said Brandon Alexander, the University of Akron's director of conference and events services. 'As we establish campus as an incredible option for large-scale conferences, it only serves to benefit the region.'
Now you may ask–who had the time to keep up with a round-the-clock production like Streamer University? And I have the same question. But I've made it my mission to figure out exactly how this whole Kai Cenat fest went down. So let's run back the most notable moments that transpired at the most-discussed fake college around.
From a viewership standpoint, SU was a success. According to Cenat's team, it garnered over 23 million total hours watched. The most-viewed participants included Kai (obviously), his Twitch stream regular/right-hand man, Ray, and the influencer India Love, who you might remember from her popular presence on Tumblr in the early 2010s. (We love cross-platform success.) In potentially less exciting news, the university's top-viewed channel belonged to 'professor' DDG, who was also named the weekend's MVP. Earlier this month, DDG's ex, Halle Bailey, received a temporary restraining order against DDG, alleging abuse, so the decision to name him SU's MVP was a divisive one.
Kai made the initial call for Streamer University applicants earlier this month via a very Harry Potter-inspired trailer. We were finally able to meet the inaugural class of 120 creators selected during an hour-long meet-and-greet video, which you can watch on YouTube (should you have time to spare). Here's a rundown of the weekend's top ten performers:
Is the route to online success predictable enough to build a curriculum around? The school's class offerings would indicate that. Students could take courses taught by 'professors' (aka popular influencers like Duke Dennis and cookingwithkya) on the following need-to-know influencing concepts:
SU was not without its hiccups. Before classes kicked off, controversy began to brew about admissions. The streamer Malik Richh hopped online to accuse Kai of favoritism, saying that he had a bias for close friends and established creators during the student selection process.
Some of the program's female participants were also subject to misogynistic claims from social media commentators, insinuating that their admission was based on looks alone. Despite that noise, SU was truly a win for the girls involved, with streamers like Primate Paige and Daejorno sharing their accounts' significant growth after the program.
Throughout the weekend, physical altercations also arose, a dorm room was trashed, and one student was even sent to the hospital after getting injured during a water gun battle.
In another highly-discussed moment, Drake's number was leaked during a livestreamed FaceTime call with one of the students, Tylil. He revealed the rapper's number to his audience by turning his phone toward the camera, which Drake took fairly well, telling him, 'You definitely leaked my number. Don't worry, I can get a new number tomorrow. It's a blessing in disguise anyway.' The rapper also sent in a congratulations message for graduates, which was shown during the commencement ceremony. So that's what you missed on Glee.
It's unlikely that everyone who's graduated from Streamer University can or will replicate Kai's unique success. This man has had stars like Tyla, SZA, Benny Blanco, and Kevin Hart join his streams and has (inadvertently) caused a full-blown riot on the streets of New York City. But if anything, the fanfare and intrigue around this past weekend's livestreamed programming is pretty indicative that we've entered a new chapter of online influencing. One in which authentic, no-holds-barred access to creators might take precedence over carefully edited content.
Kai implied that platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime were interested in buying the streaming rights for "Streamer University," but justified his decision to keep the operation independent on Twitch, with a strong message for creators. During a post-university stream, he said: "With an idea like this original, you gotta keep it where it's at. I want y'all to learn something, bro. [Your] channels, and who you are as a person… This [your] idea, this is [your] stuff. Treat your platform as you would treat other platforms."

"It was unfortunate": Ekin-Su shares real reason for Curtis Pritchard split in first interview since break up

After meeting in the Love Island: All Stars villa back in January, Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu and Curtis Pritchard decided to call time on their relationship in May. Now, two months on, Ekin-Su has opened up for the first time since their split, telling Cosmopolitan UK exclusively: "It was unfortunate." Talking about their time on the show, Ekin-Su gushed: "Basically, when you're in the villa, you're living your own reality, and you're able to give your time and attention to that one person." She continued: "And when we came off the show, we tried to keep that same bubble for ourselves. But what really happened was we were just so incredibly focused on our careers and when both people are focused on their careers, I think for us, we didn't want to end up resenting each other in the future, and we didn't want it to turn into something that wasn't healthy for us, because we do get along and we had such a good relationship." Asked the moment they realised it wasn't going to work, the 30-year-old actress and reality TV star explained: "Well, I was literally in the US a lot, and it was actually the time when his boxing appeared. I love seeing him passionate about something he loves, and he was the same with me. And I think with boxing as well it's intense training every day and you do need to focus on that on its own. Sometimes they don't see their wives for months when it comes to professional boxing, so it was hard to see each other." Unlike some of the other All Stars couples - like Grace and Luca, who have taken several trips together since the show, including to Italy, New York, and Dubai, where he asked her to be his girlfriend - Ekin-Su felt that she and Curtis hadn't been able to reach certain milestones in their relationship due to their busy schedules "We didn't see each other as much as we'd like," she said. "You know we never had the chance to really go away together and have our romantic honeymoon holiday that most couples did in the villa. So it was unfortunate." Ekin-Su, who originally appeared on the eighth series of Love Island, which she won with her ex Davide Sanclimenti, and Curtis, from the fifth series, met on the second season of Love Island: All Stars earlier this year. Despite a few wobbles along the way, they made it to the final and finished in third place, behind runners-up Grace and Luca, and winners Gabby Allen and Casey O'Gorman. Three months later, however, they decided to end their relationship, with Ekin-Su releasing a statement on her Instagram Story. "I wanted to share that Curtis and I have decided to go our separate ways. It's been really a tough decision, but one made with a lot of love and respect for one another," she wrote. "He's an incredible person and I'll always cherish the memories we made both in and out of the villa. Thank you all so much for the love and support over the past few months. We're both focussing on navigating the transition and would really appreciate privacy during this time. Love always, Ekin-Su xx" Curtis, who is a professional dancer and has recently got into boxing, shared a statement of his own at the time confirming the news. He said: "It's true, Ekin and I have decided to go our separate ways. Break ups are never easy, but I'll always be grateful for the laughs, the adventures, and the memories (especially the dance routines.)" Despite the split, Ekin-Su tells us that she and Curtis are still on good terms. "It was actually a really healthy relationship, and we brought out the best in each other, but it just didn't work," she smiled. "We entered it [the break up] in a way where, if you ever need me, I'm here, sort of thing. I was like, 'If you need me, I'm here. And he said the same. I said, 'I might need help in the future for dance moves. I'm gonna be calling you.'" This is Ekin-Su's second split from someone she met on the ITV2 dating show. She broke up with Davide in June 2023 after meeting on the show in 2022. Although they briefly got back together, they called it quits for good in January 2024. Davide is now in a new relationship with entrepreneur Iris Au and Ekin-Su was linked to Married At First Sight UK star Georges Berthonneau last year. "I have been on a few dates here and there," she revealed. "I was quite nervous, but I'm having fun. It's my Hot Girl Summer. I'm enjoying being single, but I'm also enjoying having a little flirt." She added: "I'm a lover. I'm a romantic. I wear heart my sleeve. So if I meet someone, I meet someone. I'm not going to say no, because I've just come out of a breakup. You don't know when you'll meet the one, but I am open." Could Mr. Right be just around the corner, Ekin? We hope so!

Nintendo Is Launching A Second Secret Switch Online Playtest, And We All Have To Pretend We Don't Know What It's For

Nintendo has announced a second round of its super-top-secret Playtest Program 'related to a service for Nintendo Switch Online.' This time there's room for four times as many applicants, a total of 40,000, for the playtest taking place from July 28 to August 10. If it's anything like last year, those spots will be snapped up in seconds. Last October, when planet Earth was losing its collective mind over Nintendo's refusal to give us any useful information about the still-unrevealed Switch 2, the Japanese company made everything even more confusing by announced a 'playtest program' for a mysterious 'service.' Everyone naturally assumed this would be something related to the upcoming new console. However, participants were under strict instructions to keep it all secret, so we still don't know was some sort of Minecraft-like MMO. Everyone leaked it immediately. Top secret testing program Nintendo remains just as enigmatic about it all this time around, despite the huge numbers of people last October releasing screenshots, and even streaming the product on Twitch. 'This is a test of the same service for which we performed a test in October of 2024,' the official site says, with the ambiguous severity of a government nuclear testing facility. And once more, the company impresses upon the 40,000 unpaid volunteers that they have to extra-double pinky swear that they'll not even tell their mom what it's all about. We learned pretty quickly last year that this is some sort of MMO, where players work cooperatively to farm and create on an entire planet. The game's leaked descriptions read, 'As you progress across the planet, you'll discover new lands, enemies, and resources that will be come essential to your journey.' Dataminers soon claimed that this was coming from Nintendo Production Group No. 4, the utilitarian name for the incredibly imaginative people who created the wonderful cardboard Labo products for Nintendo Switch. Nintendo obviously went wild removing copyright-infringing screenshots and videos of the project, but it was bizarrely naive to think that making 10,000 unvetted strangers sign an NDA would have any effect. Still, it's happening again, but this time with 40,000 people! For a chance to take part, you need to have had an active top-tier Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription on July 17, be over 18, and be in Japan, the U.S., UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Canada, Brazil or Mexico. It's open to both Switch and Switch 2 users. If that's you, you can then fill in the form on the official site, either as an individual or as a group, and send it in once applications open at 6 p.m. today, Friday 18 July. You'll likely have literally seconds to click—unless you're in Japan where they'll use a lottery program. Good luck! And shhhh, it's a secret. . For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The real reason why Love Island's Harrison has 'quit', following tearful breakdown and messy love triangle

Harrison has reportedly left the Love Island villa after a tearful week with Toni and Lauren. According to an insider, the 22-year-old footballer decided to leave the show after being involved in one of the most dramatic love triangles the show has ever seen. Harrison, who is originally from Derby, but relocated to Miami for his career, is said to have left the villa late on Thursday night and is on his way home to the UK. "It's been a momentous few days for Harrison and ultimately he has decided to quit," the source told The Sun. "Everyone was so shocked and people were crying and hugging him." "He worked through everything with the ITV duty of care team and is making his way home to his family now." Harrison has been involved in a love triangle with Toni and Lauren. He was originally coupled up with Toni, but recoupled with Lauren who he met at Casa Amor. His return to the villa with the new girl caused drama between him and Toni, who coupled up with Cach, and he eventually revealed that he still has feelings for her, leading her to pick him at the next recoupling and leaving both Cach and Lauren in tears. Toni then learnt that Harrison had slept with Lauren twice and felt terrible that she'd chosen him. He apologised to Lauren and agreed to let her crack on with Ty while he and Toni progressed in their relationship, but on Thursday night, Toni broke down in tears after she saw Harrison and Lauren in the bathroom flossing one another's teeth. Through tears she told him that he was "embarrassing her" and that he should have stayed with Lauren, before telling the girls that she's so "done". And things only got worse during the game of Couple of Sorts, where Toni and Harrison learned that they had been voted for by the public for the "couple who are playing a game", "the couple who are relying on physical attraction" and "most one-sided couple". From the look on Toni's face as they stood up on the podium, it was clear to see that she had checked out of the relationship. Cosmopolitan UK has contacted ITV for a comment. New episodes of Love Island air on ITV2 on weekdays and Sundays at 9pm.
