Luke Humphries stunned by Gian van Veen in World Matchplay opener

Humphries was hoping to become just the fourth man to defend his title in Blackpool after he won for the first time in 2024.
But he was not at his best at the Winter Gardens and was downed 10-8 by the Dutchman van Veen, who celebrated the best win of his career.

Humphries' exit will make Luke Littler the overwhelming favourite for the event, with the teenager kicking off his campaign against Ryan Searle on Sunday.
Despite not being at his best, Humphries still had chances to beat Van Veen but could only convert 28 per cent of his double attempts.
Van Veen made his move to break at 7-7 and then eventually got over the finishing line on his fourth match dart.
'This feels like the biggest win of my career, to be here at the iconic Winter Gardens,' he said.'Finally I got that winning double and this is the biggest win of my career.
'I guess this makes me the number one seed! I am just going to enjoy this one tonight.
'It means the world, I felt really relaxed on the stage, to beat the reigning champion and world number one, it's an amazing feeling.
'Luke is a true champion, a great guy and the true world number one. To beat the world number one is amazing but it is just one game. I take it game by game.'
James Wade celebrated 20 successive years at the World Matchplay by coasting to a 10-3 win over Joe Cullen.
Wade threw his best-ever average at the Winter Gardens of 104.44, hitting 10 out of 15 doubles.
THE MACHINE MARCHES ON! 👏

He hit out at anyone who believes he cannot win the title next week, referencing an old spat with Sky Sports pundit Wayne Mardle who once questioned him.
'I can do it again, 100 per cent. I'm good enough to win this tournament. I mean, I think if anyone believes any different, I think they're a little bit Wayne Mardle-d.
'But I respect Wayne as well. I mean, Wayne's a wonderful person. He's got great knowledge of the game. I think he writes quite a few other players off.
'But I can win this tournament. Of course, again, it's no secret.'
Danny Noppert beat Cameron Menzies 10-2, setting up a second-round meeting with Van Veen.
Wessel Nijman ensured it was a perfect night for the Dutch contingent with a brilliant win over eighth seed Nathan Aspinall.
Nijman, on debut at the Winter Gardens, downed the 2023 champion in style with a 10-6 victory.

Defiant Benjamin Nygren delivers Celtic prophecy for Champions League after Ajax reality check

The drubbing from the Dutch giants has sparked some creeping concerns for the Hoops Benjamin Nygren insists Celtic WILL be ready for their crucial Champions League showdown next month. ‌ Ajax wiped the floor with the Hoops in Thursday's night's 5-1 friendly reality check for Celts with boss Brendan Rodgers admitted his squad is still short of what is required for the coming season. ‌ The champions kick-off their title defence to St Mirren in eight days and are four weeks away from a crunch clash to get into the Champions League group stage – with the draw a week on Monday. ‌ Nygren has hit the ground running following his £1.7m move and impressed in recent runouts against Newcastle United and Sporting Lisbon. And he is adamant Celts won't be caught cold for the big one. Nygren said: 'I am confident we will be ready for those matches. 'We have very good players and I have already seen in the training games that we have a lot of quality. It wasn't good enough against Ajax but we will be ready.' Nygren is determined to blast his way to the big time and the Euro theme tune would be music to his ears. He said: 'The Champions League is a huge ambition for me and one of those dreams I have. 'I want to play at that level and hear that anthem. I really, really want to take that step.' ‌ Nygren has made a slick start with Celts in pre-season and he admitted he already feels right at home. He said: 'It's been very good. I've only got very good first impressions of everything, the staff, the players and the whole organisation - as well as the fans. 'It's been easy to settle in and I've just tried to focus on my thing and showing my qualities and how good I am. ‌ 'I always feel confident of bringing that to all of the training sessions as well as the games I play. 'That's something I want to show so it's been really good and I am happy to be here.' Root's 38th Test century bumped him up to second on the all-time leading run-scorers list in Test cricket. But it was Stokes, 34, that hit the headlines after the ball caught him in his genitals. Stokes was batting when a ferocious shot rocketed between his bat and, well, found its mark. Cameras zoomed on Stokes writhing in pain, leading to a wave of sympathetic groans from viewers at home. The commentator said: "Oh! Movement, pain. He's been hit in the midships again." While Prakash Wakankar on comms joked about what the physio could do about it. The British commentator then added: "Sorry if you heard any expletives there, but perhaps you can understand why." Stokes, ever the warrior, eventually picked himself up, though with a noticeable limp to remain not out as England went 544-7 after the first Innings. England lead India by 186 runs with three wickets remaining. Meanwhile, Root pushed past Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting while scoring 150. It's now only Sachin Tendulkar keeping him off the summit. The Yorkshireman, 34, has a way to go to eclipse The Little Master's tally of 15,921. He needs a further 2,513 runs to become No 1 - but at the relatively young age of 34, Tendulkar's record seems achievable.
