Playboy employee's mystery death explored in shocking new documentary as ex-boyfriend maintains foul play

Daily Mail05-05-2025
The mysterious death of Playboy casting assistant Kimberly Fattorini is put under the spotlight in a shocking new documentary, in which her devastated ex-boyfriend expresses his belief that there was foul play.
Fattorini died on July 21, 2017, in West Hollywood, California, from an apparent overdose following a night out.
While the date rape drug GHB was found in her system – as well as cocaine and alcohol – the coroner did not perform a sexual assault exam and by the time the cops requested one 'in light of additional information he had received,' it was no longer possible.
There was not enough evidence to file a criminal case, and the investigation was closed with zero arrests.
The season three premiere of Investigation Discovery's The Playboy Murders takes a closer look at the case and lays bare the murky holes, while Fattorini's loved ones share their doubts over the official cause of death.
Hours before she passed, Fattorni had been partying with Monica Maass and Eli Wehbe.
In her interview with detectives, Monica claimed that the group had gone to Eli's residence to take drugs and party and at one point, NFL player Shawne Merriman arrived.
She alleged that Shawne ordered an Uber to take the women to Monica's apartment where they continued to drink.
The following day, Monica claimed she discovered Fattorni dead on the sofa. She claimed Shawne panicked and fled the scene.
There had been accusations that Shawne had drugged and raped Fattorni before her death. He denied those claims.
In his interview with detectives, Eli also denied that Shawne had brought GHB to his house. Shawne was never charged in connection with the death.
Many of Fattorini's loved ones refute the idea that she overdosed and believe there were much darker circumstances surrounding her death.
One of those sceptics include her ex-boyfriend, former Playboy casting director Sam Rhima, who describes the details surrounding her death as a 'coverup.'
Speaking in the Playboy Murders documentary, he said: 'I know Kim more than anybody else. The only thing she would have done that night was drink alcohol.'
'Nobody does GHB as a party drug,' he adds. 'Nobody does a drug that's meant to date rape people.'
'When I found out there was GHB in her system, I knew that she was drugged,' Fattorini's friend and former Playboy model Tawnie Jaclyn added.
'I knew that was somebody else's doing.'
Addressing his heartbreak over investigation being closed, Sam added: 'I was shocked. I don't know who else was involved in the coverup, but there was obviously a coverup of what happened to her.
'I think no one got arrested because they'd spread all these rumors to make it look like she'd OD'd, which she did not.'
He went on to add: 'And I don't know how high the cover up goes or who else helped them cover up but more happened to Kim than what they're saying.
'I still can't understand why the sheriffs department didn't do anything about it,' Sam adds.
'Knowing what happened and what is right there in their face.
'How do you close an investigation on a girl who was obviously drugged, raped and kill. Why would you close an investigation on something like that?'
Fattorini's parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit in July 2019 against Shawne, Monica, and Eli, in which they cited battery, drug dealer liability, and negligence.
The lawsuit states paramedics found Fattorini laying on the floor unresponsive.
'She was half-naked with her jeans unzipped and unbuttoned, as though someone had tried to pull her jeans on to her body before the police or paramedics arrived,' the filing reads.
'Her bra was twisted and her lips were blue. She was also not wearing any underwear despite.'
The lawsuit is still pending.
In the litigation, Shawne, Eli and Monica each filed answers denying each and every allegation in the action.
They also denied that the plaintiffs were entitled to any damages.
DailyMail.com contact Shawne, Monica and Eli for further comment. It is noted that the trio declined to discuss Fattorini's death for the series.
At the time of its filing, reps for Shawne called the lawsuit 'baseless.'
They added to TMZ: 'Shawne attended an after party more than two years ago where a young woman unfortunately overdosed... The police thoroughly investigated and found no wrongdoing whatsoever by Shawne.
'The fact that they are raising this now, two years after the fact, demonstrates the baseless nature of these allegations.'
DailyMail.com contact Shawne, Monica and Eli for further comment. It is noted that the trio declined to discuss Fattorini's death for the series.
They've previously denied accusations that were connected to Fattorini's death.
In an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com last week, Holly Madison, the host and executive producer of The Playboy Murders, revealed why Fattorni's case means so much to her.
'This season, the one we're opening up with the Kimberly Fattorini case,' she said. 'That one really sticks with me. It was a case that was brought to our attention.
'As season two was airing we kept getting all these messages on Instagram from people who were close friends of Kimberly and wanted us to cover her case because they feel like it wasn't getting enough attention and that there were so many unresolved questions.
'There's still a pending civil suit going on regarding that case, so it means a lot to me to be able to bring that case to the forefront again, hoping that it might help somebody get closure.'
The Playboy Murders premieres on Monday, May 5 at 9/8c on ID and streams on Max.

Major breakthrough in burglary of Joe Burrow's $7.5 million mansion after shocking sports star robbery epidemic

New York authorities have made a major breakthrough in the burglary of NFL star Joe Burrow's home as a pawn shop owner pleaded guilty to buying and selling stolen items from athletes' properties. The burglary of the Cincinnati Bengals ' $7.5 million mansion, which was covered on Netflix's 'Quarterback' docuseries, occurred on December 9 while Burrow was on the road for a game against the Dallas Cowboys. The pattern of athletes' homes burglarized while they were publicly scheduled elsewhere includes Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, and NBA stars Luka Doncic of the Los Angeles Lakers and Mike Conley Jr. of the Minnesota Timberwolves. The pawn shop owner, Dimitriy Nezhinskiy, 43, of North Bergen, N.J., pleaded guilty on Friday to one count of conspiracy to receive stolen property in a Brooklyn federal court. He admitted knowingly purchasing stolen property, including high-end watches, jewelry and handbags. Nezhinskiy, whose sentencing date has not been determined, faces a maximum of five years in prison and restitution and forfeiture of more than $2.5 million. In addition, because he is from the country of Georgia while legally residing in the United States, Nezhinskiy faces federal charges and the possibility of deportation, District Judge William F. Kuntz said. 'This defendant ran a black-market pipeline, buying stolen luxury goods from organized theft crews that targeted homes and businesses,' New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in a news release on Friday. 'It was a deliberate operation that helped professional burglars prey on innocent people.' Co-defendant Juan Villar, 48, who co-managed the pawn shop, pleaded guilty in June to the same charge, per Friday's news release. The two men worked together between 2020 and this year, according to the release, as 'fences' to receive and buy stolen goods from outside of New York. Villar, of Queens, N.Y., also is awaiting sentencing. The news release said that South American Theft Group traveled the United States and targeted homes in affluent neighborhoods as well as jewelry vendors. The investigation involving multiple states has resulted in six arrests. Nezhinskiy and Villar haven't been charged with specific burglaries. Police searched the pawn shop as well as storage units owned by Nezhinskiy in New Jersey and found suspected stolen property including sports memorabilia, artwork and fine wine as well as luxury goods and clothing and 'power tools consistent with those commonly used in burglaries and opening safes,' according to the news release. Four Chilean nationals were stopped and arrested by police on suspicion of robbery. Police found the group in possession of LSU and Bengals gear, which is believed to have been taken from Burrow's home. Officers said the men were in the country illegally after overstaying their permission. Three of the men are facing federal charges for allegedly transporting stolen goods and falsifying record in a federal investigation. Those three are suspected by investigators of orchestrating similar robberies at the homes of Kansas City Chiefs stars Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes. In a shocking photo laid bare in court documents, all four men linked to the Burrow burglary could be seen posing in the jewelry they allegedly stole at his home - including the NFL star's personalized diamond-encrusted chains. Olivia Ponton (right) was the one who called the police over the break-in at Burrow's home They are understood to have made off with over $300,000 worth of his luxury possessions, according to federal prosecutors. Burrow addressed the robbery at the time, although he was clearly skittish about saying too much publicly. 'So obviously everybody has heard what has happened,' Burrow said in a statement after the robbery. 'I feel like my privacy has been violated in more ways than one. And way more is already out there than I would want out there and that I care to share, so that's all I got to say about that.' The incident was initially shrouded in mystery after it emerged that the 911 call was made by Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model Olivia Ponton rather than the quarterback's longtime partner Olivia Holzmacher. Although Holzmacher is no longer believed to be involved with Burrow, Ponton has stayed silent on her relationship with the quarterback, refusing to address the topic when asked by paparazzo at last month's Met Gala . However, the two were recently spotted out late in New York. Ponton - who boasts eight million followers on TikTok - is said to have told officers that she noticed 'a shattered bedroom window and the room ransacked' when she arrived at Burrow's property on December 9 . Burrow was out of town at the time.

BREAKING NEWS Andy Reid breaks silence on devastating Kansas City Chiefs setback before training camp

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has admitted he is starting training camp completely in the dark over the status of wide receiver Rashee Rice. Last week, Rice was sentenced to 30 days in jail for causing a chain-reaction crash that left multiple people injured on a Dallas highway last year. Rice was filmed fleeing the scene after the smash on March 30, 2024. While Rice has freedom on when he serves time, the ruling from authorities also clears the way for the NFL to ban him before the start of the 2025 season. But as it stands, Reid doesn't know for certain if Rice will be suspended, even though it is anticipated. He said he is doing his best to make it business as usual as his team reports for camp on Monday. Reid also has to consider that Rice is returning from an ACL tear that curtailed his season in the early stages last year. 'We're going to progress as normal with him,' Reid said on Sunday night. 'He'll go in and take all the reps that he'll normally take. 'We always rotate that position. Depending on what happens here with the future - whoever needs to play will step in and know what they are doing and be in good shape to do it.' Rice was accidentally injured by his own quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, in Week 4 of the 2024 campaign. Mahomes threw an interception against the Los Angeles Chargers and then collided with Rice when he tried to tackle Kristian Fulton - who, ironically, is now his teammate after signing for the Chiefs in the offseason. 'We'll keep an eye on that,' Reid added on Rice's knee injury. 'As far as pulling back because of suspensions or whatever, you know, we're going forward. And then we'll monitor him as far as (the injury) goes.' The NFL said after Rice's jail ruling that 'we have been closely monitoring all developments in the matter which remains under review.' Chiefs camp begins with testing and meetings on Tuesday, followed by the first full-squad workout on Wednesday, when temperatures are expected to hit triple digits. Rice pleaded guilty to two third-degree felony charges of collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. As part of a plea agreement Rice was sentenced to five years of deferred probation and 30 days in jail as a condition of his probation. The Dallas County District Attorney's Office said that the 25-year-old Rice also was required to pay the victims for their out-of-pocket medical expenses, which totaled about $115,000. Rice was driving a Lamborghini Urus SUV at 119 mph (191 kph) when he made "multiple aggressive maneuvers around traffic" and struck other vehicles, prosecutors said. After the crash on North Central Expressway, prosecutors said, Rice failed to check on the welfare of those in the other vehicles and fled on foot. Rice said in a statement issued by his attorney that he´s had 'a lot of sleepless nights thinking about the damages my actions caused, and I will continue working within my means to make sure that everyone impacted will be made whole.' His return to the field for the Chiefs, whenever it comes, is considered key as Reid and his men try and avenge their crushing Super Bowl loss back in February. Standing on the brink of an historic three-peat, the Chiefs were blown away by the Philadelphia Eagles, losing 40-22 on the night in New Orleans. The Chiefs open the season against the Chargers in Sao Paulo, Brazil on September 5 before a rematch against the Eagles in Week 2.
