#SHOWBIZ: Jackie Chan mourns loss of Singapore-born food critic Chua Lam

HONG KONG: Renowned Singapore-born food critic, TV personality, and former film producer Chua Lam has died at the age of 83.
AsiaOne reported yesterday that his death was announced on his Facebook and Weibo pages on 27 June, with the posts reading: "Our beloved Mr Chua Lam passed away peacefully at Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital on 25 June 2025, accompanied by relatives and friends. In accordance with his wishes, no ceremony will be held, and his body has been cremated. Thank you all for your concern for Mr Chua."
Martial arts icon Jackie Chan was among several celebrities who paid tribute to Chua, who produced several of Chan's films, including City Hunter (1993), Crime Story (1993), Thunderbolt (1995), and Mr Nice Guy (1997).
Calling Chua his "half-master" on Facebook, the 71-year-old wrote about the "fresh and inspiring" stories the former shared with him, Sammo Hung, and Yuen Biao while filming in Europe.
"I was on the set when I heard the news my 'half-master' had passed away," he said.
"The first thing that surfaced in my mind were the times we filmed together overseas. Back then, he taught me many meaningful lessons, and it wasn't until later in life that I started to slowly understand.
"I recall him saying how our time on Earth is about learning how to live, how to die, and how to survive."
Chan added: And the most important thing in life depends on whether you're happy or not. I know that he lived a free-spirited and joyful life, which is most important."
Benny Se Teo, founder of restaurant chain Eighteen Chefs, wrote on Instagram: "A towering figure in the culinary world, Chua's wit, unapologetic palate and lifelong passion for food shaped the way many, including myself, see and taste the world. He wasn't just a gourmand, he was a storyteller whose insights and irreverent charm left a lasting legacy across Asia's food scene."
The Singaporean chef also described Chua as "a flavour that lingers".
Hong Kong director Patrick Kong posted on his Instagram Story that he had grown up reading Chua's books and learned "what a tasteful life is" from him.
Hong Kong-based French actress and patissier Amanda Strang wrote: "To my mentor, my master, thank you for inspiring my culinary journey. Because of you, I've learned so much about cuisine and the connections it fosters between people."
She added that losing Chua was "deeply painful" and that he will be "dearly missed".
Born in Singapore, Chua was the brother of Chua Liang, 91, the former principal of Nanyang Girls' High School, and the late TV drama producer Chua Swan, according to The Straits Times.
He was married to former film producer Cheung King-Man, who died in 2023.
Chua moved to Hong Kong in 1963, where he worked with film houses Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest.
He was also a food columnist for Oriental Daily and Next Media, and had over 150 books to his name.
In 1989, he co-hosted The Celebrity Talk Show with science fiction writer Ni Kuang and songwriter James Wong, interviewing personalities such as Maggie Cheung, Chow Yun-Fat, Leslie Cheung, and Joey Wong.
Chua was also the last living member of the Four Great Talents of Hong Kong, a title he shared with James Wong, Ni Kuang, and martial arts writer Louis Cha.

Alfred Cheung praises Ipoh hor fun: 'Best Cantonese dish I've had in decades'

Hong Kong actor Alfred Cheung visited Malaysia earlier in May for a holiday. Photos: Alfred Cheung/Facebook Hong Kong actor Alfred Cheung Kin Ting delighted Malaysians in May when he revealed that he was in Kuala Lumpur for a holiday with his niece and a group of friends. At the time, Cheung, 69, was full of praise for Malaysia, calling it a potential second home and highlighting the country's cleanliness as well as the warmth and humility of its people. Clearly taken by his experience, Cheung made a return trip – this time to Ipoh, Perak, where he sought medical treatment. Even with health matters on the agenda, the foodie in him couldn't resist indulging in local cuisine – including kaya toast, bean sprouts chicken rice and Ipoh white coffee, which he described as a 'richer Hong Kong-style afternoon tea'. However, it was the city's chicken hor fun that truly stole the filmmaker's heart. 'It's the best Cantonese dish I've had in decades. I used to think the best hor fun was from Guangzhou, but after trying the one in Ipoh, everything else (doesn't compare),' he said in a Facebook post. Cheung (2nd from right) enjoyed a meal with friends at a restaurant in Ipoh, Perak. Cheung, who has participated in the production of over 80 films, also took the opportunity to commend the people in Ipoh, Penang and KL for their efforts in preserving traditional Cantonese culture. 'Not only do they preserve traditional Cantonese culture but also blend it with Malay culinary traditions to create unique flavours,' he added. The Z Storm (2014) star ended his post with a reminder for his fans, writing: 'Remember: Ipoh hor fun is worth flying for.'

Elderly couple travels to Perak for non-existent cable car, duped by AI-generated video

AN elderly couple from Kuala Lumpur were left heartbroken after making a trip to Kuak Hulu, Perak, only to discover that a cable car attraction they saw online didn't actually exist. The video that led them there was entirely generated using artificial intelligence (AI). ALSO READ: Customer calls out restaurant for displaying AI generated images on food delivery app The incident came to light after a Threads user, @dyaaaaaaa._, shared her encounter with the couple, who had checked into a hotel in Kuak Hulu and inquired about the cable car. 'There was this elderly couple who came to check in at the hotel, and they asked me, 'Have you gone on the cable car ride at Kuak Hulu?' I thought they were joking, so I replied, 'Didn't have time to go.' 'Then they told me they had come all the way from KL just to ride that cable car. I was stunned,' she wrote. When she broke the news that no such attraction existed, the couple were in disbelief. 'I asked them, 'Are you serious?' and they said, 'Yes, really.' I felt so bad. I explained to them that the video they saw was AI-generated and fake. 'But the aunty said, 'No way, why would people lie like that? 'There was even a reporter in the video!' Despite her repeated explanations, the couple struggled to accept the truth. 'Then the uncle turned to his wife and asked, 'So what now?' I asked them, 'Didn't you ask your children before coming here?' And he said, 'We were embarrassed to ask.' 'The aunty then said, 'But you should have commented on the video to say it's not true.' 'She said they saw the video on Facebook, but I saw it on TikTok. I don't even have a Facebook account,' her post read. The situation worsened when the woman threatened to sue the 'journalist' featured in the AI-created footage, believing it was an actual news segment. 'She said she wants to sue the 'reporter' in the video. I told her, 'Aunty, the person in the video isn't real. It was all edited.' And she said, 'How could they do this to people?' The Threads user concluded her post with a reminder to be vigilant and to check in on older family members who might be vulnerable to online misinformation. 'So please, if your parents love to travel, make sure to ask them where they're going. Otherwise, something like this could happen — they came all the way from KL to Perak for nothing.' The AI-generated video, which is still circulating on platforms like TikTok and Facebook, uses convincing visuals and voiceovers mimicking news reports — making it difficult for some to distinguish fact from fiction.
