Armed hero who confronted ‘wild-eyed' Walmart stabbing suspect describes how he ‘de-escalated the situation' without firing gun
Marine veteran Derrick Perry, in a Tuesday appearance on ABC's 'Good Morning America,' described the chaos that enveloped the Traverse City superstore Saturday when 11 people were allegedly knifed by Bradford James Gille.
'A lady was screaming for her son and all the employees and patrons were clamoring, trying to run in different directions,' Perry recalled.

When Gille fled out to the parking lot, Perry, along with others, dropped his groceries and surrounded the alleged attacker.
Perry, a hospital worker, pulled out his gun, but did not shoot Gille — even though he said others were calling on him to pull the trigger.
'Unfortunately, there was kinda like a mob mentality and some very disturbing things were being said on how to deal with the situation,' Perry said.
'I had to block all of that out and focus on him [Gille] because … I ultimately just wanted him to put the knife down and back away until law enforcement got there,' he went on.

'I did not see myself as any type of judge, jury or executioner. I just wanted everyone to be safe.'
Gille was rambling and appeared out of his mind, Perry recalled.
'I could see it in his eyes that he was wild-eyed and he did not look like he was in his right mind,' he said. 'And he was saying, 'They told me to do it. They told me to do it. And call 911.'
'I said they are on their way. They are coming,' said Perry, who described how he worked to de-escalate the situation.

'I took time to actually look and listen and try to understand his mind state, and see that, yes, I am in a position to do something very rash, but it's ultimately my decision to not do it as well,' he said.
'De-escalate the situation, try to get him to surrender on his own accord.'
Despite his brave actions, which ensured that Gille was taken into custody without incident and with no further injuries, Perry doesn't consider himself a hero.

'The only thing that separated me from the other gentlemen that had stepped in as well was what I was carrying in my hands,' he said.
'I think I would have ran out there or walked out there and helped either way. It was just a moment of, 'I got a duty to protect.''
Gille was arrested and arraigned on one count of felony terrorism and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder in Grand Traverse County District Court on Monday.
He is due in court again on Aug. 6.

Senate confirms former Fox News host Pirro as top federal prosecutor for the nation's capital
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate has confirmed former Fox News host Jeanine Pirro as the top federal prosecutor for the nation's capital, filling the post after President Donald Trump withdrew his controversial first pick, conservative activist Ed Martin Jr. Pirro, a former county prosecutor and elected judge, was confirmed 50-45. Before becoming the acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia in May, she co-hosted the Fox News show 'The Five' on weekday evenings, where she frequently interviewed Trump. Trump yanked Martin's nomination after a key Republican senator said he could not support him due to Martin's outspoken support for rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Martin now serves as the Justice Department's pardon attorney. In 2021, voting technology company Smartmatic USA sued Fox News, Pirro and others for spreading false claims that the company helped 'steal' the 2020 presidential election from Trump. The company's libel suit, filed in a New York state court, sought $2.7 billion from the defendants. Last month, Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee voted unanimously to send Pirro's nomination to the Senate floor after Democrats walked out to protest Emil Bove's nomination to become a federal appeals court judge. Pirro, a 1975 graduate of Albany Law School, has significantly more courtroom experience than Martin, who had never served as a prosecutor or tried a case before taking office in January. She was elected as a judge in New York's Westchester County Court in 1990 before serving three terms as the county's elected district attorney. In the final minutes of his first term as president, Trump issued a pardon to Pirro's ex-husband, Albert Pirro, who was convicted in 2000 on conspiracy and tax evasion charges.

Rescue workers in Chile find the body of one of 5 miners trapped in a copper mine
BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Rescue teams found a body inside a section of a Chilean copper mine that collapsed two days earlier during a moderate earthquake, the mine's director said Saturday. Rescuers have been trying to reach five miners who were trapped Thursday evening in the El Teniente mine in central Chile as rocks collapsed around them during a 4.2 magnitude quake. The copper mine is one of Chile's largest. A spokesman for the rescue team that is trying to drill through 90 meters (295 feet) of rock to reach the miners said the body found on Saturday is one of the five miners who were trapped in the mine. El Teniente Director Andres Music said authorities were still trying to identify the body. The body of another miner — not one of the five still trapped — identified as Paulo Marin Tapia was found Friday, shortly after the mine's partial collapse. Nine other mine workers suffered injuries, said Chile's National Copper Corp., known as Codelco, describing the incident as a result of 'a seismic event.'

Watchdog agency investigating ex-Trump prosecutor Jack Smith for alleged illegal political activity
BRIDGEWATER, N.J. (AP) — An independent watchdog agency responsible for enforcing a law against partisan political activity by federal employees has opened an investigation into Jack Smith, the Justice Department special counsel who brought two criminal cases against then-candidate Donald Trump before his election to the White House last year. The Office of Special Counsel confirmed Saturday that it was investigating Smith on allegations he engaged in political activity through his inquiries into Trump. Smith was named special counsel by then-Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022 and his special counsel title is entirely distinct from the agency now investigating him. The office has no criminal enforcement power but does have the authority to impose fines and other sanctions for violations. It was not clear what basis exists to contend that Smith's investigations were political in nature or that he violated the Hatch Act, a federal law that bans certain public officials from engaging in political activity. Sen. Tom Cotton, an Arkansas Republican, had earlier this week encouraged the office to scrutinize Smith's activities and had alleged that his conduct was designed to help then-President Joe Biden and his vice president Kamala Harris, both Democrats. Smith brought two cases against Trump, one accusing him of conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and the other of hoarding classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. Both were brought in 2023, well over a year before the 2024 presidential election, and indictments in the two cases cited what Smith and his team described as clear violations of well-established federal law. Garland has repeatedly said politics played no part in the handling of the cases. Both cases were abandoned by Smith after Trump's November win , with the prosecutor citing longstanding Justice Department policy prohibiting the indictment of a sitting president. There was no immediate indication that the same office investigating Smith had opened investigations into the Justice Department special counsels who were appointed by Garland to investigate Biden and his son Hunter. The White House had no immediate comment on the investigation into Smith, which was first reported by The New York Post. The office has been riven by leadership tumult over the last year. An earlier chief, Hampton Dellinger, was abruptly fired by the Trump administration and initially sued to get his job back before abandoning the court fight. Trump's trade representative, Jamieson Greer, is also serving as acting special counsel. Trump selected as his replacement Paul Ingrassia, a former right-wing podcast host who has praised criminally charged influencer Andrew Tate as a 'extraordinary human being' and promoted the false claim that the 2020 election was rigged. A Senate panel was set to consider his nomination at a hearing last month, but it was pulled from the agenda. ___ Tucker reported from Washington. Error!
